You need a few pick tools of varying size to force the clip off, The longer the better. A small flat blade screw driver also works but it takes longer

I'm a big guy got it off in under 15mins waited till night to do it now just pick up a new one tomorrow just needed to find the tools that work I preferred a small flathead to take clip off and harness and no damage observed. This switch also effects Transmission( Torque Converter Lockup) and your cruise control use. Check here first it’s cheap and easy and the only problem the most of the time.

@@ausexplosion1550 there are 3 contacts in the brake light switch. One for the brake light, one for the tcc lockup and one for cruise control. The switch has to send signal to all 3 components so that they know when brakes are being applied. If the tcc doesn’t release when brakes are applied it will burn up the converter or stall the vehicle. Same as cruise control, if the brake switch doesn’t send signal to the cruise control, then when you are cruising down the road with cruise control on and you press the brakes the vehicle wouldn’t slow down and stop cruising. The surge problem (rpm hunting) issue I had in my truck wasn’t resolved until I replaced the brake light switch. My tcc would constantly lock and unlock while cruising and make the rpm’s jump up and down. I had a bad contact in the brake light switch.

The video was a great assist. I have a 94 sierra and the switch was replaced by a mechanic when I bought it 2.5 years ago. I read a great forum piece that said if your 3rd light was out but hazards still work then it is the switch. I watched the video and was able to replace the old one in about an hour. It is not easy to get to but if you watch the video and feel up around there you will get the idea. My old one had a c clip and not a spring clip. I put the c clip back on for now but will change to the spring clip soon.

Yea they had some with a round disc like clip that slide over the pedal rod. Too bad I could not get a better shot of how the clip goes on. You have to remove the steering volume, which I Have a few times and the access to that switch is awesome!

Damaged shifter mechanism from pulling too hard when brake interlock solenoid won"t release from PARK has led me to this switch.The switch is easily repaired. Carefully release locks around switch body and one in middle and remove switch cover.Remove the small copper plate and using a pair or crecent wrenches,bend the small plate very gently in direction of pedal shaft wear.Bend just barely past 180 deg.Push wear spot toward pedal shaft.You're just taking up the play.The contacts can be removed for cleaning but looked great after 321k.Put tiny spot of grease each side of copper plate and worked great! Getting clip off was a bitch and wire harness could be 3in longer.Hope this helps!

Every since I sold my 97five years ago I’ve been looking and I found this gem. Prly swap to a 350 one day but for now I can deal with the 4.3.

ya TBI is real easy 4.3 to a v8. Think you can even reuse the same harness just change the ECM Memcal on the truck and then. of course 350 TBI, Distributor knock sensor etc v8 van shroud. I remember Dude who came by had to sell his old truck for a van.. And I was like "yea but its a 305" and he had good point "Atleast its a v8" Yea.. 100% 305 works

People, PLEASE READ. Thanks for the video. I just replaced the switch on my bosses personal 88 GMC 1500. I didn't follow troubleshooting 101. There were no brake lights at all, so I assumed it was the switch. After I went through a couple hours of cussing the GM engineers trying to fit my big self under the dash to replace the switch, there still wasn't any brake lights. I didn't realize there was a 30 amp fuse under the hood for the brake lights and it was blown. Make sure you check ALL the fuses. The third brake light didn't work because both bulbs were blown. So before, you crawl under the dash and attempt this, use a test light or volt meter to verify at different locations.

+Rick P on a newer one there is a fuse under the hood, on a 88-94 its under the dash, The rear brake light circuit is independently fused, i guess for a trailer. I burned up a bunch of these switches from high use, I blame traffic for it, so its nothing new for me lol I replaced it 3 times

The reason why I replaced it the first time was that when I purchased my GMC the brake lights didn't work at anytime.

The round one found on the 2000 Tahoe limited... is No fun. I found that using a long flat screwdriver and pressing from the center outwards. Will cause the Clío the get loose, also trying to pop it upwards helps too. Motorist pulled up next to me on a red light and let me know that I didn’t have brake lights. I was wondering why he was getting so close to me 😂

Video was really helpful for understanding the clip. I didn't have lockpicking tools since I'm not a burglar but I was able to reach over the column with my hand and rotate it to the position needed to just apply enough downward force and it came out.

When I have my hazards on, and I press the brake pedal at the same time, My hazards stay solid and stop flashing. Also when I’m driving, my combination flasher relay buzzes & activates on and off like I have my flashers on even tho I’m driving.

That clip is a booger! I have a 94 Suburban with an aftermarket alarm that is taking up a lot of space under the dash. I'll try the pick since it worked for you. The other thing, I swear I used to hear a relay click when the brake lights came on, but the schematics show no relay on the burb.

