Here is my prospective , I started reselling because I love shopping is therapeutic for me. Got to the point where I had no more space for the stuff I was buying which I barely had enough time in a month or month to repeat my outfit. I don’t make much money reselling but is a way for me to recycle what I get. The point is I don’t mind spending a whole day shopping at any given store. A psychologist will charge more for the hour than what I can spend in a day at a thrift store or in retail 😂 you are doing a fantastic job tho!!!!🙌

Here’s the problem with the color tag theory for me. Here in my area, the tags are on the inside tag of each item. I have to look at almost each item to see if it’s new or not. The color tag isn’t just hanging off the side of the garment 😢
@krishuber72096 ай бұрын
I hit the new racks, then the do the hanger by hanger but I usually choose certain sections (jackets, sweaters, dresses, jeans, pants, scrubs & sleepwear) But I also only look at larger sizes in those items (except scrubs). So that cuts out a lot. And I usually skim the kids section on $1.99 day for jackets & snow pants. I found a Hanna Anderson down jacket for $1.99 a couple weeks ago! I believe - you do what works for you and what you enjoy! I am a part time seller so I am not trying to fill a quota.

Sometimes I find myself picking up stuff I shouldn’t just so that I have something to bring home. I will say I like going every hanger when I have time as a research opportunity - feeling quality of different brands / learning new tags and looking them up.

I can’t do the ‘new color method’ (I don’t think so at least)… The GW’s here in my area of Phoenix weave the new tag color items onto the racks. They tag most items onto the items label (which I like) because then they are not tagging directly through the knit of the garment and making a tag-hole in the item. The tag barbs are short and clear. The color is on the GW tag (not the barb) and also a date as to when the item was tagged (is on each tag). Anyways- I feel like I have to be meticulous and look hanger by hanger. This is not by choice. And it really sucks to be honest. When I lack the time or patience, I kinda scan for the lux textiles and any stand-out prints. And I walk though dresses/skirts and look for longer length, and then look at it. But- most of the time it’s the hanger by hanger method. And it’s exhausting, and other customers get in my way and I have to go around them which breaks my flow. Am I missing something, a better way to find stuff? If so- please share. When I type GW, that is my shorthand for Goodwill.

I would say, if you can't see the color tag, to focus on looking at the sides of the garment for quality and only look at those. It's another way of cherry picking. I have to do this sometimes. You could also try repositioning yourself to look on top of the rack to see the color and the tags. Just kind of use your hand to rake through and break up the Hangers.

I agree, your method makes sense, especially since you drive so far and want the time to pick the best items from several stores. I tend to go through the whole store, but when I have a short time, I'll peek at the new rack and look for sales colors. Thinking of my best finds at Goodwill, they do tend to be the new colors and are often on the new rack. Our Goodwill marks the oldest tags at 75% off at the beginning of the week so something that would sell for $20, I will often buy at that time. It is a great way to get more items.

All of the thrift stores I go to in the metro Atlanta area have new items/new color tags weaved in with older items. So I alternate b/t going through each hanger and just looking to see if something catches my eye (depends on how much time I have). I will say that if I cherry picked, I feel like I’d miss some good items. This year I’ve been taking my time, going through most items, and making sure to check comps - the quality of my inventory and my ASP has increased. I love all your videos!!! Idc where they start! 😊

Love this video concept. Nice work! I allot not more than one hour per store. If I haven’t been there in a while I focus on fine tooth comb looking at almost every hanger on my key sections. If I’ve been there recently then I go from rack to rack looking for new stuff. Sometimes it’s a combination. But when the hour is up, unless it’s going super good and I’m finding tons of stuff, it’s on to the next store. Just gotta have some system in place but for me I think a combo of fine grain and cherry picking works best using a time limit.

Looks similar to a store I go to. The racks are SO FULL I can barely get through them. Items are always falling off hangers. It's not easy to go through each hanger there. I always feel like a wimp because I get so tired and give up and end up going somewhere else. I'm with you, I think going to the new items is the best IF you go to the same stores all the time. If it is a smaller store, it can be worth it to check all the hangers but it does not take as much time as a large store. Great idea for a video.

