Cherry. One of the most beautiful trees on planet earth. Such a joy to cut, to smell, to work with.
This log is part of many that I am looking to cut in the coming week, but this is one of the larger ones in my "to do" pile. I hope you enjoy the video and the process, one cut at a time, of cutting through this wonderful log.

I see some nice Cherry bowl blanks in your scrap. You should see about selling those scraps to woodturners.

I’m happy to cut whatever is selling. I do cut a fair amount of live edge. Depends on what my customer wants built. If they don’t want a live edge table I can just cut it off. It’s harder to put it back on if the customer wants live edge.

Don't know the dog's name but he appears to be looking for chipmunks. Keep up the good work and thanks for letting us watch you cut lumber. Very skilled indeed.

I agree with you. You do you. If others don't like it, well to bad.

I really don't understand why so many seem to cut live edge. The average person can't handle it in there shop and it take time to do so. Personally I wouldn't buy it. Now for the slab table thing that's the way to go.

The more you saw the more you realize you can only have so many slabs!

I agree, live edge is over rated. Cherry is my favorite wood as well, even compared to oak. It is hard to find nice cherry logs here in northern michigan though. Good video, keep them coming. You can use a spray bottle with rubbing alchohol to make the grain come out and then it evaporates quickly.

So I’m in louisville and feel super limited on my choices for lumber. I love cherry but would prefer 5/4 or 6/4. All 4/4 I’ve run across seems so unusable from the cupping and twisting

Live edge or Dimensional? Depends on the project at hand. I'm the type that finds a use for your slab wood as well. And YES, it does get to a point that it's best for firewood. I was raised with certain woods were for fire and others for creating. Many are for both. Like I said, it depends on the project. Everything has a use and purpose somewhere along the line. Even the bark. Myself, I would've cut some of those thinner for other projects. Sure, 2 inch thick tables are fine. But other projects are better suited with 1/2" to 1" boards. I once watched my Dad use an entire tree to build a fully furnished Dollhouse Village for my Sisters. A lot of the furniture was made from shavings, like from a Draw Knife or a handheld Planer. Imagine a full size lampshade on a wooden table lamp and it's all 100% wood except for the wiring and light fixture. The shade was covered with paper thin wood you could see through. A beautiful sight to behold, just sitting on the table. And 100 times more beautiful when it was turned on. Both works of art, the Dollhouses and the Lamp, contained both cuts of wood. Live edge or Dimensional?? It depends on how creative YOU are willing to be?

@ 10:58 a low-cut humbolt notch can help retain the integrity of the log, without cracking, because the trunk will tend to be laid on the ground more smoothly when falling, versus a higher standard notch that can cause parts of the upper trunk to crack.

Been a woodworker for over 55 years. Much prefer square edge wood, but will work with live edge if requested. Modern day epoxy is what has made live edge more popular. However trends will change as the effects to the environment of using chemicals becomes more and more of an issue.

As always…. Great vid! Love the EGG. Regarding the Live Edge vs Dimensional. I fall in the middle, love the organic live edge…. But I need dimensional too. I’m still a newbie with my LT35. Thanks for ur awesome content!!
