the JB weld wasn't too hard. Just make sure you mix it really well and use disposable gloves. Hey Brad, just looking for some clarification about the process for a freezer with an aluminum interior. Is application of a self etching primer necessary prior to the pond shield? If so, do you sand before or after applying the self etching primer?
@edwardsfamilyworkshop Жыл бұрын
From what I've learned yes you should probably sand before you use the self etching primer. I don't have any experience with aluminum interior. I would recommend you look for the Facebook group DIY Chest Freezer & Chiller Cold Plunges. It's run by a guy named John Richter and you will find a ton of great information there. Thank you so much for the compliment. If you have the aluminum interior you'll have to do an extra step. Everything else in my video still applies. I use a whole house filter for filtration and a ozone generator to help keep the particulates under control. I also always have a shower and use a brush to scrub away any loose skin cells. Hey Brad, how is this coating holding up over time? Did you do a 3'rd coat or wish you would have? I saw one of the comments talked about the metal interior versus the white. With all the research you did, do you think as long as it is sanded well the metal interior does not need a self etching primer before the pond liner? That adds a bunch of cost and complexity, so I would be very happy to just sand very well, do JB weld, and then pond liner. Also did you think about doing any kind of flakes on the last layer like a garage floor to make it more grippy? Just a thought.
@edwardsfamilyworkshop Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt sorry for the delay. You know I had enough to do a 3rd coat and If I were to do it again I'd definitely do it. Once I had my process down it didn't take too much more effort. Next time I drain my plunge I just might add the 3rd coat. It can only serve to make it more robust. As far as self etching primer goes it's absolutely not necessary. I had a few conversations with other plungers and it was unanimous. In my experience I've never felt the need to add any sort of grip to the bottom. Just take it easy getting in and out. Hope that helps

It definitely protects well and gives me that extra piece of mind. Hey, Brad After a few months how is this working out for you? I recently bought a freezer and have been doing a ton of research. Have you used the freezer prior to the pond shield? It appears that you just have to fill in the edges with some type of sealant. Then you sand the freezer down, and the and in 2 coats of pond shield. Am I missing anything?
@edwardsfamilyworkshop Жыл бұрын
The pond shield has held up amazing. I cold plunge pretty much every day and there's been zero peeling or any issues. I first sealed all the seams with JB water weld which in my opinion is absolutely necessary. Some people look for cheaper ways but when you're spending this much time and money it pays to do things right. After the JB water weld I lightly sanded with 80 grit and put 2 coats of pond shield on. If you put the second coat on within about 10 hours theres no need to sand again. After 10 hours you would need a light sand again for adhesion. When I first started I had a used freezer set up about 2 years ago that I only used JB water weld on. It held up for about a year then it just died. I suspect that with only the JB the water eventually seeped in and that was that! Spend the extra $200 or so and make it last for years to come. Any other questions just ask buddy
