Spurs had great form going into this one - they were unbeaten in their last 16 fixtures. They had also reached the final without conceding a single goal (the first time that had happened). Could they now stop Liverpool retaining the trophy that they had won 12 months earlier? Ultimately not, as Ronnie Whelan, in his first game at Wembley, was to have an afternoon to remember. Brian Moore commentates.

In those early days “ The Mersey boy”, I thought he got loads of deserved credit as he was such an exciting footballer and did extraordinary things. He and Ian Rush absolutely revitalised the team in the 1981/82 season. I think it was in later years that he was unsung when he did the job of sweeping up around of the defence as Souness had done in a more muscular way before. The players always said that he did things in training that none of them could match. In the early days we used to see them on a Saturday as in the League cup finals of 82 and 83 and the Championship clincher against Tottenham in 82 amongst othersbut after that he did an equally brilliant but less spectacular job. He was still capable of laying on the winner as he did for Ian Rush in the 1986 FA Cup final.

@Ryan M : You should include the 70s too. From '75-'85 there were 11 finals in the European cup and English teams contested all but two.Of the other 9 English teams won 7 with Liverpool and Leeds both losing one each. The seven winners were Liverpool(4),Nottm Forest(2) and Aston Villa(1).The only real underperformers were the England team itself, and perhaps that is why many forget how good the players were.Although we shouldn't forget, according to Man Utd fans, football only started in 1992,it didn't exist before then.

Have been watching lots of old clips lately and truly believe that today's Liverpool players could learn a lot by watching the games from the great era of the 70's and 80's. The calm- and smartness in the attack play and finishing. However, quiestion is if not the defense play and perhaps also players have developed some since then.

Two great teams here. The Liverpool equaliser was the first goal Spurs conceded in that year's competition. The defeat was their first ever at Wembley. There was talk of the Quadruple that year, after success in the previous season's FA Cup, and Burkinshaw's over ambitious desire to "make people stop talking about the double team." The squad was too small for that, of course. I always felt that this team was capable of beating anybody, certainly in the country, and perhaps even in Europe, but the increasing volume of games, injury and sheer tiredness got to them. They retained the Cup, came fourth I think in the league, and lost heavily in the fog in Munich in the Cup Winners' Cup semis. But undoubtedly a great team, possibly the best Spurs set up I remember.

My memory! I've just looked at the 81-82 Cup Winner's cup and it was Barcelona who narrowly put us out. Yet I distinctly remember us losing 4-1 to Bayern Munich in a semi - final in atrocious fog. Well, there you go.

Those were the days when The Football League Cup Final was played on a Saturday at 3pm (no live t.v. just recorded highlights on the Sunday afternoon). That Liverpool F.C. all red kit lasted for 18 years - November 1964 to May 1976 the O neck and August 1976 to May 1982 the V neck, from then on they varied the design of the kit.

@@zzzaaa0990 OK I'll prove it then. Just heads up im a massive admirer of Liverpool as my old man's a fan (especially the 1980s squad). With football it got faster and faster as time has gone on. Here's a game with Liverpool vs Everton: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn6sdmCcfsZ8Z80 With the first division it had in my opinion the fastest play of football at that time. The speed of knocking the ball and running around imo was that decade's fastest. Now look at serie A a couple of years down the line in a game between Napoli vs AC Milan 88-89. From here we can see that the speed of play is slightly slower but more technical/finesse. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4HFhn6Zpt1_rtk From here you can see the players trotting around as you said. Still happened in the same era. Now here's a match in the 90s with Inter Milan and AC Milan. Serie A had become that decade's fastest league. The speed of play is slightly more comparable to today's. You can see by comparing this and the clip before on how in a short time span the game had gotten faster. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4fNo3Rpotqka9U Now here's a game between them again a couple of years later, look how the speed has improved in a few years. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJuaZ6umfZaGjpY When the 2000s hit, the speed returned to England and has stayed here as the fastest league. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWXUhWRqlM-daLM From this clip we can compare it to the 80s, the speed is incomparable. Now compare to the late 2000s in a game between Utd and Liverpool kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4CsamSVjZuZqc0 Faster in a short timespan The point of these clips where to show you an comparably evolution of speed in football. Now fast forward to a game between Utd and city. The speed between now and the 1980s immense. Through lighter equipment and faster, fitter players, football's speed has become ridiculous compared to the 1980s kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2rbcpyGqLamr68 Oh yeah and players don't run around like headless chickens now a days, runs are controlled and physicality is good only if it serves a purpose. This style of controlled physicality and speed was preached by Cruyff and total football, it has made its way into modern day football as tactics and teamwork are alot different and complex

@@qasion Not quite. Though there are certainly more black players today. However, Garth Crooks is British. And British players are in the minority these days. This country produces very little in the way of home-grown footballing talent compared to then.

Love how Souness blew and wiped his nose with the same hand then tried to get rid of the evidence by wiping it on his shirt and then went on to shake the hands of the VIP using that same hand. Arh. The good old days, when men where men by bathing in the same bath together.
