I'm starting to suspect Travis's luck is comedy-based. Straight-laced half-orc with a tragic backstory? Three consecutive nat 1s at a carnival game. This is how a character pulls off evil alignment without the audience not liking the character
@anjelica948 Жыл бұрын
Just my own opinion, I think Chetney has a Lawful Neutral alignment. He definitely does things that can be considered evil, like this instance, but its because he has his own code he follows, and he considers the merchant’s actions evil, and won’t abide by it.
@Jason-kp4vc Жыл бұрын
@@anjelica948 He's chaotic neutral imo, I see a lot of Grog in him. I'd view this instance as evil but several of Chet's actions dissuade me from it and make me think it was closer to neutral than evil. He genuinely believes he was swindled and wants (in his mind) the merchant to stop scamming other people, not just himself. He didn't take her money or stuff (IIRC) and despite having attacked her, made sure she'd survive by cauterizing her wound with his rite (that costs him his own blood) and giving away a healer's kit that's worth 5 gp.

@@anjelica948Alignment is a general disposition. Even a good person is capable of evil acts. In some sense this is more in the vein of Chetney throwing a temper tantrum. Many things in TTRPGs are this broad and that doesn't encapsulate a character well. The various backgrounds in 5E are just as bad. They're mere potential starting points, especially for beginners, to allow you to get into character. The problem of alignments (though you are right that different people view them differently) is they can become the source of ethical arguments, create stereotypical flat characters or even played so stupidly over the top that your character becomes a caricature. But they are just tools. They aren't the end all be all and their flaws allow them to be misused same as any. I say this in defense of alignment because they aren't the source of the bad. You just have to realize the limitations of any tool, mechanical or otherwise, that you employ.

Then dnd beyond is a ripoff too 🤣
@deleteman900 Жыл бұрын
I mean, proper quality tools are expensive IRL too. Maybe not 'eight years worth of wages' but certainly into the thousands of dollars depending on what profession you need tools to engage in. You *can* buy cheap crap, but you'll have to buy it again and again. In a more medieval setting, tools for a tradeskill (carpentry, blacksmithing, etc.) would be considered to be family heirlooms. Passed down to your son when he takes over the business, etc.
@JudgeMagisterSnow Жыл бұрын
I always assumed gold was maybe a month's worth of their salary, not a year's worth. Yeah, that's... it's insane, because you'd think there'd be more bandits and adventurers in the world to make up for that. Which would fuck the economy up a *lot* by proximity, because the line between the two is miniscule on a good day, and really boils down to 'ideology' which can also be broken down to 'mood', given how temperamental many people can be.

If you come to the police and give them those two possible leads, you’d be dismissed outright and wouldn’t be taken seriously at all. They’d do some minor investigation, probably have the local Merchant's Guild representative issue a general mandate to have security in their places of business to avoid such an incident occurring in the future, however it’s highly unlikely they’d discover who the culprit was. Police work, especially detective work, is a pretty lengthy process which can take weeks for certain cases, or even months if it’s a particularly large case.
