A good way to learn is to buy a chess program like Chess Pro - Multiplayer & AI from the Unity asset store. I got it on sale for 25 bucks and it supports any Universal Chess Interface AI, like Mittens, Stockfish etc... so you can play against them at any ELO, or pit them against each other. You learn a lot watching the AI.
