I had a 1984 bought used in 1986. It was an automatic alas, but it was my daily for many years and never gave me a moment's grief. Was surprisingly good in snow as long as it wasn't deep enough to turn the air dam into a snowplow--a couple of times I very carefully backed it up to somebody who was stuck and got them unstuck. I had it over 140 a couple of times--it felt rock-stable at that speed, no drama at all. Took many 1000+ mile drives in it and it was a comfortable cruiser. Heat wasn't great--don't know if that was a design issue or if there was an issue with mine. Might get another one at some point, although a C8 is tempting. Paid about 14K for mine IIRC.

The C4 is the first "modern" Corvette from which all future Corvettes were born from until C8. C4 still holds land speed records and dominated SCCA sports car racing to the point a separate series had to be developed for it. The C4 isn't fiberglass and it doesn't get spider web cracking. There is a '83 Corvette. It's in the museum in Bowling Green. There were production delays, so they cancelled the '83. They had built a few of them (can't remember the number) and GM ordered them crushed. I guess someone hid one and it's now in the museum. I do remember that the last of the C3's we're done in the new Bowling Green plant. Corvette had been built in St. Louis. I like the convertible body better on the C3, C4, C5 and C6. I never liked the bubble rear glass that they started on the '78. It only looked good on the '63. I actually preferred the convertible on the C2 as well. Nope. Both wrong. Two C4 went in the sink hole. A 1993 Ruby that had been donated to the museum, it was not restored. And the 1,000,000th built Corvette, a white/red convertible 1992 that was recovered, repaired and restored by GM "Styling". I put styling in quotes because I don't recall the exact entity that did the work, but the restoration was completed in-house at GM facilities. There's no such thing as a 1984 Pace Car, because the Corvette did not pace Indy in 1984.

@@davep800 The Bowling Green Daily News reports that the sinkhole, said to be about 20 ft. deep and 30 to 40 ft. in diameter, triggered motion-detector alarms at 5:38 AM in the dome area of the museum. He's been an actual saint in dozens of previous lives probably. Jackpot. Imagine telling your mates that you're going to buy a boring old farmstead in Kansas and there's a total car nut practicing supermodel that's going to be all over you and your cars.

I wanted to be judgmental when I heard part of the story, but after watching this video, I gotta be honest… I think most people would have left their wife and kids for her. Damn.

I drove a 95 C4 for a long time and I loved it. My only gripe about the car would have been the rubber coating on the face of the dash. That stuff was crap! Fun car MPG was pretty nice loved the Targa top.

Elder millennial here (late 30s)! I would love to have one of these. It doesn't need to be fast, just a comfortable cruiser. Also, metric is the superior measurement.

I remember the last episode of MASH in February, 1983...GM did a big ad buy and used some of the commercial time to introduce the all new '84 Corvette. The early 80s special effects in the commercial seemed to overshadow the car. The C4 was a huge departure from the C3 and I think was a sign the Malaise Era was starting to end, especially with the tuned port injection introduced in 1985.

Only one Callaway C4 Sledgehammer was ever made! Yes that one that made front page of every car magazine and rewrote records with it's incredible 254mph top speed yet it never was sold! Reeves Callaway displayed it in museums and finally sold at auction! Unfortunately we lost Reeves Callaway last year at the age of 76!

C4 prices are correct. I've owned a C4 (one of the best of that generation, a '96 LT4 manual convertible, polo green w/ tan interior), sold it, bought a '14 C7 coupe a year later. The C4 felt like a go kart on steroids. It was fun to drive fast, but sucked to actually drive somewhere. One of the best garage queens I've ever owned with that gorgeous coke bottle shape and the clamshell hood (pure gearhead porn), I could sit in my garage and just stare at it for hours. Starting it up and putting it in gear would put a smile on your face... for about 10 minutes. And then the squeeks, rattles, hard plastic, and generally cheezy interior just got old. The C7 still had the Corvette vibe but was a much, much better *car*... a genuine grand touring car with performance that put the C4 to shame

I'm British and have a soft spot for Corvettes as well. The C4 was my childhood one with stuff like the A-Team. And that digital dash as silly as it is really would really make it for me. But also like Tyler I think the C1 is just so pretty. Restomodded or even EV swapped I would daily that thing.

The nicest part of these is that a lot of them have spent their lives in a garage, had their oil changed on time, and any issues were quickly addressed. Remember that this car cost $30K new while a 1999 Buick Regal could be had for $13k. The people that bought these were aficionados, not just car owners. These cars were babied; washed, waxed, vacuumed, amour-alled, and polished. My 2014 Honda Civic has worn out seats, worn out floor mats, rust spots, and corroded wheels. My 1986 Z51 Corvette has none of that. There are paint chips and the it needs some tuning and new tires, but otherwise it's fine and driveable. And that's another thing: the Z51 variant is the reason to buy one all on it's own. This thing can take a corner at 40 mph without breaking a sweat. The handling alone is sooo worth buying it.

I got a 1996 LT4 6 speed black on black about 6 months ago and I'm in my early 40's. It's a blast to drive and so cheap compared to anything else that can compare. I see the market going up in the future but who knows!

Of all the "normal" C4's (not including Callaways, Grand Sports or ZO6's), the '89 is my personal favorite. L98- less power than the LT1, but no Opti-spark, ZF 6MT available, with the classic interior and dash as well as the pre-refresh exterior. If that 'vert had the ZF, it would be ideal.
