I was gonna ask you about that drain pan extension, but 9:43 answered my question. :)

What a job that was and you managed to do it without snapping any of the exhaust bolts wow great work. The only other thing you can do is use a fluid extractor either down the dip stick tube or right into the unbolted pan. Also I believe what was preventing you from sliding that pan out was the filter…👍👍👍

I was impressed by that myself. Just looking at exhaust bolts on my cars cause them to snap.

yes, I could extract fluid from the dipstick but unfortunately can't get the filter out that way LOL I don't know the history on this truck but I assume this was the first filter change. I might do a fluid extraction in a few months through the dipstick to change out a few more quarts.

@@WJHandyDad yes I know that was just saying to extract the fluid first to make it easier to deal with the pan less mess and less weight while you are unbolting and taking the pan off.

oh, yeah, that's a good plan. I should have installed a drain plug while I had the pan off, but I was so mad at the whole process that I just wanted to get it finished

07 Silveradob 4.8. Saw another vid where a pry bar was used to gently lever the exhaust pipe by the front of the trans pan down to get that last bit of clearance needed. On mine I was able to very gently lube and massage it in by pry/nurse it past the metal piece holding the cable to trans on driver's side giving just enough clearance to slide pan out and back in.

I didn't try a pry bar, but I did pull on it very hard and there was no wiggle in that exhaust pipe. I was afraid I'd break something if I pulled any harder and also everything I did was splashing fluid all over the place. If I ever do this again I'll pull the cats first!

There’s a video on KZbin showing how to use a ratchet strap to crank the exhaust down enough to do the job. I used that method on my 2014. It still is a pita but doesn’t involve cat removal.

I'll try anything if I have to do this again.

I think most engineers design these vehicles (when it comes to maintenance) that they would be serviced by a professional mechanic with a lift. Having a lift is a real game changer when it comes to DIY maintenance.

maybe I need a go fund me for a lift :)

Depending on what service data you were using, you could have used a pry bar on the exhaust crossover to get a 1/2 inch or so of play on the exhaust system so the pan can slide out. The filter would be creating the obstruction of the pan sliding out without the 1/2 or so of play on the exhaust.

I'll try that if there is a next time for this truck. Thank you.

Wow. I've changed a lot of gender neutral fluid in my day. The Vette, easy. P71 and TC, easy. Dakota, easy. BMW, easy. Your truck is ridiculous and there's no excuse for that design.

yeah this truck was stupidly engineered. 6.2L Chevy... oil filter can't be removed except with a special tool. Transmission pan can't come off without removing cats. I could not find an "accessory" wire anywhere in the driver side dash. I'm not sure I want to find out any more issues with it