Shannon Looper yea, large pick tool is what you need, Small does not work too hot! I did not have one in years past, With some creative wiggling its easy to get it off, I had this switch on and off in 10 minutes, I never did it so fast! When I took the column out a few years ago, WOAH big room! I have about 30 new GM brake light clips, I should sell some. The 94 burban does not have the relay on the firewall?

everything on my truck is starting to fail. my step dad left me with a mess when he passed away. a few months ago. the blower fan went out, breaks light switch failed, the power steering return hose started to leak, and the interior lights wouldn't shut off one day so i just pulled them. besides that i had to put the bed back on and get a new tail light harness. also had to put a side mirror back on. its a pos truck but it drives better than my car because the trans failed on it. i just have bad luck with vehicles.. every year is a struggle.

Get a long pick set and you can work the clip off, You need 2 pics I used like a semi curved one that's on a angle and I think a straight or a 90. Just make sure u dont poke yourself or any wires. Ya I changed this switch like 5x they dont last You can take them apart and clean all the contacts and sometimes they work again

Do you know if the brake light switch controls getting the transmission in and out of park or just simply turns on or off brake lights?? My brake lights wont work on my 98. Fuse and bulbs are good. Only haven't checked relay or switch. Plan to fix this week so any pointers or tips would be great! Any ways to test switch or relay? Taillights, blinkers and hazards work just no brakes on all rear lights.

Your KEY piece of information here is , there is a RELAY in the brake light circuit! It's NOT on the firewall, but I will forgive you for that mistake. It's inside the "relay center", a black plastic housing mounted on the top of the front left wheel well. If if turns out to be my problem, I will send you kisses.

Mine has the relay on the fire wall. Other years maybe had it on the inside. Its not my mistake. You need to Figure out your own wire diagram they changed alot of on these trucks year to year. or with different options

Supposedly you can push the parking brake and if the dash brake light gets brighter, it's not your parking brake switch. It might be the fluid level or pressure differential switches.

No but its just 2 bolts under the dash and 4 at the fire wall optional.. unbolt the steering shaft. The steering column comes right out I usually remove them when I need to work on them, take them apart inside in the AC, fix it, reinstall.

Good video. Be careful if you do "drop the steering column" if you need to reposition yourself and grab ahold of the wheel your truck may jump out of park and slam into a tree with you upside down In the floorboard like mine did. Not the best most complete instructional.

Not really sure what you are saying The switch should clip onto the brake booster push rod. Put the switch on the peg, rotate the switch so its on the brake booster rush rod, then install the clip. The switch moves forward and back just a small amount to activate the lever inside the switch.

Switch man not be adjusted right on the push rod, Also make sure that the clip is locked on right. Some brake light switches I noticed the brass colored piece that slides over stud on the brake pedal is sometimes not bent well. If you bend it so it fights tighter the brake lights are more sensitive. I had a "bad switch" that needed just a bend and it worked again perfect.

The people around here don't even tell you "Your lights don't work!" Because so many drive junk with 2-3 ALL OUT BULBS, Busted out lights. And there are U pull junkyards everywhere to get a replacement!

+thesmoothone Brake light switch is going to kill them all. I think the rear tail lights have a fuse to protect them independently, as in towing a trailer and the trailer shorts out. That. or check the ground by the rear of the frame on the drivers side. Don't RULE out bad circuit boards on the tail lights either. Of course check the bulbs, i bet you did that already

I am having the opposite problem as thesmoothone. My third break light on my 97 Silverado IS working but the tail lights on the bed do not. I have park lights and turn signals but no break lights. The previous owner had a trailer light set up which I've disconnected and gone back with factory hook up but nothing has changed. All fuses and bulbs are good. I'm puzzled since the break light and park light are the same bulb; and since the park light works it's not a connection issue. Any ideas?

Check your tail lamp circuit boards. It's the part where you plug all your light bulbs into. I had to replace mine not to long ago.

could be a bad fitment at the switch or you are using garbage new switches because the quality of everything is poor now. Also check the condition of the harness and connector pins that go into the switch. Also check the brake light relay if your model has one they can do bad But you would need to verify that the circuit works to the relay need a diagram.

It could be worn out. The problem with this switch was not the contacts, the brass contact piece on it was just bent from use. It engaged when it wanted about 1 out of 10 brake applications. Get a AC delco switch they seem to last the longest. Made in Mexico!

Jaime Tale If the light is dim lit, its a ABS code. IF the truck does not have ABS, probably its loosing brake pressure somewhere.

+mike beas If the lights stay lit all the time the switch could be sticking. Unplug the connector at the switch see if the lights turn off. If they do, most likely the switch is bad. I am not sure about a 95+ truck as they changed the wiring but make sure the brake relay is working correctly as well.Test it with battery power and a volt meter.

+Ghetto Wagon thanx o got it fixed. Apparently my luck is bad enough that both circuit boards on the taillights went out at the same time. I changed them both after putting brake lights switch, turn signal switch, and relay. A lot of time and labor for such a easy fix. Thanx for the info though.

