They make out change is for the better even pre covid the town centre was empty compared to the film from the 60s and 70's. I'm 56 but can remember well getting the 99 east Midlands bus from Marsh Lane to a very busy Chesterfield where even up to the mid 80's you could get whatever you set out to buy from independent shops oh and Woolworths, progress my arse.

I was born in Chesterfield, Brampton. I left Chesterfield in 1971 and now live in Malta. About 8:12 minutes the commentary mentions the two ladies in red; they are my mother and sister, the man with them is me. I never knew this photograph had been taken. Thank you for an enjoyable trip down memory lane.

this was my younger teenage years. many memories here. I did a Saturday ob on the market and was a choir boy in the crooked spire. even remembered when no-one local could get into the service when the bbl cam for the Sunday broadcast. it still all holds a special place for me even though having joined the Raf not lived there for many years. many thanks for sharing these .

What a lovely photographic record! Shows too well how town centres have changed over time and little shops vanished into oblivion. Particularly tobacconists! True to all town centres. A fairly recent record but Amazon and on line shopping has killed the appearance of the time I knew well in my teens.

What an excellent truly fascinating video! In the first half of the 1960s I would (aged 13 -16) regularly visit Chesterfield travelling from my home village in Stanton by Dale. The Queen's Park Athletics' Track was then the county's main athletics centre and both the schools' and AAA's championships were held there every year. This video illustrates how times have massively changed. Often for the worse and I can cite one example of such: From age 14 years I would catch an omnibus to Ilkeston and then thumb a lift from Ilkeston to QPA, and such was perfectly safe. And get there before the 10 am commencement, invariably meeting some lovely drivers en route! How many sane parents would nowadays allow such a venture?!

I cant tell you how wonderful this video is. I was born in Chesterfield in 1967 but moved in 1991, to Worcestershire. How I miss the town as it was, walking around the market with my grandma (market traders used to flirt madly with her!), and tripping on the cobbles in high heels as a teen. Chesterfield was a great place to live, and it probably still is. Thank you so much for this walk down memory lane :))

What a terrific compilation. Love it. Lived in Chesterfield from around 1974 until 1990 or so. Was living across from the Robinsons' factory in Brampton when it burned down in the 1980s. Frazer Wright might remember it. Thanks for putting it all togther.

I live in Chesterfield and was born in the town. I know change is going to happen like it or not but I do feel that too much has been demolished over the years . Many of these photos show buildings that could have enhanced the town but we're torn down often replaced with anywhere buildings just making the town a clone of other towns not of individual character.

Moved up to Wingy, then Ashover in 72. Recall the buildings on what became the donut cpark in front of old Royal Hospital being knocked down that year i think. Recently uncovered as archeo evidences (!)

Dose anyone know the man who made the film I would love to know. This man is a Chesterfield legend.
@paulhopkinson6103 жыл бұрын
The man that made it was George Martin. He used to show his slides to societies around town in the 80s. I remember seeing several different shows. He also does the narration. I assume that he's no longer with us these days. Few people used colour when he took his slides and it really brought it to life. Like you say, a local legend.

George Martin was a woodwork teacher at William Rhodes Secondary School in the 60's and 70's. He also ran the school Photography Club. Lovely to hear his voice again after all this time. Nice man I recall.
