I could be mistaken but (1) did she forfeit the win she earned by his illegal move by failing to claim the illegality in time BEFOE making her next move, , or (2) is she still allowed to claim a few seconds after they both made more moves and her clock ran out that she won by illegal move at that time so that her clock running out half a second later is irrelevant? I left a comment in another of her videos about castling sooner, rather than later. And here (3:30), that strategy is brought up again. I am no expert, but was taught that castling was better later, to disrupt someone’s strategy and make them have to rethink. And it looks like she used it that way… causing him to wonder why she didn’t castle as soon as possible, like her mother told her to do. And her reply was… that her mom also told her to play good chess. Why does everyone think that castling should be done as soon as possible, instead of as a later disruption of strategy? Or just as a move of safety, but done later… after things develop a bit?

If you are safe in the centre, delaying casting can be great, because you wait to see where your opponent commits their pieces first. If you trick them into launching a Kingside attack, for example, then castle long it can be a great set back to them. Of course, nobody likes getting trapped in the centre....
@comp.lex4
@comp.lex4 Жыл бұрын
Way too easy and harmful to get trapped in the center with a bishop seeing your back rank or taking a knight check. The right to castle has a "use it or lose it" quality in many ways. But overall I think Anna is right- principles and general rules always play second fiddle to making the right move for the position and "playing good chess"!

I watched this video all the way through to the end of the game, and I have a chess-playing question. What would happen if one or more of your pawns reached the opponent's back line? Is a pawn unable to make any moves from there? If so (unless the rules do not change for pawns once they reach the opponent's back line), its only purpose would be to get in the way.

@@amieres Wow! Thanks a Lot! I didn't know that, but I thought it might be a good idea if it could be like a queen. I guess it could also be like a horse. My next question is, if you choose for it to be like a particular piece, can you change from move to move? For example, can it be a queen for one move and a horse for the next move, and keep changing, or essentially from the very beginning, can it make any type of move that any other piece could make?

@@indoorandoutdoorendurance3889 once it's promoted it has to live the remainder of it's life as that piece. 99% of the time the best move is to promote to queen, but there are rare cases when such a promotion would end in stalemate and even rarer cases when a knight is a better option because of its different pattern of movement.