Well.. unplug the switch connector if the lights go off most likely its the switch. If they still stay on the relay could be sticking or you have a bad short somewhere

shouldn't that sounds like you may have a broken ground. There are light grounds in the back by the frame behind the right wheel wheel and some grounds in the front by the radiator support on either side Also check the ground straps from the body to the frame Engine to frame engine to body ETC

Unplug the switch connector, if they go off it may, if the switch is the problem that is creating the short. That or the relay could be shorting out. if. You have trailer wiring, check out all that in the back for shorts to ground. Alot have some aftermarket T connector that connects between the chassis harness and the taillight harness. Cheap kits fail

if you have an old chevy may want to check the taillight board, Take both tail lights out, plug the working side into the non working side and visa versa The board is different as in the fitment but the connector fits. If the problem travels side to side you need a new board on the non working side. Or you can just use a test light make a pin, stick it in the connector behind the taillight and make sure the correct wire lights up the test light when the brakes are applied. There is a ground by the frame on the drivers side near the bumper. that can get crappy. Also there is a connector for the taillight harness around the same spot which can get corroded or damaged. Check that out for a good clean pin fitment.

Yea NP chck if you have power and ground from the connector. If you have trailer wires check out that too I don't have trailer wires.

+Legal Zephyr You are saying the brake light switch moves too much? in what direction? side to side or forward and back? If its side to side the clip is not on all the way. Front to back play, the switch could be just crap, mine moved too much like that and that's why it worked when it wanted to Its a weird fitment, if its loose the brake switches contact wont close. What brand switch? ACD? or aftermarket

It is an Autozone brand, "Duralast" i'm pretty sure, and the play is side to side, I put in a washer, it fixed it a bit, but now i have to angle it a certain way for it to work 100% of the time. And I don't know how to do a permanent fix.

Legal Zephyr It could be just a crappy molded switch. Did you have the PITA square clip originally or the round washer looking clip?

I believe it was the round one. Well, at least the end was round. Also, The guy I bought it from gave me a Delco one, should I try putting that one in?

I like the delco one over aftermarket, I always used delco, I only replaced this switch twice and its been USED in Northeast traffic! On n off the brake I think most 94s use the square clip. It locks on to a small groove that you can barely see. When the steering column is out its real easy. Legal Zephyr

I have a 89 c1500 & my brake lights stay on constantly even after I let go of the pedal.. I had to disconnect my battery to keep it from draining it. Could this be the reason ? TIA

unplug the switch. if they still stay on probably have a stuck relay

Another question, there's three bulbs in a taillight. The top bulb (single filament) never lights up...since I have no brake lights, is this the bulb that should be lit? Thank you!

Bottom bulbs on the tailights are for the brakes signals. 1988 wont have a relay on the fire wall think they added that when they put a 3rd brake light later on But maybe its there, Relay on the fire wall by the brake booster @@coeneschamaun1735

I have a 96. Your vid helps. I would add...everything happens after the clip comes off. The switch for the 96...looking at it...one would think "how in the world does this come out?". Believe me this is the worst design for maintenance imaginable. That clip is above the switch and its mount....you might be able to see it with one eye and a light just in the right angle. What a joke. This is what makes the shade tree guy cuss at modern engineering.

Its REALLY easy to get at when i had the steering column out. I was all "Woah look at that Clip access!"

I could see only the bottom of the switch but I used the feel method with the clip. It came off easy but was a bi.ch getting back on (the clip). I also wasn't sure where the unit clipped on to but I moved it around and figured it out.

Blackhawk5656 Weird. Never knew they had a OBD2 code for that. Searched it, Yup. There is a code for it. It triggered the CEL? or was it a hidden code. I see it starts with a "p" so I assume it threw the CEL. I believe the switch when I took it apart had TWO circuits in it, Best I would guess is that maybe one leg is dead? So the lights work but its not sending a signal to the PCM. I dont deal with OBD2 vehicles too much. OBD1 is the best . I think if You had a fancy scan tool like a GM TECH 2 or a high end snap on it would have a table you can check for inputs and the PCM would register if the brake switch is on or off. The tech 2 I used to use had all sorts of cool stuff!

Nahh I just used the brakes alot. NYC traffic for years Now here in moronville, 5 min long stop lights. Current probably burns em up. OEM one was made in Mexico too back in 94

I dont think they were the made in Mexico parts can be hit or miss. Should of seen the pile of ac compressors I sent back. All were made in Mexico none were even worthy of use. Just slapped together wrong clutch. Locked solid. Now nothing is even made in mexico. Not China. USA/ Canada parts were the best can't argue with that. (Now hardly any exists) Japan parts were also very good Australia same. Mexico was just the land used by corporations in the US to exploit Mexican workers paying them less for the same job that used to be in the States all to fit a cost and they profit more. Now they use China for that.

Well with that kinda thinking you probably wont be able to fix it. Let me know when you figure out out a way to light up under the dashboard with about 1/2 inch or less space to work to get the switch on and off
