Great advice that will more than likely fall on deaf ears. I have an older Ferrari that as requires its belts changed every three years, no matter how many miles covered. The belt costs around £40 but the labour cost is over £1500. A ridiculous situation just to make money for the dealers. BMW have the best Idea, put the timing chain between the gearbox and the engine just to make the job really difficult . The timing belt is a much better idea than a modern timing chain as they don't seem to last very long (60000 miles and your pushing your luck) BMW and VW being the main culprits.

Thanks! Hopefully it will help people out. If you have the 308 or 328 Ferrari, they are very unreliable and high maintenance engines, beautiful cars but engines with the 2 timing belts are a pain to work on. Costs a lot because of the labor.

@@Motorcarnut Thanks for the reply. It's a 348 TS, a V8, one of the affordable models. It can do 28 mpg. Most parts are reasonable on price until you get to body parts. I do most of the work myself , but I don't own a two post lift, so the timing belt is difficult to do off the floor due to the height you need to lift the car.

I have a question i bought an 07 ridgeline used and it shows the timing belt was replaced 30,000 miles ago but it has been 6 years as well. I know thats not a lot of miles on a belt but what about the years ? Should i go by mileage or years more ?
@Motorcarnut
@Motorcarnut Жыл бұрын
7 years is what most manufacturers recommend including Honda. The structural integrity of the belt starts to deteriorate after that time and you’re not too far from that. I’d recommend replacing it for peace of mind.

Bought a used car, with only 6000 miles on the timing belt, problem is, the belt is from 2014. The car was barely driven in that time, but was kept in a closed garage. Manual recommends a change every 4 years for low mileage timing belts. I am scared to drive it to my mechanic, do you think i will be fine making that very short trip? I had no issues driving it 40 minutes to my home but now I am scared of a 10 minute ride.

Don’t worry you’ll be fine to drive it to the mechanic shop. True ever with such low mileage on the belt, age plays a part as well. Replace it asap.

OFTEN you will get NO WARNING that the timing belt is going to fail..They just perish and snap. If it says in the owner's handbook... Change the timing belt every 63,000 Miles OR every 6 Years no matter what the mileage ..THEN CHANGE THE BELT whichever comes first. Once the timing belt is on "Borrowed time" every time you use the car you run the risk of the belt snapping ..The rubber will perish and the strength of the belt will weaken as time passes ..PLUS you don't know how old the belt was when it was fitted..It may have been in a warehouse for a couple of years before it made its way onto your car. I have just changed mine this week ..The old belt had done its six Years. Cost me £280 GBP here in the UK But I have peace of mind now when I am driving my car... Safe is ALWAYS better than sorry. Much cheaper than buying a new engine or a new car.

Thanks for the great write up! The only warning sign is when the manufacturer tells you to replace it at a specific interval, that should be all you need.

Good advice. Mine needs doing (Citroen C1). Any idea what sort of cost a garage should be charging to do it? Citroen Price Servicing website says 'Timing belt kits fitted for £895'. I might be best to go to them?

Hello... Everybody slates Halfords ..But I disagree .. You get good aftercare if anything goes wrong... I would avoid back street garages... They may rip you off and not actually change the belt.. £895 is far too expensive.... I would shop around with reputable garages to look for a better price and make sure they actually change the belt... It is good practice to change the water pump at the same time also... Can I ask when was the last time yours was changed? Kind regards Brian @@benben-my1rk

0:31 imo, if the whining noise is only when the car is moving, check for nails in the tires or a bad wheel bearing before worrying about the timing belt.

@@Motorcarnut Sorry for going off topic. Reason I did was because my 2003 Ford Focus with 201k miles was making the strangest noise, like it was an airplane or whatever. I really have no idea when (if ever) my timing belt was changed so that was my first thought until I realized the droning noise only happened when I was moving. Diagnosis is the most important part of car repair and most often, the problem with a car is fairly minor so I try to cover those bases up front. Lastly: some online resources claim that 2003 Ford Focus with 8th digit "3" have a timing chain (!!), I will check it out on my car when I get some time, which is why I am preparing by watching vids !! :)
