I think it's unrelated since you're using your eyes during your search in the dark. True you might use your brain or more specifically memory to where you put it in the first place but more than likely you would use your eyes

i am sure even Magnus struggles with stuff like that...a game of chess does not actual have a physical existence... the board and the pieces are only there to give a visual and a physical representation of the actual game or the position...that is why this is possible...because the mind is so powerful that through practice we can create a virtual representation of the same

There's a video on youtube where Wesley So is given three chess puzzles and he solves them all successfully without a chessboard. The only information he gets is the position of the pieces told to him verbally. This tells me that he can mentally build a picture of a chessboard in his brain and go from that. Also, there are people who can calculate complex math formulas using an abacus that they visualize in their head. There are videos of that as well on youtube. Quite impressive!

Playing a single game blindfolded is not difficult for players rated over 2000. Especially at grandmaster level (and even more so at super grandmaster level), playing a single game blindfolded is not even a handicap.

It's really joy to watch Magnus play! We couldn't see in history of chess the world champions to play any super risky opening games. If someone played kings gambit that would be published as some shocking news. So we saw KG played only a few times by champions, heh.. And now look what our champion play blindfolded! Chess is growing in popularity in large part thanks to Magnus. I actually think Hearthstone's popularity also has a hand in it. People realize that chess is a better game, and it's free, but they attract similar types of people. It's a good time for chess.

Jan is either the ultimate ball buster or he is actually uncertain about the limits of Cerlsen's genius when he asks at the 1:35 mark "how tough is blindfold game for you can you talk during it or do you have to focus". A 5 minute blindfold game. Man I got a good laugh at that one!

I'm not sure who you are talking about, but I'm pretty sure he just played a system to actually make the players play against eachother. Unless all opponents play the same color / there are opening rules ofc.
