Chet met Diane way back around 1964-65 at Ricardo's in San Jose, Ca. Diane was playing drums in Don McCaslin's (Donnie McCaslin's Dad) house band on a Monday night, when Chet walked in, asking if he could sit in. He was learning to play again after getting robbed and beat up in San Francisco, ending up with damaged teeth. He asked Don if could sit in. Don obliged, and Chet proceeded to struggle through a set or two. I remember walking up to the stage and asked my buddy John Mueller, " Who the hell is that, and why is Don letting him play?" John, who had been sitting in on piano, said "You don't know who that is, do you? That's Chet Baker". That was the night that Diane met Chet. The rest is history. Chet got his chops back and Diane stayed with him, and cared for him for many years. Chet's been gone a long time now, But Diane is still alive and John still keeps in touch with her, and he still plays periodically in the Phoenix area (Generation Gap). Don's in his early 90's and still plays weekly with his band "The Amazing Jazz Geezers" at Severino's in Soquel, CA. As for me, I'm still trying to make a buck. Jon www.jonbartz.com

So much to say in that Way Chet blew his soul through his horn. His tone is so full of compassion and tenderness here. So much gentle affection... when you know about his life and contrast the memory of all that with his music, you have something so unbelievable. I love Chet... the greater things about him, not his weaknesses, but I accept them too as part of who he was. What a soul. To think he just couldn’t exist today, for no other reason than that there’s no space to breathe anymore. To just be without a camera in your face with a world of eyes to criticize you should their gaze be directed your way. A prison of perfection, somehow. Thanks for uploading. Perfection.

Chet Baker tocaba de manera realmente increíble. Este álbum (Diane) fue grabado en 1985, tres años antes de su lamentable muerte. Hay algún trompetista con quien se pueda comparar? Sabe alguien quién es la mujer que está en la foto?
