Hi Dr Matthews, I use a Polar T31-Coded chest strap with my Galileo Sol scuba diving computer. I dive with it both in a dry suit and a wet suit. Today my heart beat reading seemed way off the charts; it started out reading 67 to 71 bpm then it jumped to between 195 and 205 bpm while very slowly swimming along the bottom. I surfaced to see if I could notice anything wrong. Instantly on the surface, the heart rate monitor dropped to 60 to 65. I dropped to the bottom (8-ft deep), and it instantly went up to 195 to 200 bpm. I repeated this surfacing three times before aborting the dive. My dive buddy, a fireman, thought either I wasn't wearing my strap correctly or that there was a malfunction in the computer. I have dove with this system for four-years with no problem until now. The dive computer battery is full, and the computer works perfectly. I have been diving for 45-years. I am considered a high-end athlete when I am tested at the hospital. I do between 13 to 15 METs on the stress test. My blood pressure is usually 118 over 79, and my heart rate is usually 60 bpm at the doctor's office. My PCP reluctantly told me 133 bpm is the top end for me. My cardiologist will not give me that answer, and the two cardiac nurses I dealt with refused to tell me the top end bpm. I have no damage to my heart. I am told my heart is "perfect" when they do echocardiograms on me. I wear the strap over my solar plexus with the strap touching my lower pectorals; there is a gap between my solar plexus and the strap that I can place my finger underneath. Is it time for a new chest strap or a new dive computer?

Obviously you should follow whatever your doctor's are telling you. If you are allowed to return to your normal activities and the strap is still acting up I would try making sure there is moisture between the strap and your chest. It can bounce around with high and low numbers when it gets a poor signal. If that doesn't work I would try getting a new strap first. They are cheaper. Good luck.

Polar H7 or Polar OH1 sensors can also be paired to Polar watches or to Garmin watches, an then synchronized over the internet to Polar or Garmin servers. But access of sensor raw data is difficult for instance in Garmin Connect. These two sensors are Bletooth smart (BLE) sensors which are compatible with many devices. My personally, I would not buy a Polar T31 anymore, the newer Polar sensors have BLE connectivity, which is a widely accepted standard.

Thank you for all your well thought out comments. If you are interested, here is a link to a pilot research project I did using the heart rate monitor and a finger blood pressure system to compare their ability to perform resting heart rate variability analyses vs an ECG unit. digitalcommons.wku.edu/ijesab/vol9/iss8/47

@@VivoPhys Thank you, Evan, for the link. I m on a project to analyse the effect of meditation training on changes of resting heart rate and other parameters,. it is a long-term study. I m facing troubles to have accurate data 24 h 7 d. I m experimenting with a setup with Bitalino ECG, Polar OH1 and Polar H7 recorded simulaneously to prevent data loss. It is hard work.

Question. Are results affected if the elastic strap is too tight? Asking for tensioning instructions.
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 2 жыл бұрын
You want it tight to ensure good contact with the skin. Basically make it as tight as you can without discomfort.

Great video, thank you. What is your take on the chest strap heart monitors that pair with your watch? I've been hearing good things about it. But logically thinking, with all that radiation, and bluetooth rays going and working to and fro around your body, with one of them right on top of your heart, is it really "not" dangerous from a help perspective? Anyone?
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys Жыл бұрын
Hi Erkut Gurun. I do not see any danger in using these devices. We are all surrounded in radio waves at all times. They are inescapable.

Hello, I have a pectus excavatum. How should I locate the Heart rate monitor? planning to buy a polar h10 but because of my deformation, there is a gap between the middle of the chest and the strap, how can I locate it?
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys Жыл бұрын
You can adjust the strap up or down slightly as needed to make contact between the electrodes and the skin.

Hi Boshi1990 Nagare. Yes it is. This is essentially a simplified ECG signal. It does not give blood oxygen saturation.

Is there an app I can use to receive signals as I can’t find the watch?
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mishal almulla. With some creativity you can find several hardware devices that can receive this signal. I think the issue is less about finding an app and more about having hardware. The hardware will likely come with its own app.

This strap does not store data, but others types can. Some receivers that can connect to this strap can store the data though.

@VivoPhys

The strap needs to be in direct contact with the skin. You can put your clothes overtop of the strap and it will still transmit to the receiving watch.

Hi Yunus Emre Ersahin. The belt used in this video is not designed to work with smart phones and smart watches. Some of the newer more sophisticated ones do though. Sorry I cannot give much more information. Hopefully someone else will reply.

It would depend on the model of chest strap you have. The more advanced models can integrate with several different apps. I don't know them off hand though. Sorry.

You don't show very good detail on the position on the chest.... Shouldn't it be off center, just to the left..... Where the heart is?

The polar sign in the center of the device should be in the center of the chest just below the level of the pectoral muscles.

Maybe but I wouldn't count on it. It requires skin contact with moisture between the skin and belt. It would need to be a very big dog to fit and would need to have very little fur on its chest.
