I've got a 1996 6.5, love it. The only issue I've had so far is the water pump went out at 150,000. But other than that the fuel mileage is great and it starts in any weather. It was -2 this morning. But everyone has their own experience, some better than others obviously, with the huge cult following of people who love to hate the 6.5.

great engine just keep an eye on that PMD when it goes you need to do the PMD isolator with extension to the left fender, Put a fan on it and no more issues. IF you want more power put in the #9 resistor and put a K and N universal air cleaner right on the turbo and that truck will pull like anything.

and yes for sure I would take a 6.5 in cold weather over any ford. they just fire right up. My duramax fired up at 3 degrees with no issues first crank. My ford well it took a few times running the glow plugs. then was so noisy I had to let it idle for about 20 minutes.

I bought mine used off the original owner, so the pmd was already relocated above the right fender, but it's been great. I had an 82 Scottsdale with a 6.2 and that thing was one of the best trucks I've ever owned. That's what started it for me.

I have both a 6.2 and a 5.9 12v. They are just completely diffrent engines with diffrent intentions. The 7.3 and the 5.9 where med duty diesels. The 6.2 and 6.5 are light duty diesels. 7.3 and 5.9 came in school busses and dump trucks and box trucks and straight trucks. 6.5’s and 6.2’s came in 1 tons or 1.5 tons at most. Both are great engines but the 6.2 and 6.5 where made for economy and the 7.3 and 5.9 where made for med duty work. All great engines that get the job done. Love my 6.2 for the fuel mileage and cheap parts. Love my 12valve for the power.

@@drmachinewerke1 Probably the early IDI 7.3 were really good. they would last forever. Just when they went to the DI. then that is when some of the issues started. But they are not bad. I put a Heathe manual boost control on my 93 and it was bulletproof after that. It got 18.5,mpg at 70 mph with 4.10 gears on a one ton single wheel ext. cab 8 ' bed. That was much better than the gas engines.....to this day. Plus they recommend to readjust the injector pump at 100K. I didn't since I didn't know about it at the time. No doubt the DM is a stronger engine but my 93 had no computer on the entire truck. Probably the weak point was the NVG 4500 transmission.

I've got a 97 van with a 6.5 also. The was the guy that I bought it from had put the PMD along with a heat sink in a computer fan up underneath the driverseat. I bought the van with a bad injection pump with 210,000 miles on the van. This was the second injection pump that was on the van before I got it. GM had a recall apparently. I bought a used reman pump and a lot of other 6.5 pick up stuff for $300. I installed a fuel pressure switch that was a adjustable and a couple idiot lights and a fuel pressure gauge so I can keep an eye on the lift pump pressure. I adjusted the fuel pressure switch down so that the incandescent indicator light flickers at 4 PSI. I haven't done a lotta driving on the van it seems to run good and have plenty of power. The fuel pressure switch gives me some peace of mind lets me know if the injection pump will be starving for fuel. Because the fuel is ultra low sulfur now it doesn't have a lot of lubrication. I use either Marvel Mystery Oil or 2 stroke motor oil put into the fuel every once in awhile to keep the pump lubricated. The fuel or oil pressure switch came from Jegs. Installing the injection pump on this van was probably one of the least fun jobs I've ever done in my life. I put new injectors in a while I was installing the pump. It seemed to make sense at the time. Sure glad I did. The van seems to get around 20 miles to the gallon on the highway and gets16 around town. I have problems with the CDR acting weird. I also had turbo booster issues which actually turned out to be a broken vacuum line which I ended up fixing with heat shrink tubing. I've had thoughts of putting a manual injection pump on it and a catch can to replace the CDR. I got to say I really like the van but I sure hate working on it. if the engine craps out I'll probably put a 4bt in it just because it's so tight in the engine compartment with a 6.5.

@@TheNinja8000 see if the pmd has been relocated away from the injection pump. Preferable behind the front bumper or on top of the engine with a heat sink. Look for any possible vacuum line leaks. If there's any type of crank knock/ tick... walk away. The 6.5L has a higher diesel knock compared to other diesels. Don't mistake that for crank knock. The oil will probably black... it's just soot. Mine gets black within 1k miles after an oil change so don't worry there. Make sure the lift pump comes on... if it starts hard it might need oil pressure sensor. Drive it for a good 15 minutes and make sure it doesn't overheat... and really just the crank noise. Those were the two big ones. Most other common issues are fixable for pretty cheap. That kind of mileage and decent condition overall $3k-4k would be my upper limit on price.... good luck bud

I have had one problem with my 6.6 duramax and that is the injectors I have 225k miles. Has more power than my ford and no other issues. They have had some guys say they have problems with the head gaskets but I think usually it is misdiagnosed with the orings on the injectors not seating or botch install on them. They do have newer injectors that dont have problems. All my buddies drive duramax and none of them have any of the F-word issues. After having both engines and working on them both the duramax is easier to repair. I have done the water pump too which is a bit different but much easier than the ford. The only other things that go a bit haywire is the dash gauges, BCM chips can come loose in the conputer which is not hard to replace. I have had 2 duramax. the only reason I got rid o the first one is because my GPS shorted and caught fire it had almost 200k miles one set of injectors, water pump and that is it. Not junk vacuum pump actuated ..and a real exhaust ..it would tear the duramax down the street over the hill and through the river ! Instead they screwed it up intentionally then installed junk parts on it instead of ok parts ! All so they could come up with excuses to screw gm shareholders out of money to build the junk duramax. well for sure the most common problem is the PMD. But the squeaking noise is confusing me might be an exhaust leak but if it is really loud and knocking may be a bearing but not common. would need to hear it to know. Safest bet is to get a PMD and plug it in for a second and try it. Then it Dorman I think has a cheap one just to see if that is the problem. Then if it is get the isolator kit on ebay. They are cheap now. but put a processing fan on the finned cooler and away from the engine I use the drivers fender well. because there is power close by for the fan.

@@johnh1235 I bought a 1995 K1500, 6.5L Diesel last year and what I found out was that this particular engine would not run on Biodiesel. The first tank of fuel I bought was Biodiesel and all it did was roll coal, which I did not find funny especially because it was knocking real bad too and had no power. Bought some #2 diesel from Casey's and the problem went away completely. Not everyone can do this, but I cut out the cat and that made the thing breathe and with that not a bit of black, blue, or white smoke has come out of the tail pipe since.

6.5 isn't even comparable to the 7.3. 7.3 is so much more reliable than a 6.5 lol

well you can tell my 7.3 that it shouldnt have cracked the 3 pistons when they went. Also never had an oil leak on my 6.5. my 7.3 had so many oil leaks and oil lines explode. My 6.5 only had one problem that was the PMD. Once I did the mod all problems were gone.

300K is nothing for this engine. Last I knew a guy who had used his its whole life for pulling travel/rv trailer from manufacture to dealers had 930K on it and on his 3rd NVG 4500.
