A theme in a lot of the games we have reviewed so far is to avoid pushing king pawns due to the weaknesses it creates. However, quite often Stockfish indicates a move like h6 or h3 is the best move to avoid knights/bishops coming to g5 or g4. How can we know when the benefit of pushing h6/h3 is worth the cost of the weakness it creates?

I hear that pushing the h pawn generally doesn't create as much weaknesses as pushing g or f pawns Edit : (because they opens diagonals, pushing the h pawn doesn't)

"to avoid knights/bishops coming to g5 or g4" Stockfish tends to produce concrete lines, not so much consider her(him?)self with that kind of prophylaxis. I would very much assume most of the time stockfish recommends that type of move it is to follow up with pawn g5/4 herself ... given the opportunity

I have watched several of your videos and may buy the Chernev book. I had Reuben Fine's book, in paperback, about fifty years ago, but I think I learned more from watching your videos that related to it than from owning the actual volume. Some of us only really start to learn when all the other possibilities have been exhausted!

I thought of rook takes bishop first, but then couldn't find a good follow up, so abandoned it. Interesting to learn that you don't necessarily need a follow up in this situation because of the dark square weakness it creates long-term.

By far my favorite series right now! I would recommend using the link provided in the description to purchase the book. I went and found it on my own and my edition has super weird notations like Kt to KB3 instead of calling it c3. If you get the linked book then you should have the correct edition with the modern notations. 💪🏼🤓

16:14 black can still technically prevent the checkmate by … Qxd4 Qxd4 f6. It’s still a lost game though.

Great series and love the explanations. One question. At 17:26 you say that Black cannot stop the checkmate after Qf4, but surely Black has ... Qxf6. White can play Nxf6+ or Qxf6 but the checkmate is stopped. True, Black has lost his Queen so is Rook and Pawn against a Queen. Therefore, longer term, the game will most probably be lost but still...

The main reason i see that weakening king side was a bad move was because most of those pawns are on light squares and white only has a dark square bishop. This means it's inviting the bishop to take away safe squares from the king if they castle that side, which is likely given their darksquare bishop and queen have yet to develop.

Hey Nelson, great series! I have one question: Black played g6 before castling. Why can't black then try to castle queenside, knowing that castling kingside could be vulnerable to a dark square attack? For example, at 10:30, instead of 0-0, why not Be6, escaping the pin while also preparing to move the queen and castle long?

But here you say (tip 5): Wait with your attack until all your pieces are ready and developed. How can I tell whether I should wait or attack?

Hi Nelson. What is your viewpoint if at 10:33 the black had moved it's knight to G8? It would give additional support to the pinned bishop and also guard the weakened dark squares f6 & g6.

One question, Nelson, I tried to play an attacking game, sacrificed the pieces like how it was done in the book, and lost the game extremely badly, I thought I was doing alright, maybe even winning. What if Black sees the danger and decides to cut their losses and sacrifices the Queen for the Bishop and says I at least got a Rook for the Queen and the attack on the dark squares had become weaker?

Bh6 isnt really threatening anything. It also give black time to castle queenside in the long run. As you could see from what was played in the game. Keeping the B on g5 puts a lot of pressure on the knight. (Castling kingside isn't even that good, but because there is so much power behind white's attack. They kinda have to.

@@lucienhiemsta4805yeah but its hard for balck to ve able to castle queenside because everytime black's light squared B moves, b7 gets snatched with Qb5+, and if bd7 from black preventing Qb5+, then black's queen cant be developed.

@@twiduha First of all, you dont have to develop the bishop to d7 in order to stop Qb5+. You can also play c3, which gives more room for the black queen to develop and allows the Bishop on d6 a home. Second of all, another possibility is playing Ng5, attacking the bishop on h6, so the bishop has to drop back (notice that Bg7 falls short, because of Rg8 and the bishop is trapped (ofc going to e4 isn't any good).

Nelson, FWIW, I have an older version of the book, and the page numbers don't line up. In mine, each new game starts immediately after the previous game ends, not on a new page. That said, I have no problem telling where you are, just wish my version had new pages for new games.

i might be stupid but im not really sure what the specific lesson is here. dont play g6? dont push pawns that create weaknesses? I play the pirc so g6 gets played a lot and I already try not to create weaknesses but i play the pirc soooooooo.

at 3:02 I think knight c3 to e2 is better in my opinion as you can protect the d4 pawn with pawn c3 in future white can also rotate that knight around to g3 to get more attackers. why is this plan not that good

Its not an advantage to have extra pieces , if they are inactive . So many beginners dont develop fully, and get their rooks into the game.

If black King takes the knight white plays pawn to g4 and wins the bishop because the bishop is now pinned. End result is white have queen and rook against 2 rooks and that should win.

If black gives up its queen for a white minor piece, then there is still a white queen and a white minor piece which are both ready to take advantage of the dark square weaknesses on black’s kingside, and the checkmate threat cannot be stopped.

You really need a pop filter for your microphone. Or you could move your microphone away from directly in front of your mouth. The thumping noises from your "P" and "T" sounds hurt when wearing headphones.
