Greetings Chess Players! My name is Chris Torres and this is my Daily Chess Musing for Friday, February 16th, 2024.
A good coach is said to put players in positions where they can succeed. As the CalChess Scholastic Coordinator, I use Daily Chess Musings as a platform to coach all of our youth chess players. Through DCM Invitational Events, I place hard working young chess players in positions where they can play, grow, and succeed.
On February 11th, 2024, I ran a free DCM scholastic chess invitational tournament at the Mechanics’ Institute in San Francisco. We chose The Mechanics’ Institute because it holds a significant place in the annals of California chess history. Established in 1854, it is the oldest continuously operating chess club in the United States. The institute's chess room has witnessed the rise of many notable chess players and I am confident many of the players in the Daily Chess Musings Winter Invitational will join the ranks of chess masters who have competed in this storied location.
Sixteen talented California chess players accepted the invitation to participate in this prestigious event. All their games were recorded so that losses turn into lessons and winning notation sheets are proof of the well executed strategies. Throughout the day plenty of friendships were created and this was especially evident while the players enjoyed the catered food during the lunch break. Trophies and medals were handed out as each Quad finished but I am sure that most of the chess parents in attendance will agree that the best reward are the lifelong memories these kids will carry with them going forward.
I am proud to offer these types of events at no cost to deserving children. If you believe your family would be interested in attending our next invitational chess tournament, please introduce yourself to me at any of the major scholastic chess competitions in Northern California. Additionally, be sure to follow the Daily Chess Musings blog, subscribe to our Daily Chess Musings KZbin channel, and join our Daily Chess Musings club on chess(dot)com. Together we can make California the gold standard for scholastic chess.
