lmao they thought it was a leak when in reality the top of the reactor just peeled off

We thought we had a leak here in Sweden... tbh we are the ones who made Soviet Union confess and eventually disband

Yeah, i've read somewhere that it costed the USSR at least 200 billion dollars (hard currency) to do the clean-up until 1990. There was no way they could implement an expansion plan for the economy like Gorbachov had planned.
@UFCANT2 жыл бұрын
Yes it was. Gorbachov has said that quite often in interviews. I was in elementary school during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. It was the biggest thing on the news at the time. If they could only see this shit show today. The U.S. problems we had back then are laughable compared to this.

Chernobyl is very much known world wide now because of the disaster. Back then chances are big it was the first time anyone outside of the Societ Union had aer heard about it. So now everyone pronounces it the same way, back then reporters were probably like: "Tha fack is this town called?! How do you pronounce it?!
@custosnocte15282 жыл бұрын
Is it me, or does the news media ALWAYS pronounce certain locations different than the rest of the world in that smug Mainstream News type of condescending style. All my life Kyiv or Kiev, Ukraine has been pronounced Key-EV, like the chicken type. Now, these smart ass reporters pronounce the city as "KEEEV" I don't know whether to shit or go blind. I'm sure it's the Ukrainian people pronounce the name different than Russian folk. Either that, or the news people know EVERYTHING 🤣😭🤔 LMAO 🚫 *RUSSIA STOP NOW* 🚫

it was more recent back then and the event occurred there - so I would assume the name "appears on the map" for everyone and due to the fact that the phonetics of the word travel together with it, people tend to pronounce it correctly. after time passes, knowledge of the phonetics disappears and the written word is open to interpretation. i would argue that the most "natural way of pronouncing it" then establishes itself as a dominant way of saying it. hope its not too theoretical, but your comment made me think about it
