To change the EV truck use case so that it's also good at long distance towing, it needs to charge fast, like 5 to 10 min fast, and the infrastructure with trailer stalls need to be everywhere. Right now, the use case for EV trucks are for contractors and people that stay around town, and don't travel over 100 miles a day. So if all you need is 100 why add the cost and another 2500lbs of battery to eke out a little more that really doesn't solve anything. Hey Tom, just because of VWID.4 is parked at a 350 kW station doesn't mean that driver doesn't know any better, it could be that all the other stations were blocked when he arrived and that was the only available one. It's not about education, it's about better charging stations. Having different powered plugs at the same charging station is dumb. Also remember that even though an ID.4 can only charge at 125 or 130 kW it will still pull up to 325 or 330 amps. Many 150 kW DC stations only supply 300 amps, so technically an ID4 can still charge faster at a 350 kW station than a 150 kW station. For a guy that is supposedly a charging expert you don't seem to know all the ins and outs of this. It's about amps, not the "kW" rating. My old Focus Electric never charged at 50kW until I plugged it into a 150kW Electrify America station. Fun fact: my 2017 Ford focus Electric was the first public vehicle to ever charge on an Electrify America station at the inaugural opening of the network in Chicopee Massachusetts.

At EA you may pull up and they only have 4 dispensers, there may be 4 vehicles charging and so you take what ever becomes available first. Or maybe you pull into an empty station and you try the 150 but it fails to connect, so you have to move to a 350. In my Area EA has started dumping their 150 dispensers and making them all 350 which is much better. Having just got Tesla access (and I ordered a Lectron Vortex way back in January) all dispensers are the same which is also great for doing away with the mismatched charger/vehicle issue.

1. On your range test in a GM EV, if you need to stop to go to the bathroom, push the "keep vehicle on" button. It's under the physical volume button on the left side of your screen. It keeps the car on for 60 minutes. We tested this. We came back and all of our trip charge data did not clear. You still have the car running for a few minutes while you go to the bathroom, but at least you're not losing your trip charging data. 2. I'd love to see you test charging with AC on, in this and other vehicles, especially on hot days. I have a Silverado EV RST, and I have taken it on several summer road trips in 100 plus degree heat. At about 50 to 52% state of charge, if I'm trying to sit in the vehicle with AC on while charging, my charge rate goes down from 200 plus kilowatts to 30 or 40 kW. Turn off the AC and goes right back up to 200+. This is not great since I travel with a dog or grandbabies and there's not always a suitable location to sit and wait for charging that's not, literally, so hot that it's not life-threatening. It would have been nice to know this charging information before purchasing. But don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this truck!

30:31 In regards to the Bolt EVs on 350 kW EVgo stations: So long as they are splitting power, it's really a non-issue unless two Bolt EVs are plugged into the same 350 kW unit. Even the upgraded 350 kW Electrify America dispensers aren't an issue because that power is being shared with another dispenser. Either way, the responsibility really lies on the CPOs because they need to not only have enough stalls to meet customer demand but they also need to have sufficient power distribution. While I think that Tesla's Superchargers are still lacking in overall throughput (90 kW per stall is no longer adequate), they come the closest to balancing the number of stalls in combination with the required power distribution. That's a big reason it really doesn't matter that Bolt EVs have gained access to the V3 Superchargers.

Esecially because when I pulled in with Ioniq 5 those folks get mad if I try to explain because they are CONVINCED they'll charge faster at 350 even though their car is limited to 125... and if you try to talk to them, and explain, that if they move to 150kwh charger they'll charge as fast, but somebody with a car like mine (Ioniq 5) that would do 240ish, would only charge at 150, but could charge faster on 350, they think I'm trying o trick them to charge slower.... I mean, plenty of nice folks actually moved, and some I offered to pay, and they (I think) had the free charge or somethign so were willing to do it, and were all "sorry, i didn't know" which is coo, but I had plenty be mad and tell me to F-off (I even ahd a guy wait until I left to get McDonalds and I came back to find he had unplugged my car). That is Just mean, I was already charign at 150 with Ioniq 5, and he just unplugged my car. Turns out guy wasn't even in trip like I was (His wife was shopping at Walmart, and he decided to fill up car whil he waited. Well, aparently he daily DC Fast Charge his car to 100% so, Good lck to killing your battery dude, and I'd explain how that is bad, but he is a A-hole and won't learn, so Yeah. Be nice People. If I had car that charge slow (BOlt EV, Mini Cooper Se, or ID4, even Mach-E, I would only use 150 kwh. If you have car that is limited to about 150 kwh charge speeds, dont' take up the 350. I mean, I get you may get to charger, there are only 4 units and if the 150 are all take up, then Yeah, I get that. I am not askign to wait in that case, but if your are charging, one of the 150 kwh cars opens up, and car with faster chargiing like Kia EV6 or Ioniq 5, Lightning, Rivian, Silverado comes in, then PLease move? I ask politely, we neeed peple to just be nice to each other.

