@Vplayer-zy3lb

The point is they didnt. they thought they could just stop it, and that's what killed them the Button made to stop everything, worked as a detonator, AZ-5 Button was meant to stop all the reactions that we're happening in the core, but the Control Rods Had a fatal flaw they we're built od graphite which was meant to stop the reactivity, but the tips we're made od Boron do the first thing that touched the core was Boron which increased reactivity. So the reactor made to operate on 3300 megawats for 30 seconds was working on 33000 megawats. And then, boom

Thank you for clearing up the myths about the divers. As of 2019, two of the three were still alive, and they are indeed absolute heroes. Luckily, there were several liquidators there to decontaminate the divers immediately upon their egress from the flooded basement. The water wasn’t drained right after they opened the drainage gate however. Several hoses had to be dripped down through the gate to pump the water out, which from what I have read took several days. The first hoses inserted even broke shortly after and had to be quickly replaced. There are a lot of great books out there. One of my favorites is called “Ablaze,” written by Piers Paul Read. He also wrote an excellent book on the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, the famous crash that stranded a rugby team in the Andes for 72 days.

I went there in July 2021, was an amazing experience. Got up to the third floor of a couple buildings in Pripyat, pretty eerie. There are workers now living/working out of the town of Chernobyl though, they do 13 day shifts at a time and are then swapped out.
