Chevy Silverado Broken Gas Tank Strap Replacement 1999 - 2006

The gas tank strap on my 1999 Chevy Silverado rusted off. The gas tank is falling out from under my truck. I show you how to replace the gas tank strap and get the tank back up where it's supposed to be. Same for Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra & Yukon

My rear strap broke(yes on a full tank) while installing new strap, couldn't get bolt to grab. After reading comments on here i realized it was debris between tank and crossmember that wasnt allowing tank to go all the way up. I dropped spare tire to get access, blew out debris with compressed air. That created enough clearance for the bolt to grab and as it tightened it corrected the bloated tank. Good luck!

I ended up using my jack under a ratchet to get it started, I think the straps might technically be correct, but when you build this in a factory with an empty tank it's just a completely different world.

Soooo, replaced the tank strap on my 2004 sierra and it seemed my strap was a little short so I started to install the longer. After dropping the tank,both straps off, I found that the dirt/rocks that was on top of the tank when strap failed was now in the recess of the tank that swallows the frame crossmember. Clean that out and bolt will tighten properly. If there is a rock in there as was in mine I would imagine it causing tank damage

Dude I have every issue you have. Rust and all. I was getting super angry because the bolt wouldn't reach the hole. So maybe I'll just need to go get a longer bolt.

My rear strap broke off and I had to ratchet strap it and slowly drive it back home and now I’m here. I also have a full tank lol

So what happens if the whole frame perch is rusted out and busts out around the nut and bolt? Now what new frame perch? Can a guy buy those somewhere?

Everything original on gm's are metric. So it was probably a 15mm

The bolt is a 15mm for future people, fits tighter

I'm thinking you could have used a 1/4" spacer above the strap. Which would entail taking it apart again. I can't remember what brand my straps were, I think specter as well though. Didnt have that problem. Good idea with the bolt.

It probably wasn’t your strap. That tank can go up even more just be sure you don’t damage anything up top

Save the old bolt as a conversion piece,... very rare...! Replacement bolt through top of cross tube, with washer and nut, the way it should have been in the first place.

Had both straps break at once tank fall down on me and can't get it to go up again bought threaded rod double butted it cut it at about 4 and a half inches that way I can start pulling the tank straps up easily and just adjust the two nuts to make it flush

Just an update couldn't find any reasonable fuel lines and bought clothe covered diesel fuel hose that holds upwards 1600 PSI instead of buying metal lines which can deteriorate again and were more costly. The 2 lines for my 06 Silverado are fuel and a evaporator line which attaches to the fuel pump.

One of my straps rusted and broke to and I'm afraid of it falling off my truck I tried removeing the bolt yesterday and it seems to have broken in half but the threaded half and the head half of the bolt wont come out it just keeps spinning how would I remove them safely with the gas tank being right there? Also I have a 2001 chevy duramax 2500hd and cant find new bolts for the straps online or at any parts store I have a 26 gallon tank if that helps

look on the back side of the frame about half inch above the head of the bolt theres a hole most of the time you cant see it dig all the dirt out you can and use a 15mm open end wrench on the nut that on the bolt inside the hole
