Had a similar problem with a 84 Firebird years ago. Turned out the wire harness went from motor to the PCM through the passenger side front fender. There are drain holes at the bottom of the fenders for water to escape. When it rained, the water had no where to go and shorted out my main red wire carrying the 12 volts. Tested by jumping out the red wire. Worked just fine so I left the red wire jumped out for the rest of the time I owned till I totaled it. There was no rhyme or reason to when it would shut down just like yours. I stuck a screwdriver up the drain holes and they were clogged with dirt and leaves and brown water. Took awhile to figure all that shit out, but that’s what It turned out to be in my case. I don’t know how your cluster is routed, but that may be a way to go and keep your gutters and drain holes cleared out under your fenders. All vehicles have them. Hope this help and best of luck-sorry for your misfortune, but good video 👍
@TheSteelworker2 жыл бұрын
BTW-a bad cluster will make it have all symptoms yours is having. The next time your gauges “go screwy” bang the shit out of the dash with your fist. If it starts acting right again or shuts off, you need a new cluster-

Check wiring and plugs on pcm or ecm . If you were hitting the control module and the relays were clicking then you are losing voltage at the module. Vanna is getting to be high maintenance. Might be time to kick her to the curb.

I bought a cheap aftermarket coil pack with the ignition module from Amazon and it ate my cap up and completely destroyed my crank sensor. If you have the coil pack that has the integrated ignition module bolted to it, you might try and replace that. The module eventually goes bad due to all the heat soaks. When it warms up it likely starts to fail.

Maybe the ignition switch itself? I had a 97 suburban that would get intermittent signal from the key switch I traced it by turning the ignition on and off until I found a low voltage one time ?? That or maybe a MOSFET on the ECM which would just be a swap of the whole module ? Good luck brother I know how hard tracking down those intermittent problems are 😩

Small airplanes usually have 2 ignitions with a switch to change to other one if one fails. One fails switch to the other one. What if you ran a dedicated fused 12 volt power supply to ignition put a switch even.. See if it runs without dying then. Just a thought you could add a fuse to system with a low amp rating to protect the vans computer. You could also leave it in place in case you just needed to start van to move it if it dies out of the way of traffic. Just a thought. Make a wiring system just to run the van nothing else.

Check the crank sensor wiring. It’s a big known issue and it’s intermittent but can wreck havoc.
@MasonLee222 жыл бұрын
The crank sensor wires we’re making contact on my van and it had my gauges going crazy and had no spark no start intermittently. It would also act like a bucking bronco at times when driving down the road like my transmission torque converter was going bad. I was going through rotor caps every other month or so because the button was eating them up. The wires were up high though to the crack sensor and I had to take the protective wrap off to find it. But once I did everything was working again and like it was barely broke in lol. My motor now running so good and I thought it was about done because the issues. Check that wire harness for real. Any brittleness to them wires replace it and you’ll be surprised what all goes back to normal again.

Sounds like a bad coil. If your motor has only one ignition coil, swap for a new one. Those were notorious for shutting down after reaching a certain temp. If multiple coils...then you're looking at possibly a bad ICM.

@THISOLDOUTBOARD12 жыл бұрын
Hey. I feel for you. Trust me. I went the same route and changed the pump first too. It originally had a bad ground the pump was good. Then I changed out everything that would cause a no spark situation instead of testing everything. It was easier to swap out the parts/sensors then test everything individually and wait for the next thing to go bad. Nothing is worse than dying at an intersection, twice, especially with no hazard lights. I think it finally boiled down to the relays in the hood fuse box.
