This 2003 Chevy Silverado is pretty rough. It's also been jacked up figuratively and literally. It has a soft brake pedal, poor brakes, and pulls hard to the lef. We need to redo some DIY repairs and make this thing a little safer.

I had a 35 year long career as a mechanic and I am now retired. I did not know how good I had it all those years. I worked in the SF Bay Area near San Jose CA. I have never seen anywhere that amount of rust and corrosion on any vehicle ever in all those years. The fact that you would even work on those vehicles is amazing to me. Being a mechanic is hard enough but what you deal with gains a whole new level of respect. Thanks for the videos.

@@canadiantoque229 Yeah they're just starting to salt the roads in Alberta. That began maybe 5-10 years ago? The theory is that salt water freezes around -15 to -20, so the entire road turns into a skating rink at that temperature, which happens all the time because Alberta is very dry so the temperature can very easily drop from -5 to -30 in one day, and this will greatly increase the number of car crashes. I can't remember why this is supposed to be a good thing but I trust that governments have our best interests in mind when they come up with these plans. edit: apparently Edmonton started salting roads in 2017.

@@Beardman56 Well, you can do some repairs yourself and cut some corners here and there. I used compression fittings in the past too, for hydraulic and power steering lines. Never on the brakes though. But still, if installed correctly, a compression fitting will work fine as an emergengy repair and is better than driving aroung with a rusted out pressure line.

It's state by state here. It's a unique system we have, the separate states have a huge amount of sovereignty. As the name of the country indicates, we are the United STATES. Feds are only supposed to be involved in issues that cross state lines and affect the citizenry as a whole and they're supposed to let the states do state thing and vehicle safety is one of those things. Emissions are a federal thing though, because smog knows no state lines. In my state you need to have your parking brake work. That exterior rust would also be a fail here.

It actually is an emergency brake because if you have zero regular brakes, you can use the "parking" brake to bring you to a stop - a slow stop since it's only the rear. I believe that's a 1-time use only. Then you have to have it replaced.
@kdawson020279
@kdawson020279 3 жыл бұрын
@@kevinbedard27 Not necessarily. The E-brakes will burn themselves up if you dump them to the floor at speed in an old pickup. The bigger issue is that you have just locked up your rear wheels which is not the most efficient way to stop a car. In a manual, put it in 4th or 3rd, let the clutch out, and hold the brake release lever out with your left hand as you use it like the semi-effective brake it is. In an auto, throw it in autostick if you have it and use it to engine brake. Otherwise, shift to 2 or L, and operate E brake as before. For handbrakes, keep your hand on the button as you lift. If you have ratcheting brakes, apply them incrementally as you engine brake to prevent lockup and uncontrolled skid. If you don't have that kind of room, throw it in the lowest possible gear [never park, you'll break stuff and not slow down much] and apply the brake firmly. Even if you can't get stopped in all situations, knowing how to stop using engine braking and the E brake is useful to increase the survival odds. Sports cars tend to have an aggressive handbrake to facilitate hairpin turns with drift and will generally stop you more effectively than on older vehicles. But, only if they work in the first place. And, to be honest, if you have a 4 wheel brake failure the first thing your vehicle should get is a brake job. If the E brake components are now out of spec, they aren't that pricy to replace as well.

@@WatchWesWork Even when I was a kid I didn't understand the appeal of taking something that works and turning it into something that doesn't, and spending a bunch of money in the process. Try asking these twits what the appeal is and you will rarely get a coherent answer. I've tried asking dozens of people with boom car stereos, jacked-up vehicles, and the wrong sized wheels (both over and undersized) and only one said something that wasn't babble. And that one said he" liked how his truck looked" with very undersized wheels, a few weeks later he put a hole in his oil pan driving down a dirt road that he had driven down a hundred times before.

@@alfredmorency8296 nothing wrong with modifications on anything let alone vehicles. It's a hobby for 1. When done correctly you can INCREASE performance so it's not pointless, regardless of if it worked fine to begin with. I could probably go on and on about this but I do understand what you're saying. I don't think it's all that nonsensical as you make it sound though. Especially when talking about loud car stereos. That's a easy 1... people like music and some like it louder than others. The end. Lol. I do think people can be very wasteful in doing such things though. Also inexperienced installers can definitely create more problems than modifications doing something they aren't familiar with but how else does one learn? Trial and error no?

@nobiggeridiot Someone once told me that Illinois spreads more salt during the Winter than ANY other state. Not sure if that is true or not, but I can believe it! I live North of Chicago, and if there is even a chance that we might have snow, they send the trucks out to spread salt all over the road. So, no matter what, we get salt all over our cars all the time during the Winter. Either it is mixed in with the snow and it gets build up inside the wheel wells, etc., or the salt on the bare ground gets pulverized, and turned into a fine dust that sprays all over everything. Very frustrating! :P
@taketheruben
@taketheruben 4 жыл бұрын
@crazyfvck is right. Salt is terrible on cars. In a lot of places they actually use a salt brine that they put down before it is supposed to snow or ice, which is especially terrible because it turns into a salt dust and gets into every microscopic fleck and chip in your paint. I hate it...

What a nice channel. Quite relaxing watching good quality men do a good quality job. 39:20 when bleeding brakes, I like to run my clear tube up and over something, to keep fluid against the bleeding port, and still let air bubbles escape. It comforts me to know air is not going back against the opening. Plus I can open it up and let my helper pump the brakes slowly without myself having to constantly open and close the bolt.

Wes, Im torn as far as parking breaks. On one hand, I feel you. I hate doing a job and not fixing something I come across. It bugs me to no end. But, I also never used a parking brake on an automatic because too many times they have seized on me overnight, frozen overnight and what not (the freezing is the biggest issue. In fact, in the military it was SOP to never apply them, and if manual, we used chocks and throw it in 2nd, which I do for my manual vehicles) The wheel chock is probably the unsung tool lol (also, I have nice ones at home, but nasty moldy ones for if I ever have to drive out somewhere, and dont want them stolen. Also, curbs make great chocks too lol...Im rambling, and procrastinating from doing work...Battery charge day...yay)

Customer: "I need you to find and fix whatever is making it pull to the left." Mechanic: "Every steering component in the truck is thrashed and needs replaced, and your torsion bars being cranked all the way up is what caused it all. You need to replace your tie rods, upper and lower control arm bushings, upper and lower ball joints, and your CV shafts. You need an alignment after that ... To prevent doing it all again next year, you need a proper lift kit, or drop your tires back down to a 285/75R16 and lower your torsion bars to get your steering geometry in check."
