The reason that she is shown holding his shoes, during the burial, is because his feet had swollen so much, they couldn't be put on. They were all buried in uniforms, but their bodies had bloated so much, that cuts had to be made in the uniforms to get them on properly.

"At the levels some of them were exposed. Ionizing radiation tears the cellular structure apart. The skin blisters, turns red, then black. This is followed by a latency period. The immediate effects subside. The patient appears to be recovering. Healthy, even. But they aren’t. This usually only lasts for a day or two. Then the cellular damage begins to manifest. The bone marrow dies, the immune system fails, the organs and soft tissue begin to decompose. The arteries and veins spill open like sieves, to the point where you can’t even administer morphine for the pain, which is unimaginable. And then three days to three weeks, you are dead." This is why you would be begging for a bullet...

Something surprising I learned from reading about Chernobyl after I first saw the series: Remember the three men who volunteered to wade through the contaminated water to open the sluice gate valves? The effects of radiation can be a bit random, because of which particular cells in your body some particle happens to strike, and it turns out all three of them got very lucky and suffered no long term ill effects at all. One of them died of a heart attack 20 years later; the other two are still alive today.

Another reason they survived was because of their Specialized Synthetic Rubber Suits. It wasn't know at the time, but those rubber suits may be better than even Lead Shielding at stopping Radiation.

After the investigation was over, the reactor operators were blamed by the government and the graves of the reactor engineers were vandalized repeatedly except for Toptunov's because of the picture on his headstone. He was so young people felt he was innocent. His parents had a small bench installed next to his grave that they would visit as often as they could. Much later on the government vindicated the engineers and issues citations to their families.

15:45 that will be explained in Episode 5 in detail. 16:35 Yes, that is exactly what happens. The old cells die, but they do not get replaced with new cells anymore. Just like a body that just died.
@panzerwolf4942 жыл бұрын
Basically, yes. Radiation destroys the DNA making your cells unable to live and do their job. As a result they die. Without a way for your body to make new cells you basically rot apart as the old cells die off either from the radiation or just their normal life cycle and can't replace them with new ones. That latency period is just the remainder of what living cells you have trying to repair the body till they die.

My favorite character arc in this series is Boris. In Episode 1 he comes off as an uncaring bureaucrat/apparatchik. In Episode 2, he goes from a jerk to a just "hard man" doing his job. In Episode 3 you start to get a sense that he has a deep sense of duty but has some endearing traits. By Episode 5 you're crying for the man out of abject sympathy and realize what a good man he truly is/was.

Boris Shcherbina also oversaw the Soviet response to the 1988 earthquake in Armenia, which killed thousands of people. This is a full status of current RBMK reactors : 8 operational 1 Involved in accident (Chernobyl) 1 partially damaged 9 cancelled 9 decommissioned 3 small EGP-6 graphite moderated BWR operational (as of December 2021) EDIT : Of the 17 RBMKs built (Unit 5 was still under construction at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant), all three surviving reactors at the Chernobyl plant have now been closed. Unit 1 was closed in 1996, Unit 3 in 2000, (Unit 4 having been destroyed in the accident, and Unit 2 disabled after a hydrogen explosion in 1991). Chernobyl 5 and 6 were under construction at the time of the accident at Chernobyl, but further construction was stopped due to the high level of contamination at the site limiting its longer term future. Both reactors at Ignalina in Lithuania were also shut down. Russia is the only country to still operate reactors of this design: Leningrad (2 RBMK-1000), Smolensk (3 RBMK-1000) and Kursk (3 RBMK-1000), Kursk Unit 1 was shutdown via its BSM key at 00:24, December 19th, 2021, bringing an end to the last time the plant would run all four of its units side by side. There are currently no further RBMK Reactors under construction in Russia. The last RBMK Reactor in Russia is expected to shut down in 2034 at Smolensk-3.

@darkforestcinema2 жыл бұрын
In reality the firemen were no longer radioactive. That was mostly on their uniforms which are still in the hospital basement and still very lethal to touch. The husband wasn't a danger to her and the baby. In reality she was a danger to him since the radiation wiped away his immune system. Besides the little Hollywooding the situation, still a great episode.
@panzerwolf4942 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true. The firefighters inhaled a lot of radioactive particles that were still lodged in their lungs and ingested more just from the act of swallowing. Perhaps not *that* radioactive, but they still had those particles inside them emitting radiaition
@patrickdematosribeiro18452 жыл бұрын
The character is based on a real person and she had severe health issues and lost her child after visiting her husband. It cannot be proven directly she would have been healthy without visiting him, but the nurses did tell her not to touch him and she didn't listen. This part is actually pretty close to what really happened.
@maddogminecrafter88282 жыл бұрын
the significance of her holding his shoes is in reality the effects of the radiation was much worse then they were allowed to show,his feet swelled up and as they were taking off his shoes the flesh of his legs fell off like lose socks
@YekouriGaming2 жыл бұрын
A lot of the regular staff at the time did believe that a contaminated person was dangerous. Lyudmilla did explicetely say in the biography interview that a nurse told her that he was dangerous to her (she was around him on the hospital for the entire duration, just like if someone had been in a serious accident, and even came with flowers and home made cakes). Also @Triple Viktor the radioactive particles inside of them were hitting their own cells and never escaped outside of them again, which is why inhaling radioactive particles and or eating/drinking something contaminated is incredibly more dangerous than just being near something radioactive. The firefighters straight up inhaled some radioactive graphite (which can be some very fine particles as noted by pencils for example). We can even straight up eat uranium rocks and not emit any more radiation than after eating a banana (it contains a very small amount of radioactive particles), and we can on the other hand also stand a couple of meters away from an uranium rock and not have anything measureable penetrate into our bodies.
@panzerwolf4942 жыл бұрын
@@YekouriGaming Gamma does not stop at the cells. Gamma is what screws you up the most. Gama is not stopped by flesh. Also this is not uranium rock we're dealing with here. Uranium in nature is pretty much inert to us unless you like live on top of a huge pile for years. this is uranium fuel and graphite burning. Basically you're comparing drinking some water from a sink that has a few drops of Clorox added to sanitize to drinking straight from the jug. Uranium fuel is hugely concentrated. That rock plus another thousand pounds of it made a fuel pellet. There were about 22,000 of these burning and laying right along side the graphite.

It's easy to judge her with the benefit of hindsight, but consider that it was her beloved husband and nobody was telling her anything besides a vague warning to keep her distance. People don't think straight when they're worried out of their minds and are being kept in the dark. Unlike the scientists and doctors, Lyudmila is an average Soviet housewife who doesn't know much about radiation or the dangers it poses, and nobody cares to explain her anything or tell her what's wrong with her husband because of enforced secrecy. Can't really fault her for acting like a normal loving wife would, given the information available to her.

She was in town when the accident happened and for a day or so after. For all intents and purposes, that is where she got her primary radiation dose. I have to emphasize here that her husband was not radioactive at all and presented no danger to her or the baby. The series got this part wrong -- She presented a serious threat to him by being there, because he had no functioning immune system at the time. Filling graves with concrete was overkill, the bodies carried no significant radiation.
