Six Ps of Statement of Purpose 1. Purpose Clearly articulates goals and interests. Answers questions such as: "Why do you want to do graduate study in the first place? Why do you want to pursue this particular degree?" Research Interests? Professional Knowledge? "What do you want to do after you complete this program?" 2. Past Experience What skills or knowledge do you hope to gain from this program? How does your past experience relate to this program? Paper Published? Project? Presentation? Use vivid examples! 3. Program Why this particular university? How does your work/interest connect with the program? How does the program fulfill your needs and interests? Expectations of the program? Methodology? Curriculum? Professor to work with? 4. Personality What makes you unique? 5. Plain English Simple. effective, appropriate words. 6. Process Start early (3-4 months, about July/August). Read sample SOPs. Draft. Rewrite. Follow Directions. Proofread. Get feedback.

Hi Dhiraj, that's a great question. Usually I find that certain programs at specific universities are geared towards start ups and some towards jobs, whereas others are oriented towards continuing research. So to answer your question, it is very important for you to mention your future plans and aspirations, however, if they are aligned to the focus of that program, the university will find you to be a better fit.