I guess it depends on your thrift stores. Ours are priced up so high that only color tags (the oldest color) that are 1/2 off are profitable enough to pick up, and even then not always.
@helpfulcommenter6 ай бұрын
Tbh that’s probably a limiting belief that’s costing you money and you’re selling yourself short. I rely on other resellers having this attitude because it keeps them from looking more carefully, and leaving me tons of amazing things to pay up for for more profit. And I find so much stuff that I will pay up for that I can make significant profit because they’re high value in resale. But once you get it into your head that the thrift prices are “too high” you close off tons of opportunity. And I pick it up. Example: last week I found a Lululemon men’s down puffer coat. It was priced $24.99. Most resellers like you would say “that’s too high” - not for me. I will pay that price all day because I can sell it for close to $100. I know it has been passed over by other resellers who think it’s “too high” because it was last weeks color. And I live in one of the most competitive areas for thrifting with prices that make most people nauseous and angry

I think the results vary depending on the number of stores and how they color/rotate. I wouldn’t do it in a store I’ve been to recently. But I do both. We have 8 goodwills and if I’m only going to one store on a given day and do 2 stores a week, then by the time I get back to the first one, it’s all new inventory (we have 4 colors they rotate through). I have one different thrift store next to my gym that I do the color method though, because I go 2-3 times a week, so I’m checking the front of the sections (where they always put new colors) and being done in about 30 minutes.

As someone who lives closer to pretty decent thrifts (many many thrift stores in my local area within a 15-20 minute drive), I go hanger by hanger, and I can find some decent items even that are half off or even 75% off. Taking that you have to drive a decent amount to get to where you go sourcing, that makes total sense for your time to cherry-pick. Everyone is different. Also, that Thrift that you went to was HUGE. Totally get why you said that it would take you so long to go through it all. I have my select-sections that I go through, and at the moment, I rarely go over to the men's section because it is normally overly priced.

I think I need to start shopping by new tag color more often-- we have a ton of thrift stores in our area (Cinci metro area) but I cycle through them a bit haphazardly because when I go through every rack at a store I usually don't like to visit that store for 4-6 weeks so that the store is fully replenished. I'd much rather go to my favorites every week or two and look for the new tags.
@angelashort70866 ай бұрын
The stores in my area don't tag the clothes on places you can see unless you go hanger to hanger. They also don't have new racks. And yell at you if you touch the rolling racks they just brought on to the floor. So I do have to go hanger to hanger. But I recently learned a few stores in my area bring in pre-tagged items and regardless if the color is the color of fhe week, they go on the floor. I have found amazing items that jumped out at me, and were the sale color! I know they werent there the weeks before because they were just too obvious and sometimes bulky for me to have missed them.

I live close to many thrift stores. However, they don't put new racks out all day and I'm usually going to the thrifts after 4 pm when I get off work. The Goodwills here in Maryland don't don't all do the tabs, some do while others used colored tags so you have to pull each item to see the color anyway. We also have Savers and 2n d Avenue but both use colored tags and not tabs. 2nd Ave only puts new racks out until 4 pm and they dont leave them just sit there. They put everything away right away. One of our 2nd Ave stores doesn't let you look through new racks too, I usually skip that store because it's very pricey and I have to pay a toll. The goodwill here don't put much out everyday. SO, in the end going through the racks is almost my only option.

I can tell by 1 of 4 ways: 1. See what colors the employees are putting out or look at new racks 2. Find clusters of the same color (usually at the ends of the aisles) 3. Ask an employee (be sure to specify new color and not half off color) 4. I keep record of the color system (they usually go in order) so as long as I know what last week was, I should be able to figure out what the current week is.

I know the "dread" you're talking about when you're going through a store too slowly. Time's burning away, other resellers are hitting the other stores and the dollars per minute rate feels like it's plummeting. Full store takes me 1hr maybe 1.5 tops for a massive store and that's looking at every label on every hanger. Full menswear, womens outerwear and sweaters I'd be in and out in 30-40mins tops. Cherry picking - new tags, new carts takes 10-15 mins at most. I shoot for about 2-3 stores per hour including travel. A full day of thrifting could be anywhere from 15-19 stores... And even then sometimes I feel like I'm slow. It's a grind!

