you can let pawns be captured, that way you're not moving them so the square doesn't get scorched. This lets you develop better in the start, maybe enough to get your pieces to the opponents side and mount an attack.
Ha! Orbulus Cranium here... 11. ... Qh4+ isn't actually mate, because I wouldn't be able capture the king until I'd underpromoted a third bishop, and White's king wouldn't be obligated to move out of check, so Simp had plenty of legal moves. I think the trick with scorched earth is that spaces aren't lost if your piece is captured. Pawns are the worst 'piece' to, because they take every space as they move forward - you want to quickly get your own pawns killed, so that they get out of the way and stop devouring spaces.
@Khunkurisu2 күн бұрын
As mentioned by a couple others that first drawback specified squares you’ve moved from, which shouldn’t include squares emptied by your pieces (or pawns) being captured. So the way to win is to get them to capture towards the center to keep the king’s mobility options available. (Still exceptionally difficult)

Scorched Earth is such a bullshit drawback that I think it should be either nerfed (e.g. can use any square no more than 3 times) or removed from this variant completely. At the start of the game, you immediately lose 25% of the board, and the opponent's side is unreachable at first, so that leaves you with only 50% of the board to move and develop, and that half keeps shrinking with every turn.

With scorched earth, you need maximum value from each move. Pawns do not give maximum value, they give maximum board coverage.
@jackychen77692 күн бұрын
My problem w Scorched Earth is that you can take advantage of it by moving your king to any space your opponent can't move on. Ofc, this isn't as big an issue if you don't reveal, but that still presents the issue of being unable to capture your opponent's king even if you mate it. Scorched Earth should at least exclude the space the enemy king is on, and it's still a hard one.
@NightSkyJeff2 күн бұрын
The king *can* move in this variant, he just has to move onto a square that another one of your pieces or pawns never moved from. So if you let one of three king-adjacent pawns get captured, the king can potentially re-capture and move.

I've learnt that inputting any elo greater than 2000 in the welcome screen will set your Drawback Chess elo to 2000 in your profile. This means the idea of a 2000+ speedrun may not be that meaningful. Would be better if Simp does an Drawback Chess elo climb like he has been doing with Duck Chess. Just an idea though.

I suppose Triple Play is not that high on the scale because you can play almost the entire game as if you had no drawback, which _probably_ puts you at a great advantage over your opponents. Just postpone capturing the King until the endgame where you can turn pawns into Bishops as needed - if you didn't win due to your opponent's drawback until then.

Game theory is the study of mathematical models of strategic interactions. It has applications in many fields of social science, and is used extensively in economics, logic, systems science and computer science. Initially, game theory addressed two-person zero-sum games, in which a participant's gains or losses are exactly balanced by the losses and gains of the other participant. In the 1950s, it was extended to the study of non zero-sum games, and was eventually applied to a wide range of behavioral relations. It is now an umbrella term for the science of rational decision making in humans, animals, and computers. Modern game theory began with the idea of mixed-strategy equilibria in two-person zero-sum games and its proof by John von Neumann. Von Neumann's original proof used the Brouwer fixed-point theorem on continuous mappings into compact convex sets, which became a standard method in game theory and mathematical economics. His paper was followed by Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (1944), co-written with Oskar Morgenstern, which considered cooperative games of several players. The second edition provided an axiomatic theory of expected utility, which allowed mathematical statisticians and economists to treat decision-making under uncertainty.

If you have the Scorched Earth drawback an no legal move, since all possible squares are blocked by the drawback, is it a stalemate? might be a way to squeeze out a draw... or do you just lose? Why move the queen back in the second game? Qxc6 is just a free knight since his pawns cannot move to light squares and therefore cannot capture your queen. I see zero reason for such a low testosterone move. In fact Qe6+ is arguably worse, even if it were allowed since he'll just block with bishop and that's that (and it's still a perfectly sensible followup after the free knight).

IMO this series has become less interesting as your ELO has gone up and your drawbacks have gotten more severe. I know you're not a coward and all, but I think it would be more interesting if you didn't reveal, or only counter-revealed. More specifically, what I would suggest is to pick a target number of games in a row to win, pick a rating, and then try to win however many games you picked in a row at that rating. If you succeed, bump the rating up and try again. This will be much more doable without always revealing, and won't involve raising the numbers to meaningless levels (as others have noted, the site doesn't actually support arbitrarily high ELO anyway).
