It was a battle of generations as Nigel Short, the former World Championship challenger, celebrating his 58th birthday took on 17-year-old talent Raunak Sadhwani in the Maharashtra Challenge 2023 match. The first classical game ended with a queen sacrifice and a backrank mate. How did it happen? Check out in this video.

Nigel is showing a lot of class. The checkmate means nothing to Nigel (he loses either way), but that finish means everything to the young and talented player.

That humble gesture by Nigel to allow back rank consciously knowing his material disadvantage and going into a smooth checkmate stole my heart away. ❤😊

Hi Sagar, I am long time follower of your channel. Can I suggest that you stop putting these captions in the video thumbnail? They can be quite off-putting sometimes. Audience for your channel is of enthusiasts of the game and you don't really need to grab eyeballs with these captions. Thanks for all the work you and your team are putting in. 🙏

why do you feel its off-putting ? Don't know about rest but this video thumbnail seems to be just stating facts and context of the game.

I agree, these new thumbnails look cheap especially with those humongous arrows pointing towards the players. Just a simple picture of the game would have been better

After Nd6 and the loss of the e-pawn there is no fight left for White, other than the last burst of energy seen in the game, which was swiftly refuted.

Buddy, he is prodigy in Chess.. When he was 10, he defeated then world# 2 Viktor Korchnoi.. He is the first English player to play a World Chess Championship match, when he qualified to play Garry Kasparov in the PCA world championship in London, where Kasparov won 12½ to 7½.. We could say he is a legend but not popular one..

Svidler and short playing throwaway moves and letting the other guy win in this tournament why? your guess is as good as mine. I refuse to believe that these two legends are so weak although i maybe wrong still.

Jeyakumar, i refuse to believe that these two classy gentleman of the game are throwing for money, and Ayush, I do not think them making these moves makes them weak. Svidler missed and fell to c5, a brilliant positional pawn sac by Vidit, and Short was not as well prepared for this aggressive h4 line in the Taimanov and made an opening mistake which slowly got worse for him. That, and the facts that both Svidler and Short are not playing tournaments as actively as Vidit and Raunak, and had to make intercontinental travel to get to the venue, both do play a role. Nonetheless, it's just the beginning, don't be too quick to judge, both the matches can go either way still.

Also, Svidler is world #43, Vidit is world #29. Nigel is #216 and dropping, Raunak is #126 and rapidly rising. So the Indians are infact already the favourites on paper.
