Could I just remove the drive shaft temporarily and still drive the vehicle without 4WD? Or does the drive shaft need to be on?
@wtbm12310 жыл бұрын
Part time four wheel drive yes . full or all wheel prob not.
@PvtPapa10 жыл бұрын
wtbm123 Okay, thanks. So the best bet is still to just put the jack on the transfer case to get the shaft out? There isn't any more bolts to remove first is there.. the transfer case just has some wiggle room?
@wtbm12310 жыл бұрын
PvtPapa If i remember right if it has a skid pad it has to be removed ,and two are also mounts , if no skid plate then remove the two from mount. can not jack but so far ,still very tight getting out.

Before you jacked up transmission, did you disconnect the rear driveshaft? I did this whole job, it was tedious at times, but not particularly difficult. On test drive noticed I had a vibration that started at about 42 mph thru 64. I pulled the front shaft back out thinking there was a problem with the new CV joint but I still have the vibration. I'm wondering if I bent the fwd U-joint on the rear driveshaft jacking the trans. There is a slip joint there (the yoke slips in and out of the trans tail shaft but something is wrong. I changed the trans mount also but don't see how that would be the problem. Any ideas anyone?
@wtbm1234 жыл бұрын
that should not hurt the u joints , but maybe you have one dry or going bad

@@wtbm123 Here's the rest of the story...My S-10 is a ZR/2. It has an aluminum drive shaft. It's is also 2" higher than non-ZR/2 S-10's. While changing the the CV joint on the front drive shaft, I decided to change the transfer case mount while I was in there. (you do have to take it lose and jack up trans case to get front drive shaft out). The transfer case mount has studs at the bottom instead of bolts, the 2 studs also hold the skid plate in driving configuration. I don't know if this is ZR/2 configuration only or all 4x4 S-10 platforms are configured this way. The studs require and extra 5/8" or so lift at the back of the trans case for the studs to clear the cross member to get it out. There was no discernible lifting of the whole vehicle to gain the extra 5/8" but it ever so slightly bent the U-joint ears on the shaft so that it set up a vibration resonance that was not even noticeable until about 40 mph. Buy 45 it was literally vibrating the vehicle apart. The yoke is steel and seems unharmed. Luckily, I found a wreaking yard that had 2 of them. Bought them both. $75 ea. I put it together and drove over 2500 miles across country towing a 3000lb trailer 2 days later. Drives fine but now I have 3-4 rattles that I didn't have before. Such is the life of a DIYer I guess.

@@wtbm123 Slightly bent the aluminum spuds on the driveshaft that hold the U-joints. The U-joints were new when reinstalled.

Propeller Shaft CV Joint Kit . I think i got it at Advance Auto , but most parts stores should be able to get. I think the part number was 932-101 , but you would need to be sure it fits yours . and may need your RPO code . it should be on a big sticker , sometimes in glove box.

Nice vid Terry have you ever come across a prop shaft that has broken on the inside? my tahoe front shaft making some clicking sounds? thanks
@wtbm1239 жыл бұрын
+RICKAFIX I believe it has a regular double cardan joint . Most of those on a chevy are rebuild able because you can change the ball . I just done one on a dodge , it is kinda the same , but like ford where the pin on shaft is the race and it can go bad , but i never videoed it . they are not to hard to do . and each part can be bought separate if needed
@RICKAFIX9 жыл бұрын
+wtbm123 Thanks... but it is just a drive shaft no cardan joint. I had it on the lift running in and out of 4 wheel drive and the noise seemed to be coming from the center of the shaft.
@wtbm1239 жыл бұрын
+RICKAFIX May want to remove it and look it over good as i have ran in to some that had a bad u joint , but the shaft carried the sound and could not tell for sure where it came from , Sometimes it can even carry transfer case or front diff noises to the shaft .
