It's definitely the feeling of dread throughout the entirety of the series. Hereditary (horror movie) uses the same feeling of dread throughout the entire movie and has a similar effect, but I have to say that this Chernobyl HBO series is almost more disturbing simply because it's real.

My favourite Boris scene is coming off the chopper. You get the idea hes some pig headed brutal apparatchik who will threaten to throw a man off a helicopter over a petty grudge and to hide his lack of education. Then he starts talking to Brukhanov and Fomin and you find out hes very smart, he listens, he learns and he can be VERY scary!

The men he was speaking to would be the children of the generation of the Great Patriotic War (WW2), in which the USSR lost over 50 million citizens to choke the Nazi war machine with blood. If there's one thing the Soviets understood, it's sacrifice.

The soundtrack creators visited nuclear power plants and recorded the sounds and hums heard there and they play these buzzes and hums throughout the episodes. It's part of the reason you might feel uncomfortable viewing without fully realizing why.

Erik rewatch the shows version of it, you can see the rotors hit the crane and the hook fall. The reason it hit the crane was attributed to the smoke and possible radiation sickness

The creators included real recordings and materials and we, Russians can say that it is very carefully well-constructed picture of Soviet life, I mean cars, buildings, clothes, all these small gadgets. As Chernobyl was Rated 7 on the International Nuclear Event while TMI was a 5. Most that I am very sad is False Propaganda by the government that led to deaths of possible millions. I was recently watching a documentary where some guy went to the most radioactive places in the world like Hiroshima, Alamogordo, and of course, Chernobyl and they were in that same hospital and found those firefighter uniforms and they were STILL HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE after 30 some years. I had just watched the Chernobyl mini-series and that blew my mind. Those were some highly courageous but criminally uninformed comrades that died to cover up the Soviet blunders.

Short story from one of my friends, who lived through these events (I was born later): After word got out about the catastrophe in Hungary, where I live, government warned the population not to eat any vegetables, that could have been effected by radioactive dust. And so the price of such products fall dramatically, close to being free. Despite the warning, for weeks in some schools and kindergartens they served everything with lettuce, as it was cheap. Luckily we weren't too close to the events, still, it makes me stunned how irresponsible people can be

When the attack on Pearl Harbor happened and America entered World War ll, an American officer sat down with his wife and wrote her a code for the letters he would write to her so she knew where he was during his overseas combat. “Dearest” was Guadalcanal, “My Love” was Saipan, “My Darling” was Iwo Jima, etc. I immediately thought of that in their coded phone call in the beginning of the episode.

@@Tangalunga They were not shown dead in the show. We don't attend their funnerals. The show even admits the truth in some text at the end of episode 5. But the characters in the show did die as presented by the show. The show announced it as flat fact they would die shortly after the mission and never revisited the matter (except in end notes). The show made every effort to *deceive* the audience on that point. They even made up a scene of Legasov asking permission from Gorbechev himself to kill the three men. The intention was for the audience to believe the mission was not survivable and to believe that the men died after the mission. We know this was intentional because we know the writer knew the true story.

Guys I highly recommend the Chernobyl podcast from Hbo. It integrates perfectly the episodes, it explains them and it expands them because there's the creator of the series speaking. Great channel, can't wait to see your next reactions!

Great reactions. Your faces during the whole episode... kinda entertaining :D Of course the series took some creative liberties to tell the story, but lots of it is surprisingly acurate. Lots of the creative choices are explained in their excellent podcast for every episode. For example the role of Legasov and Shcherbina in handling the crisis is exaggerated to give the show a better focus and Emily Watson's character is one of the few fictional characters in the series (a stand in for a whole bunch of scientists who helped with the crisis). But what is really haunting, are all the details in the series taken directly from reality. For example the corridor in the hospital and the room where they dropped the firemen's clothing looks like in reality. You still can go down there and see the pile of clothing (and it is still one of the most radioactive places in the city). The 3 guys going into the water at the end are also real, including the fact, that their lights go dark. I would suggest not to google names from the show before you finished it, because reality could spoil future episodes.

At a rewatch I saw that the blades hit the steal cable of the crane ... which makes it not less frightening because the helicopter crashed because the pilot didn't saw the cable because they where completly surrounded by radioactiv smoke and dust ...

I love how the scene with Boris and the guys trying to play down the incident revealed that he had in fact been paying attention to what Legasov had told him. Boris was brusque and dismissive at times, but he always paid attention and remembered. He was also a career bureaucrat, and knew very well when people were giving him BS.

I think, what I love the most in these reactions, is everything between the two of them; that Sonny has the perfect reaction of all of us on the ground. He really connects with how we would feel, not knowing, not expecting, not imagining what this could mean. But still asking, what is this crap, what is actually happening, and shouldn't we be wearing gloves! He has such practicality. And that Kat has the technical and scientific background (I don't know from where, but it is clear). She has the pure, what the F moments, based completely in the realistic science of what is happening. She is the unfettered scientist on the scene. Natural radiation level is 10-30/1000000 roentgens per hour. There it was 15×1000 roentgens per hour, back in that days. You'll receive a 100% lethal dose in 144 seconds at this level of radiation (Just for info).

at 9:08, it's not the radiation that makes the chopper crash. the rotor blade hit the cable from the crane near the building. a crash like this happened about 6 months after the explosion.

