The proper way to fix these torque converters from going out is to tune out the amount of slip, its ridiculous how much they slip from the factory all for comfort. I use hptuners and bluecat software.

I bought an Edge CTS specifically for the transmission tune. Nice firm shifts always stays cool. Was worried I was buying snake oil but it worked.

@@walnutkraken9430 I'm not familiar with what edge does. Are they still slipping the torque converter? Are you able to datalog the tcc?

holley and others make stand alone gearbox controllers for 6le80,they are CANBUS controlled gearboxes,hence why they need programming

Wanna hear something funny?!!! You could have physically swapped the electronics from the 6l80 into the 6l90 and it would have worked!!! The TCM inside is the same!! You could have skipped the programming part. You can check me it you want to. Hopefully this helps someone else.

The 680 had 200000 miles on it I didn't want to deal with a bad pressure switch so we just use the new ECM

@@blindflips4951 they are super simple to rebuild and upgrade, sonnax has a zip kit and transgo make kits aswell. Easiest valve body I have ever rebuilt.

This transmission came from my nephew and didn't cost me anything and it was brand new still had the GM part number on it and be in the 6L 90 I figured that would be a better transmission anyway only cost me $1,300 to have a Driveline built 150 to have it programmed and we're good to go he even installed it didn't charge me nothing for that either

ONLY reason the torque converter fail is do the DUMB trans temp thermostat on the side of the trans and malfunctions and over heats the trans. you NEED to replace it with a" Bar Bell" in-cert. P.S. : If you paid $1300.00 for a drive shaft you got "RIPPED OFF"

My driveshaft only needed to be shortened they quoted me 400 it is Aluminum but then said oh it's bent we can't shorten it have to make a new one from scratch that's why it's 1300 ft was 100% new

What all 5.3 Silverados can the 8l90 swap to?

My truck came with a 6L 80 which is known to fail over torque converter problems I upgraded to the 6L 90 I don't know anything about the 8-speed versions of the Transmissions that came in these trucks only the 6-speed because that is what I had to deal with

No Es and the 8-speeds are 90 series.

@@blindflips4951 Well, a 6L90 is a 6-speed and the 8-speeds are 90 series. Do you mean to say that the 8L90 is an 80 series? If so, that is not something I'm familiar with. Always read that they are 90 series transmissions.

I only researched the 6-speed as that is what I have I know nothing of the 8-speed variations

We use used a piece of plate to move the bolt-holes back about 2 or 3 in I don't remember exact measurement now

How has this transmission held up? Still clear with no warning lights, shift issues, etc? This gives me a TON of confidence leading into my swap. 2015 Suburban 2WD, and I am swapping in a 6.6 gas engine with the 6L90 from a 2022 Silverado 2500. Suburban currently has the 5.3 with 6L80. Do you recall the length of your driveshaft? I have priced local and I am being told a metal driveshaft should work fine, around $500.

We have driven this truck about 4,000 miles with absolutely no issues just perfect no warning lights no issues whatsoever my truck is a Texas edition crew cab so the Driveline is too long to do metal had to do aluminum it was 1300 and I do not remember the length

Worth every penny..I had a small dent in mine from a coon ..I ll never run a bad drive shaft ..tranny rear end smoked drive shaft twisted right off where weld meetS drive shaft ..Yup replace u joints don't run any junk tires keep your truck stock tire size and leave it parked in the garage... and you'll have it for ever

What does it feel like when the torque converter goes out?

The torque converter actually doesn't go out as in stops working it generates metal fragments which destroy the front pump in the transmission which in turn lowers line pressure and clutches start Slippin you'll notice a flutter shudder or just a loss of gear change the fluid when you pull the dipstick will be real dark early warning sign maybe if you hear whining coming from under your vehicle

I was on my way home and my rpm’s were jumping up and back down but when it did it, not the whole time, it felt like it was missing or like I hit the brakes. No check engine light. Thought it might be the TC exploding

That's what happens to the metal from the torque converter messes up the rest of the transmission and it RPMs goes up because that particular clutch pack the computer is asking for is no longer working it will take a transmission replacement or rebuilt to fix the problem

The weird thing is it’s not slipping in any gear. I thought I could pull the transmission, replace the torque converter, and save a few bucks.

Before you tear it apart you need a good scan tool to pull codes and look at it problems with the transmission will not trigger the check engine light but the codes will be there in the BCM or PCM also look at the transmission fluid and see what color it is if it's not bright red there's probably serious damage

Dang, I'm looking to drop a 90 in a 2011 4x4. Just gotta figure out if i can swap the back half of the tcase out with the 6L80's to retain the driveshaft. Like i did in my 04 denali to keep the awd functional and up against a 4l80.

@@daviddobiesz when I research doing this to my truck I watched several videos on KZbin and I have seen some worthy output shaft is removable without disassembling the transmission so it probably should just be an easy output shaft Swap and you could use your two-wheel drive with your four-wheel drive t case
