To some extent, the more that the "biorobots" could cover up, the more radiation exposure they could avoid. It is true that only a fully radiation resistant suit can protect you from the immediate rays of the radiation on those roofs, but the more they could prevent the radioactive dust and debris from touching their skin, or getting into their lungs or eyes or other openings, the better off they would be for overall radiation dosage. The true story of the biorobots is even more heroic than the show presents...many of the men volunteered to go out for multiple trips to save other people from having to go out there. And yeah, that big bombshell at the end is kind of technical, bit I hope you got the gist of it...that the Soviet Union knew that the emergency shutdown system on their RBMK reactors had a potentially fatal flaw in it, but concealed that fact from everyone but a tiny, select few...even the people who operated their RBMK reactors. 🖖💯✌

The Soviet citizens/soldiers who killed animals, cut down trees, and buried the soil underneath itself were called Liquidators. The animals had to be destroyed because they were presumed to have been contaminated and would have died slowly and then their bodies would have contaminated the other wild life, or at least that is what the science said at the time.