Until the price is slightly higher on the 350 kw chargers, the bolts are going to use them. Or do the tesla solution and keep all the charging post the same rate. (I know they're are a few that were V2 and had V3s added, those are rare).
@junehanzawa5165Ай бұрын
Tom, can you test how it charges on V3 Superchargers? I hear that the 3WT and 4WT can't charge on them because they're fleet EV trucks, but the RST is not a fleet truck.

I can say my Sierra EV does a max of about 180kw at Tesla SC. I have seen it slow down to 150kw after 10-15min prob due to the adapter (i have official GM/Tesla adapter). That seems to be the same case for both V3 and V4 dispensers.

@@rm10002 Thanks for the info. Would still love to see Tom record such a charging session with the RST. That's still a lot better that having faulty chargers, or Bolts and ID4's taking over the only 350kW chargers still working. 180 to 150kW gets it done most times. So, I LOVE the overall look of the Silverado EV RST even over the GMC Sierra! However, for 100K, I'd get the Sierra due to its higher quality interior (and for what I can tell) and ride. What I REALLY want is either a Silverware EV Trail Boss or see if GMC will make a Sierra AT4 (I want off road capability). Its crazy that this also Charges fairly fast for HOW HUGE the battery is and for the range! Won't be as efficient as asomething like MOdel X, but.... Really? A road trip truck? Again I think the Sierra (for what I saw in videos) seems to have a bit more compliant ride, so Yeah, and I'd like to see both the Range (tire, battery pack options) of the Trail Boss, but GMC Sierra would be a GREAT, Nice Road trip (think its a bit quiter too). Thing is... I would consider Silverado EV JUST on looks. Think it has the better looks.

There is another category of users that find this truck appealing. Those that travel regularly over 300 miles and haul stuff that takes up space in a vehicle like pets, water toys, building materials and want to launch or retrieve watercraft at the end of that long run. A car just doesn’t work.

@CedarMcKayАй бұрын
A note about the ID4 that was “taking your charger”. I’ve seen 200 kW on my 2024 pro S AWD, so I think it is legit for a ID4 to pass up the 150 KW, and pull up to an open 350 KW dispenser.
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughneyАй бұрын
I hear what you're saying, but please think about this. The maximum charging rate isn't as important as how long it holds that. The ID.4 doesn't hold over 150 kW for long, so the difference in time charging on a 150 kW station is negligible (2-3 minutes) and that's only if you plug in at a low SOC. If you plug in at 30% or higher - as so many people I see at fast chargers do, then it makes zero difference in a 350 kW or a 150 kW station.
@CedarMcKayАй бұрын
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney and I hear what you are saying. Agreed it wouldn’t make much difference if someone is charging to a high SOC. But when I road trip, which is often, I take the drive fast, charge fast approach. I try to get to charger with 5% SOC, and I will often leave at around 60% SOC. Charging like that, the higher power dispensers is noticeable. At least we can agree that Bolts have no business taking 350kW dispensers.
@MondernManАй бұрын
GM needs to focus on making the Equinox more competitive so dealers don't have to have massive discounts to move them (I'm seeing $13k off for new '24 models). GM already has the Hummer twins, the development costs for the RST should have gone elsewhere. A $100k EV truck with 400 mile range isn't something that many people want, need or can afford.

Why do people rely on the remaining miles indicator? They are inaccurate and highly varying. Now that you’ve done this test the better estimate is that you get around four miles per one percent charge. The percent of charge remaining is more consistent than the miles remaining estimate.