20:15 I have no idea how much you guys want to know about soviet society but there is this book "The Revolution Betrayed: What is the USSR and Where is it Going?" that was written in 1936 by Leon Trotsky one of the leaders of the October Revolution who was exiled by Stalin. In it he describes the bureaucratic takeover and a sociological overview of the country as well as giving an accurate prediction of its' collapse. I won't lie it's a bit technical and has a communist bias but it is very good if you're interested in soviet history/general sociology.

i would argue that the 80s was on the quiet actually a more defining decade of the post ww2 era than the 1960's, the 60s gets all the attention for its flower power hippies and Vietnam, but naam was relatively localized as an american thing and flower power didn't really change all that much or last all that long, the events of the 80s totally changed the path we were heading down towards the future.

One of the little talked about prices of freedom is the freedom to be a selfish dick, and in a world where such people exhist the level of mutual trust in each others good faith to make a utopia is impossible, and you can only fight an impossibility so long befor you become so bitter you become the problem, And that's the cycle. Humanity evolved from a world of inequality, we are products of it, as such it is in our nature. Benjamin Disraeli wrote alot about this as a counter to Karl Marx, in which he argued mankind will always default to class structures, and he seems right, if you look at any attempt to change that they only replace what defines your position, wealth, genetics e.t.c is replaced with party rank and ideological purity, but a class heirachy remains. And any hierarchical structure as Benjamin points out is nauraly predetory from the top on the bottom. Benjamin agreed this was bad but inevitable so we need to find ways to bend the structure to work for the good of common man over constantly trying and failing to break it. The 60s Generation started with the idea of freedom, liberty and equality all hand in hand, but they lost to the inevitable default of humanity, but instead of trying to make it at least work for some good they gave up and joined in on the path of exploitation where there for fathers left off.

No guesses what happens if they're caught saying something besides the official story of the Chernobyl situation. 2. "Our 'friend' - the one in the 'country' " - The 'friend' of course is the nuclear reactor and the 'country' is the USSR. 3. "It's extremely hot" - "hot" is a general nuclear term referring to elevated levels of radiation. Obviously, the situation there is very "hot". 4. "But his nephews are flying down and they always bring cool weather" - referring to the helicopters coming down to try and put out the fire 5. "Oh which nephews?" - "what are they trying to use to cool the reactor?" 6. "Simka, who's 15 and little Boris who's 5" - Look at the first two letters of each name. Si and Bo. Silicon and Boron. The 'ages' of the 'nephews' refers to their number on the periodic table (which is why the camera briefly focuses on that). This refers to the borosilicate material being poured on the burning reactor. 7. "Though children can make you hotter when they're pouring all over you." - the stuff they're slathering on the reactor could potentially INCREASE the temperature/nuclear fission, at least temporarily. 8. "Maybe I should visit" - "maybe I should come and help these idiots before they make things worse."

Just a note about the helicopter... It didn’t crash because of the radiation, but because it hit a cable line on the nearby crane. You can see the rotor blades hit just before it goes down.

So, dynamics said that people will temporary move from Chernobyl because of some radiation risk in the air and word "Vnimanie" is really means "Attention". And yeah, as we all understand, "temporary" was nothing like this. Sad thing, all of this really happend. People did not bring anything much important with them, just clothes and documents. Nobody knew they will never return to their home. Sorry for my english.

All the firemens' gear is still in the basement of the hospital and the basement was sealed until only a couple of years ago and tourists can go in with a guide. The helicopter crash actually happened later when they were building the first "sarcophagus". Also they had no idea how radioactive it was and the helicopter did fly over and they could see the exposed burning core. I am presently researching for a video on the subject for my KZbin channel.

There’s footage and I believe on a VERY limited scale Chernobyl tours, perhaps. The footage is just eery. Perhaps it was just a camera crew, but the group I saw carried a dosimeter and timed their stay very carefully. They were only in the outskirts but they went into homes and a school, I believe. It was just as if the people vanished from a functioning community. Books left open, clothes still around, all the hallmarks of people covered in dust. Just crazy.

He was always smart and listening as shown by how he remembered uranium reaction as bullets and how he used Legasov's explanation of how a nuclear reactor works when he questioned Fomin. But Shcherbina's evolution really started when he was confronted with his own mortality in the hotel - "we'll be dead in 5 years", that really shook him up and Skarsgard's acting in showing that change was just superb from that point on.

@@DonFatherTrump The crash incident actually happened, though not the very first chopper through. Testing the (hard, carbon-rich, hinthint) steel they found out it had become brittle like gypsum. Forgot the exact explaination but I do know there's a tiny difference between the strongest steel and useless slag (juuuuuust enough bend to not snap) and the neutron beam made that balance go kaput. By the point this happens, human beings are cooked though.