The days I go through all the hangers is all day, but I do that on days they get trucks in so they are pushing out new racks nonstop all day as well those days. And on the starting in the car, I don't care where videos start, but it really bothers me when people record videos while driving. I worked trauma in the hospital for a decade and I can tell you that you are way more distracted than you realize recording and driving and talking. I won't even watch those people videos so they don't get views at least from me.

I mean, I guess it depends because everybody’s shopping is going to be different. Obviously if you’re driving an hour and a half just to get to the stores you need to make the best of the situation and your method is going to work best for you. For me, there’s only one Goodwill That I can get too easily… So I’m not going to skip things and I have found plenty of amazing pieces that made it all the way to the 50% off sale. I’m talking designer items. So if I was just doing the cherry pick method, I never would’ve found those. That being said, I know that if I had more stores to choose from, then I might do more of a cherry pick method because I would have more options for my Thrifting. And then I have another small local thrift that doesn’t do new tags of any kind. They will do hangers that sometimes have colors on them and those colors relate to sales but because things fall and people put things on hangers that don’t correspond to the color they originally on it doesn’t mean anything. So that’s a store where you really do have to go through everything. But luckily it’s not a very big store. so I guess it just depends on what you have available and whatever works for you Also, I don’t necessarily care about starting the car. I think people get annoyed by it because it’s distracting. I know that for me, I can’t actually watch when people are in the car because my eyes start trying to focus on the things outside of the car. I can barely watch thrift with me videos because of that because my eyes are trying to look at everything that’s happening around , the person. So I just treat a lot of these videos podcast unless they’re like sitting at their home or wherever showing off items.

The thrifts in my area also don't do the colors. And they don't have new racks. No option except to look at everything. I have seen the same pair of Mother jeans with horrible puckering for 2 months now. This is why I prefer the bins.

New to thrifting - do all stores do color tags based on newness? This is good info. Thank you!
@cayleyelaine6 ай бұрын
Not every store does, but a lot of stores change the color of the tags every week with the new items they are putting out.

Wow you spent 3 hours in one store. I thought you purchased whole sale I had no idea you went to source. I don’t understand what you mean by your method (cherry picking in many stores) is that what you meant ? Lol I’ve got posher va now it’s helped a little thinking of cross listing.
@cayleyelaine6 ай бұрын
I do get wholesale but we also source. Cherry picking just means we aren't going through every item. We are scanning with our eyes and only looking into certain pieces.
@jojomojo0126 ай бұрын
You’re lucky your thrift stores put the color tags on the outside of the item. My thrift stores do that for jeans and pants but for tops and dresses they put the color tag on the tag of the item so you’re basically forced to go through hanger by hanger to even see which items in the aisles have the new color 😓. In that situation would you go to certain sections of the store only?
@maryclarke98946 ай бұрын
This is true in my area, too. If I don't have time to go through everything, I will at least try to do the larger sizes and take a quick look at the other. A lot of people do shoes and handbags first, but I still have a lot to learn on those, so it slows me down.

GW prices are too high now in my area. I will occasionally cherry pick, but have found much better sourcing options. Curious about the Burberry assessment. I couldn’t tell what you saw on the tag that confirmed it was fake, but there is authentic stuff made globally, including China and Japan. Please share! Thank you! PS If someone is sourcing and filming, why wouldn’t the video start in the car lol?! 🤣

I automatically assumed it was fake because of the cheap tag on the inside. It could've been real...but probably not.

what do you suggest for thrift stores that don't bring out new racks like Goodwill?
@cayleyelaine6 ай бұрын
My Goodwills do bring out new racks. If they don't they should still follow a color system. I figure out the new color by 1 of 4 ways: 1.

