Well yeah, once he basically gives it away. The same idea was MUCH better, presented in the Russian Chess Primer, where the author gave no hint of the solution, and you had to think "what the hell am I missing re an obvious mate in one?" for awhile, to see what was required to make the puzzle possibly solvable.

1:17 hypothetically speaking, if there is no rook on b7, the pawn still can't capture the pawn on e6 because the black king is in check by the bishop on b2 if the pawn were to move (again, assuming there was no rook on b7), it could only go f6, not fxe6.

It would be nice if the first one was so constructed so that we could logically prove (by retroanalysis) that the previous move was the double pawn push. In the second position, the blind spot (at least for me) was that the Queen was pinned, so cannot move! In the fourth position, BOTH rooks could intercept, destroying the checkmate if the knight went to the wrong square. In te fifth position, Qa2+ doesn't work, since the rook can intercept it. However, if that answer is found, the correct solution would be trivial.

I literally found every checkmate pretty fast, first one was easy mainly because I already knew the answer (I solved this puzzle a long time ago). I'm not lying by the way. Finding M1 is pretty easy if enemy's king can't move, or if... SPOILER ALERT ...its moves indicate what piece has to give a check :)

Qb7 for second puzzle. I'm not entirely sure, but Black's Queen is on b1 and it cannot stop d7. White's Bishop on h1 gives the White Queen protection so Black's King cannot take. The Black Bishop on g8 is pinned. I think it's checkmate and Black loses.
