There wasn't going to be an emergency procedure or checklist for losing all hydraulics. The plane shouldn't be flyable after that. It's the same as there is no emergency procedure if the wing falls off! Should've been game over. The fact that anyone at all survived is testament to those pilots. The job they done was remarkable. Also, pilots and crew mostly can't see the physical state of the aircraft while in flight. All they knew was there was a bang, a shudder, and alarms indicating an engine failure. You can see the top of the wings through the window and that is all, and that's only if it's a daytime flight. All they have to know the state of the aircraft are their instruments.

@lukes7479
@lukes7479 4 жыл бұрын
They are redundant, there are many redundancies in place. In the aviation industry we have a general rule and it is to practise at least dual redundancy, meaning if one system fails, there is at least one other system to back it up. In this case, there was triple redundancy on the hydraulic system, which is why it is such a rare occurrence that all three failures would occur at once.

@@aaron4ism He made that report before all the pertinent data was in. Engine failures damage other parts of the plane so rarely that it wasn't a thought. Any pilots whose career is to fly multi engine aircraft will generally have a handful of stories to tell about having had to shut down a misbehaving engine and either finishing the plotted flight, or altering course for a closer airport. So losing an engine usually isn't a gloom&doom scenario. And the pilot did the right thing regarding it as he did based on what he knew at the time.

I remember when this happened. It was amazing that the pilots got the plane on the ground; if not for the last-second wing-dip, it could have made it. What was more amazing was that so many people survived. In later simulations, other crews weren't able to even get their planes near an airfield; testimony to the cool headedness of this crew, their combined training, and a lot of luck.

Airline pilot here. Al Haynes and his crew are likely the most admired people among industry professionals. Not only did their skills and cool headedness avert far greater loss of life, but their handling of the media attention and notoriety are models of grace. They did not go on every talkshow, or book tours, or anything. They continued on with their professional careers and used their experiences to increase aviation safety.

The Stevie B Show I think you’re right. I know that up until the accident at Tenerife flight 981 out of France was the worst air disaster in history and that was a DC10. A poorly crafted hatch lock caused the cargo door to blow out once it reached 10,000 feet. What’s worse is they knew of the problem due to another accident before and still failed to fix it.

The senior flight attendant and two pilots filmed an episode of “I survived.” The flight attendant’s story really stuck with me as she recalled announcing the safety protocol instructions of the time, which were to place any lap children on the floor before bracing for landing. She later had to try to stop the mother of the young boy from running into the raging fire and the mother said “you told me to put him on the ground and now he’s gone.” It was horrifically heartbreaking and Jan says she believes she survived just so she could make a change in regulations for child safety on airlines.

I had a similar experience. I had a complete loss of all hydraulic brakes in my car, and I needed to travel 30 miles to get to the nearest mechanic to fix the brake line that had burst. So I used engine braking to slow down for stop signs / stop lights, and then when down to only 15 mph I would use the cable activated rear emergency brakes to come to a complete stop. It's possible to control a vehicle that has a total loss of hydraulics, but it is not much fun.
