This is the most complete and concise description and illustration of this switch and it's operation/replacement I have ever seen. After trying to fix this issue many times with no success I had resigned my self to always having to slip my left foot under the brake petal to pull it back on my 1988 Chevy Cheyenne C2500. Great job and Thank You.

I am soooo glad you made this video. My 91 started doing this after I replaced the master cylinder and brake booster (they were both bad) But I could not for the life of me figure out why I needed to pull up the brake pedal. Thanks again

Thanks for this video! I couldn’t get the new switch to work at first, but your tip about the side clip fitting into that notch solved it for me.

I was having this issues and never thought that pulling the pedal or it hanging down on its own or something. I just knew I would pull it up and they would go off but randomly I'd walk my dogs and it would be back on. Never thought about a switch. My truck is dead right now for the 10th time probably because of this.

Ive been vuewing a bunch of videos on brake switch replacement, for 88-98 Chevy pickups. They are showing a much different looking switch, that they say is next to impossible to get to, with some odd, difficult to fasten, retaining clip. It remains to be seen what I actually have on my 88 K1500. (I have no brake lights). I find this odd, because supposedly 88-98 are basically the same.... Anyway, I still need to figure out if there is a relay that I should check, as well as double checking wiring and grounds. Do you have a description of what bulbs light up, for each of the applications (ie, brake, turn signal, emergency flashers, etc)? It's probably been awhile since my vehicle has operated correctly, and I'm not sure anymore how it actually is supposed to.

Your video on replacing the brake light switch was great help to me thank you very much! Also, I think the first switch that you removed may be for the cruise control. To disengage cruise control when you hit the brake.

This is the only video I have found on this switch for 1988/1989 truck. I have an 1988 GMC K1500. I have the same issue, and after watching your video, and looking at my original switch, I see there is an adjustment slider on the switch right at the bottom near the swing arm. What does it do? Could that have just needed to be adjusted instead of replacement? I fiddled with mine (having no true knowledge here...) and like magic the tail light issue went away... maybe it will return... just did it today. Also, similar to a previous post, I used to use a bungee from pedal to seat frame... but stopped working after just a day or two. I resorted to getting battery quick disconnects to disconnect every time I parked. A pain, but no more dead battery. I will bookmark this video and respond on if the slider adjustment works awhile. I have been unable to find documentation of any sort on it.
@duanephillips4082
@duanephillips4082 10 ай бұрын
Adjusting the slider did work for a short time... but it was loose and after only a day slipped back into the "not working" position. Got a new switch and it is much stiffer on the slider and maintains position as set.

Also, the entire switch (old one) kept popping out of the metal slide retainer. I guess 20 years as a farm truck had some wear... LOL

Glad you made this video. I changed the brake switch and my brake lights and tail lights turned off, the problem I have now is that they don’t turn on unless I press on the breaks with the parking lights off. But if press the breaks with the parking lights on they won’t turn on at all. My truck is a 91 OBS Chevy, any suggestions?

It was $1600. I found a guy working out of his back yard shop. It's not perfect. But for a truck I intend to use, it does the job. I may get it repainted in the future. I already messaged up some parts loading fitness equipment and car parts.
