Chevrolet Corvette C4 - Noise! Torque! American style

I finally get behind the wheel of that US powerhouse, the Chevrolet Corvette C4. By US standards, not that powerful with 240bhp but that V8 engine provides plenty of torque!
Built in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the legendary Corvette uses a light fibreglass body and L98 V8 engine to provide entertaining acceleration. But what is it actually like to drive a Corvette? Time to find out!
HubNut merchandise can be found at hubnut.org - thank you.

The first few model years sold in very low numbers. In 1955 only 700 units were sold. The sales numbers were so bad that GM was going to cancel the model and then Ford saved it. Yes, Ford saved the Corvette. In 1955 Ford released the T-Bird and it outsold the Corvette by a wide margin. GM wasn't gong to be shown up by Ford so they continued with the Corvette, making substantial improvements. Eventually the Corvette came into its own.

C4 was legitimately a world-class sports car through most of its run, even excluding the ZR-1. 245hp only seems laughable now, but in the context of the mid 80s, when a 300zx turbo made 200, a 911 made ~220 and a Ferrari 328 pumped out a heroic 280 - the vette kept up, and was priced orders of magnitude cheaper than anything that could outrun it - and it had better skidpad numbers than most to boot (iirc it was one of the 1st to pull over 1g lateral-at the cost of a harsh ride to be fair). Iconic for a reason and a helluva value these days!

The most unusual effect experienced by Corvette driver's is the seat location. When driving you are located just ahead of the rear axle. Meaning approximately 2/3 of the car is in front of you. Giving you the feeling of driving from the back seat of a ordinary automobile. Most apparent when trying to pull into a busy intersection with cars in the next lane. By the time you can see what is approaching, most of the Vett is already in the intersection!😮

GM hardly helps matters with its numbering/lettering scheme. I mean, there have been at least 4 different LT1 engines over the yearrs and one was an LS. This '88 Vette at least had alloy cylinder heads instead of cast iron. I'd say, unlike his encyclopedic knowledge of old Brit crocks and bangers, Ian's knowledge of US cars hovers at the empty mark. As in , he knows virtually nuttin' worth relying on, but if you're enchanted by a Standard 10, he's your man!

The C-4 frame rails are 14 peices welded together at the factory. And as the car ages they get creaky. When the 1997 C-5 came out they made the frame rails 1 peice each side. Made by injecting water under pressure inside the frame rails it helps it hold the desired shape while it's being stamped into the shape they needed. Called hydroforming. Makes for a stiffer structure. I got a ride in a ZR-1. it was a brutal fast 405hp ride around pocono. The 1989 to 1992 years the lotus designed 32 valve aluminum block and heads 5.7 V-8 were rated at 385hp. 1993-1995 Zr-1's were rated at 405hp. Proplem was the stock ZR-1'S would overheat if you kept running it around a race track. You had to put a aftermarket larger radiator in it for racetrack duty.

As a Brit living in California during the 90s to the 2010s I had the pleasure of owning both a C5 coup and then a C6 convertible. They were amazing cars that were effectively the poor man's Ferrari. Wherever you went you drew smiles and attention (especially when they were new). They truly were wonderful GTs let down by a fatal flaw. You mentioned it in your video Ian. The atrocious interiors. These were not cheap cars but the interior fit and finish used to drive me insane. The badly fitted cheap feeling plastic panels with huge panel gaps with creaks and rattles everywhere. The interiors used to feel like the cheapest interiors that GM could make. My C6 was beautiful to drive and standing still it looked like art especially with the top down, but sit in it and it felt like the cheapest Chevy econobox. I drove a friend's S2000 and that was it for me. Was the Honda as quick? of course not. But the interior was tight and well made with no squeaks and rattles. My C6 was my last USA car. I've driven Japanese ever since. Maybe the new Stingray deals with this issue. It certainly looks like it but I've moved on. At 69 and I'm not going to be one of those silver haired old geezers crawling around in high performance Americana looking for my past youth. Powerful V8 engines with gobs of low end torque and a slightly heavy feel is what made American cars delightful to drive. Sadly, those days are coming to an end with even V6s becoming offered even less. A few exceptions including the present gen Corvette but at a very premium price.

Fyi. The roof fits perfectly in the rear hatch.

Have a 91 C4. Basically, agree with all you say. It's the best sports car value out there if you want my opinion, and the best car I've had. 10 tons of fun. Gorgeous looks; haven't noticed interior creaks, and interior quality seems to me to be on par with other cars. Many say it's not fast by today's standards - all i know is, it's plenty quick and I beat everyone at the lights :D

I feared the worst, with the open-toed sandals twitching over the over-sensitive throttle. But well done for keeping it all on the straight and narrow

Interesting to get an offshore view of my car. I have an 86 Convert, Indy Pace Car replica, 1 of 500 built. At some point before I got it, a '383' stroker motor was installed. It will give a new 'Vette a run for its money. Most fun one can have on a drive. Too much power is barely enough.'

For what you can buy them for today they’re the best bang for the buck. I have an 88 35th Anniversary car for over 20 years and enjoy it everytime I drive it. Also have a 71 Corvette 454 4 spd. Another fun ride

Incredible how we Americans take for granted seeing a stock GM steering column and knowing that there's a telescoping control there for reach as well as rake. I still want to say that's NOT an airbag on the passenger side. The C4 always had that dash design even before airbags! Rattling interiors, yes, a reality in which we had to grow up with. Still the cars felt like a tank compared to cars in most parts of the world. There was a feeling of massive safety and isolation in American cars, even more so than a Volvo. After years of growing up on CAR magazine and reading every column from LJK Setright and seeing all those British cars in pictures and then finally capping it with being able to see HubNut actually drive them, I'm SO pleased that HubNut is reviewing a left hand drive car as my brain can't grasp the concept of right hand drive lol

All the blub's! What a great sounding engine and a car that every teen in the 80's loved. The sound of a V8 is an amazing noise. Love the digital dashboard as well. Thanks for sharing Ian :-)

Ace, I loved these. I used to have a slightly low quality radio controlled one that my Dad bought me from Tandy.

Thanks for the upload. Having worked on and driven the ZR1 during my time working for Lotus, I can certainly attest to its then mind-blowing performance! Not to detract from the overall appeal and more-than-adequate performance of this particular car..😊

I used to like 'burbling about' in a 1984 Pontiac Fiero GT with a 2.8 V6 multi port fuel injected engine back in the 90s and that wasn't very economical! The panels on it were plastic and all were removable from the powder coated pressed steel space frame. The material used for the panels was called, I think, 'enduraflex' so maybe that's what that rear panel was made from that you mentioned. The Fiero is a car worth researching.

Fun video for someone who grew up around Corvettes of this generation to watch. Correction for you though, the LT1 wasn't the start of the LS engine family, it was just a small block 350. Some late C4s also had an LT4 available.

I used to find that design tacky and cheezy back in the days but now, compared to modern cars, I really appreciate the restraint.
