I would have to say DIY or not this is the information that needs to be shared and viewed. Customers and DIYer need the whole picture of why the repair industry is as it is. Buying tools from hand tools all the way up to scan tools, scopes and subscriptions to dealers, identifix,and and Mitchell's proondemand cost money and the knowledge to use them to make the right call the first time as quickly as humanly possible is even more valuable than that. All to provide the best service to the customer and because of the all around lack of this information some individuals,oh well you know what they do. Keep rocking Mr.O.

It seems more likely to me that someone installed a new battery w terminals reversed. Jumper cables are so crappy these days. The other thing I don't understand is why the alternator diodes didn't sacrifice themselves until failing shorted, followed by fusible link failure. Assuming silicon diodes in the alt, the voltage would be limited to about 2 volts negative.

I have taken my Saturn Vue (earlier version of this SUV) to the local Chevrolet authorized dealer/service center, only to find they could not access tools and parts to repair HVAC. Went then to a highly-rated local garage, they did the work no problems.
@geosutube4 жыл бұрын
Follow-up comment on my Saturn Vue (2008), later taken up by Chevrolet and poorly reconfigured: Needed body work to repair low-speed collision, repair shot repaired the AC in front, runs much cooler. Now at 104,000 miles and still running strong, 18 mpg in town. Full time AWD, 6-speed, BUT: Looking at the problems Eric had with the control panel disassembly, I’m now considering having the fancy HVAC module ignored. I get heat and cold, but the thermostat does not work consisitnely. Nor do the interior lights work consistently. I think it was monkeyed with by the Saturn mechanics before I bought it. I am going to keep it simple. I will not spend thousands to fix a car worth only $5000.

They're not alone on that. Some bright star at Nissan stuck ATF lines under the battery. Driving home and no forward gears, accompanied by a long shitstain down the road behind us. WAY worse than the PCM next to it, since the battery is in a sealed case and the PCM usually sits off to the side. Common in cars due to the lack of space. Also the PCM is there to help keep it cool, and provide quiet grounding.

Wait... You charge for all this stuff?!! I thought this was a KZbin channel where you just explain stuff. 😂😂😂 Great series. And thanks for bringing us along. Wow. Lots of damage to the magic smoke devices. As a design engineer, seems that, at the drawing board, one could build in a polarity protection circuit pretty simply. I did it on an Arduino project. 2 FET’s and a steering diode. Reverse the polarity, and pop goes the fuse. Not elegant, but cheap and effective. I guess they want you to occasionally blow up those expensive parts for revenue. Thanks again!! Great video(s)!!

If GM was jonesin' out over $.50 cheaper ignition switches do you think they care about polarity protection?
@Blazer02LS4 жыл бұрын
There are polarity protection items on most vehicles, however they seldom seem to actually work, so instead of blowing a master fuse or a couple diodes, it blows a module or the entire fuse box circuitry.
@arcadeuk4 жыл бұрын
What is interesting here is that there must have been some polarity protection, because the car was still working (i.e. it still ran and drove) so even though the modules had faults, they were still mostly working, but they had lost their ability to store (some) data. My best guess here, is that there is usually a separate power line for "keep alive" voltage going to the modules, which usually just powers the RAM, and as the RAM appears to be the only thing damaged, I bet they forgot to put reverse polarity protection on the keep alive line!
@neilmurphy8454 жыл бұрын

I put my Chrysler 300c CRD in the shop when my ABS light came on. (Tone rings failed). They put it on the diagnosis and came up with so many codes, they wanted to re-build my car. They even charged me $100 for the diagnosis. I took a rain check, said 'just fix the brakes'. Got my own machine (Foxwell for $160) and did the other stuff myself. (glow plugs, swirl plates and HID aim). The machine has paid for itself.
