The fireman’s wife didn’t want him to die alone which I can understand. she’s also never been told what it all means. She thinks he was burned. No one has taken the time to explain to her how serious it is. That being said, she was already exposed to the radiation that night so it’s not like she was free and clear on her own. I think she represents a vast majority of the regular folks caught up in that mess. They had no clue.

They actually toned down the radiation effects. And that actually isn't even the worst. Half of Akimov's face basically came off, exposing his skull in areas. He couldn't talk, only blink with one eye to answer questions. :(

If I remember correctly his wife was there to interpret his responses to questions, it must have been incredibly difficult for her to see her husband in that horrible state

9:09 This movie or script for this movies is inspired by book from Svetlana Alexievich: Chernobyl prayer. Everything with a little inaccuracy really happened and they added darker atmosphere by soundtrack based on real sounds from power plant from Ignalina (exact copy of Chernobyl) as well as excellent acting so that's why you have such feelings.

Yes the firemen were definitely not "contagious"! It's only radioactive particles mostly inside the body that you breathed in, or any trapped in your hair, ears eyelids fingernails etc anywhere that hasn't been thoroughly washed. These particulates continue emitting radiation so you really want as much "stuff" between you and the source as possible, either distance (air) or some form of shielding. Unfortunately the un-protected fireman breathed in alot of dust / smoke particles 😞

10:13 - No, in actuality, reports are that it was much, much worse. They had to “tone it down” for the show because it would be too much for anyone to see. You should read some of the actual horror stories of those who died. Body parts quite literally deteriorating as they moved, disintegrated; victims coughing up pieces of their internal organs. It’s so so sad 😔

They talk about this a bit in the podcast - really good one. An episode for each episode of the series. Well worth listening to!
