The question seemed like a veiled slight at Sergey by making Nepo admit he had to get rid of him. Maybe Nepo didn't want to throw him under the bus, so he just inquired the reasoning behind the question and the interviewer had none. If she asked that in good faith, she could just explain her logic rather than give up on it.