I could feel how stressed you were getting using this method and when you posted the data at the end, it really doesn't make sense for you. I also get stressed when I'm part way through the store and starting to feel pretty tired and that it's such a huge time suck. I really haven't found a good method of easily identifying the new items, though. Sometimes there are new racks out, but at other times, they've all been put away or are in the process (I still look at those). I find it hard to pick the new color out of a rack of clothes and find I have to go through most of the clothes just to see what color they are. Another negative for me is that there aren't that many areas (if any) around me that have several good stores in close proximity to each other, so I may as well spend more time at the stores I go to. I am especially apt to do that at the Salvation Army, as they have two colors 50% off and one 99 cents. There, I look for the new items and the discounted ones, because often they are worth picking up when discounted that much. I am still looking for a better way overall, though, and testing out different stores and areas. This was a very interesting video. I am alway happy to see you on a video and could care less whether you're in the car or not!

Unfortunately in my thrift stores they color Tag the label inside item so you almost have to look at every item to see the color.

My GW has 50% off the old color, so that is generally what I source for. What are the thoughts on that?
@cayleyelaine6 ай бұрын
If that works for you I think that's great! I rarely look for the sale colors. For my business model, I'd much rather pay a few bucks extra per item but have a much higher asp. The items on sale are the ones that have been on the floor and picked over by other resellers for weeks. Chances are, there's not many high asp items left.

How do you do the Cherry Picking method if the thrift stores don't put the colored hang-tag thingies sticking out on the outside of the garment. None of my thrift stores here (Goodwill, or otherwise) do their tags like that. So you have to flip through them to even see what color each item is. Do you have a good cherry picking method for the stores that do this?
@cayleyelaine6 ай бұрын
Some of my stores put it on the tag. I basically try to hover over top of the rack so I can look down and find the new color without touching everything. Sometimes I use my hand to kind of rake through the items to be able to see the tag color but not have to go hanger by hanger. Typically the items get put at the ends of the aisles or where the sizes change. Hope this helps!

I’m at the 6:44 minute mark. Before I finish the video I’m going to say it depends on how often you go if you should be going through every item. Why keep viewing the same items over and over when you should just be looking at newer that comes in? That’s my take.

I’m trying to dk this ..the problem is the no sale prices on the new items are so high that it’s sooo hard tk make decent flip and then I find nothing 🤷🏼♀️
@cayleyelaine4 ай бұрын
I would recommend one of two things: 1. If you can, focus on getting through thrift stores faster and getting to more in the same day. Your likelihood of finding bolos at decent prices is more likely the more places you get to. If you're doing this method, I'd also recommend doing some comp research for bolo's in certain categories and filtering your minimum price to $35. That way you only focus on memorizing the higher asp items. 2. If #1 isn't possible, then it may be a better option to shop at a place like the bins where you can take more risks and pick up things based on factor stacking.

What about only buying the color of the week unless it's a unique item?

They are the newer items and have been far less picked through so you are more likely to find great items by only shopping the new colors.

Hi Cayley. Please tell me how you can promote your products on eBay? As a new beginning seller, I list my products (clothing), but there aren't even any views. As I understand it, different promotions of a product are allowed only when there is already some kind of rating. How can I start promoting my product when I’ve just started so that sales can start? If you don't mind, please answer. Thank you.
@cayleyelaine6 ай бұрын
Hello! First, I don't recommend promoting as a beginner. Promotions should be reserved for items that don't have a very high str or have a lot of competition. As a beginner, I'd try to work on your sourcing to only pickup items that sell quickly. If you still want to promote, I do so by going to the active listings page on ebay, selecting the items I want to promote, and then choosing actions >promote. If you don't have a store, I believe you can also do this in the listing draft before setting it active.

It takes practice for sure! I'd recommend doing some comp research before you go so you have an idea of things to look for. But, everyone is capable of only looking at the new color items and doing research from there.

As far as starting in the car...as long as you're not driving and the car isn't running. I don't care. Driving and recording (unless self-driving vehicle) is driving distracted when looking at a camera. Vehicle running (AC/heater), the humming noise is overwhelming to me on a subwoofer (home entertainment system).

Sensory overload…it’s probably histamine intolerance…….moldy,dusty. You need to get out of there. I m like that in the thrift stores. I just learned that about my body. High histamine food makes it worse. But I changed to a meat base diet and it’s correcting the leaky brain and gut I have that makes histamine intolerance worse. Now I’m not so anxious or have that sensory overload.. I’m sure wasting time with less productive activities can be stressful too.
