The replacement timing belt kits have plastic tensioners and idlers also. That's why everything should be replaced around 60,000 miles. The belt,tensioner,idler and water pump. I got a TCKWP kit from Gates for about $150.00, Had a friend help took about five hours. Everything is good and won't have to worry about it for another 60,000 miles. I have a 07 Aveo with about 64,500 miles. It's also a good time to replace the serpentine belt since that has to come off anyway.

My Idler pulley failed on my 2011 Aveo Hatch. Vehicle is on 119500km, 500km still in warranty thank lord. Turns out its actually a service item and GM never serviced it, so found out today that I'm getting a brand new engine.

Daniel 120k warranty? wow usually isn’t it 3yrs/60k for engine? Anyhow I’ll take your word for it. Lucky you for engine replacement ciao
@123clis32110 жыл бұрын
I would take an Aveo motor over a Mini Cooper engine any freaking day for reliability. FYI the aftermarket Aveo stuff is better than OEM. And a woman will choose a $500 purse or pair of shoes over a $200 Aveo Timing Belt job.
@Toolaholic711 жыл бұрын
Does not do major damage,bends the valves only.I have pulled the head off and replace the bent valves.Luckily the aftermarket makes that idler pulley out of metal.Takes a special tool to rotate the water pump also made by Kent Moore
@dgrz110 жыл бұрын
There could be damage to the pistons also. The Aveo's have interference engines. The pistons strike the valves when the timing goes out. How do you think the valves get bent? Damaged pistons and valves is major engine damage.
@Toolaholic710 жыл бұрын
I have not seen one with damaged pistons yet.The valves just nick the pistons a little bit.If you want to see one with major damage done when the timing belt breaks,The Kia Rio.This one does major damage ruining the head and pistons.

Is there not maybe a 3rd party metal replacement you can get, problem is I just bought a 2013 Aveo (yea they were still importing them here till then) and now I am scarred that it is a ticking time bomb?
@beaumcelhattan582310 жыл бұрын
Not the only plastic part that blows on the Aveo. About a year ago, a plastic elbow that connects two radiator hoses blew on my Aveo. Snapped right in half. My local parts store had an aluminum one I bought, and they didn't sell the plastic variety (not that I would have gotten another!) Guess I better go ahead and replace the timing belt idler plastic crap before it blows.. ugg.. (mine is a 2004 Aveo hatchback)

Great video! I think something like that just happened to my tacoma. Running rough, almost stalling at times, with WHITE vapor coming out of the tailpipe, and then it got HOT! I shut it off and let it cool down. I only had about a quarter mile to go to the shop, too. After about 15 minutes I tried starting it and it sounded like a hammer and then a chainsaw. RIP!

Car companies still havent figured out that you CANNOT cheap out on very important parts... I have a honda powerwasher with a plastic cam gear, and lobe, and they are known to break very quickly. All companies have tried cheaping out with plastic and yet they still dont understand.

This my friend, is the result of automakers trying to save weight in every corner in order to achieve better MPGs and lower emissions to please EPA. At the end of the day (As you said) the poor customer is the one who will paid the costly repair bills. But wait until 2017 new EPA rules takes effect, you will see more plastic parts to reduce even more weight, thus more critical parts will prone to fail.

The tensioner and idler along with the water pump are designed to be replaced with the belt. Do this at the correct service interval and you will never have a problem guaranteed.
@123clis32110 жыл бұрын
I did this job and I don't want to say it's cake but it isn't that bad! Follow the maintenance schedule and plastic metal it doesn't matter. The water pump here is the tensioner, when that went likely the bearing in the idler got wet, over time and wear ran out of perm lube over heated and exploded. Frankly it's the owner. Plastic idlers are in the product line of most manufacturer's,

Kind of glad my truck has a timing chain rather than a belt, I know both have good and bad to them, but these days on modern engines the chain setup typically lasts the life of the engine, meaning I shouldn't have to worry about this kind of thing.

It's bad enough to see these on any engine, but it's almost criminal to do it on an interference engine. Expect to see more, as mandated fuel efficiency for new cars is taking priority over longevity and resale value in the minds of new car buyers.
