Michael Francis Gilbert was an English solicitor and author of crime fiction.
Gilbert's writing career spanned the years 1947 to 1999 with his final work being Over and Out. The genres his fiction novels enveloped included police procedurals, spy novels, short stories, courtroom dramas, classical mysteries, adventure thrillers, and crime novels. Following his death, The New York Times quoted one of Gilbert's publishers regarding his writing style: "Michael was an exceptionally fine storyteller, but he's hard to classify. He's not a hard-boiled writer in the classic sense, but there is a hard edge to him, a feeling within his work that not all of society is rational, that virtue is not always rewarded."

The quality that the BBC was churning out during those decades was stunningly good. This is yet another of them. Cheers for uploading them 👍

Synopsis: An author has finished writing a book about his experiences in WWII....all but the last chapter. He has contracted with the publisher to produce the final chapter by an agreed upon date. When that time comes, the author asks for extensions making excuse after excuse. The publisher sends an employee to determine what's going on. What that employee finds raises much more serious questions.

This was great. Thank you for uploading it. Gordon Loftus was played by a young James Bolam ("Terry" in "The Likely Lads"). Tony Naylor Smith was played by the unmistakable Maurice Denham Laurie was played by Anna Cropper (or Copper?); not a name I knew, but she was very good. I didn't catch the name of the actor playing Randy, but I know his voice well, and he's been in loads of films and TV. I thought the sweary editor/ publisher sounded like Brian Cox, but I don't think that was the name in the credits, but I didn't catch what it was. Edit: He was called Datson, played by Alan Barry. Rest of cast: Randolph (Randy) Aplin: Alan Cutherbertson Policeman: Geoffrey .Collins Inspector Viggers: Peter Tuddenham Jessica Rayburn: Katherine Helm Ben Bannister: John Pullin Leslie: Nigel Anthony

Two main voice styles for mid century Brit actresses. One is used by this actress, the other is an older lady style with the deeper, slower voice. They all sound like the same 2 people.
