My understanding is that this melody is an old Indian tune...it's haunting and I believe Simon and Garfunkle had a hit with it.
Chet's beautiful echo and masterful touch in this makes it a keeper!

Somehow... To me at least, Chet is one of the most respected guitarists ever yet somehow seems underrated. He's that special.

I love the reverb echo thing. I finally found this version, been seeking about 39 years.

Chet always left you wanting more. It wasn't just what he played, but what he didn't play that made him great. He never added more than the song needed. Beautiful work!

Does anyone in 2011 really have enough peace (even if they have enough talent) to have the spirit to play something half as beautiful as the many beautiful pieces that this man played? (once upon a time, when there was more optimism & hope in this country). Thanks!

And all around the world, there is hardly a place even in Europe now.

It was from Peru I think back in 1913. I heard it the first time in Nakon Phanom Thailand in April of 1968. Loved it ever since.

Paul Simon even said it was inspired by a traditional Peruvian tune mainly by wooden flutes ( some of which are considered "recorders"). Just as soccer is called football (or futbol) in most of the world. Pax, stay well and safe!

This song was composed by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles, "in 1913 as part of a zarzuela, a musical play that alternates between spoken and sung parts, by the same name." (Quote from Wikipedia)

Quechua is the language of the Andean people in Peru, as well as Ecuador. Spanish is their second language. I used to live in both countries at different times of course. The facts are correct that Danile Alomia Robles wrote this tune.

...if I could, I surely would. I'd rather be a hammer than a nail, yes I would... Wow, the things you learn about tunes that are changed around over time. Shades of "Edmund Fitzgerald" and such. Thanks, Daffydoug.

Years ago, I bought my first Chet LP, simply called "The Best of Chet Atkins" and from his photo on the cover I thought he was indeed part native American. Long hair was the go then, so maybe that added to the effect. Thanks for all your uploads, Daffy.

Since the ancient of South America had no stringed instruments, we are talking about Spanish people giving guitars to the natives and then they make music right? It could have been composed on flute-whistle type instruments, most likely. I am glad that they composed it and that it survives, but get real. By the way ancient Hawaii didn't have stringed instruments either.
