Hey Pete, thank you for the great video and explanation. This happened to my son and I 2days ago, pulling our 28 ft trailer we pulled into the local motorcycle shop. I went to shove the the shift into park and the arm just flopped and indicator (and trans) stayed in gear. 45 seconds later my son had pulled up your video, jumped out, crawled under and moved the arm into Park on the trans and snapped the cable back on. We made it home thanks to you! Bought the new arm, going out to install it now, just wanted to say thank you sir!

thanks dude! had my '02 silverado at a job site...went to start it and column shift lever just moved freely without shifting the truck. Two fuses were bad including the auto trans fuse in the dash but truck still wouldn't shift after i replaced them. had it towed to my house hoping it was something easy...this weekend i'll check that shift cable lever!

This happened today. was in reverse, went to pull down the arm to drive and NOTHING. Arm moves freely like in your video. Stuck in reverse. I turned it off and it said reverse still but was in neutral. I called a tow truck and had it towed to a transmission shop. I wish I'd seen this video first. Hopefully that's all mine ends up being.

Thank you. That was very clear. I did have a question: Is the new part an improved part or just a nice new non-rusty part? I ask because I have a 1996 GMC Suburban K2500 7.4 liter (454) Gas, and it has the same type of cable with a snap-on cable end to the little ball on the end of the transmission lever just like you showed with yours. However, my truck (California truck so Zero rust anywhere) has a problem of the black cable end randomly slipping off the transmission arm ball and then I am stuck with the cable no longer connected to the transmission. I assumed there was a metal clip that went on Over the installed snap-fit of the cable end, but no. Mine is just like yours. Soooooooooo, is that arm and improved arm and can I just go buy one? Mine looks nearly new as no rust, but the cable just will not stay on! (Truck is 100% stock and has not been messed with). Thanks again for providing this clear and understandable KZbin. VERY helpful!

Do you think this could be the problem for my truck also ? It does that Almost everyday when I try to go from drive to park. Sometimes it only goes as far as reverse and my shifter knob feels exactly how you described it. My shifter won't go past 2nd gear and when it gets loose I usually just put it on second gear and with a little force I make a U-like pull on the knob and it usually gets it into park 9/10 times. What do you think ?
@peetre
@peetre 8 жыл бұрын
I think it is a good chance that it is. It would be quite visible if one was underneath looking at the linkage, while another is moving the selector. Let me know what you find out!
@TexasTopGGGG
@TexasTopGGGG 7 жыл бұрын
So I found out that the medal piece you chaned is put on wrong instead of the little ball facing the transmission it's facing the exhaust. Could that be the reason my transmission shifter feels very loose
@peetre
@peetre 7 жыл бұрын
Well it is possible since flipping it might place the ball in a different area of the shifting pattern. just flip it the other way and see. While you are down there, without hooking the cable to it, see how it feels moving it by hand.

If you mean you can mechanically move the shift are up and down and feel the transmission indentations, then I dont think that you have this problem. This problem gives the feeling of not being connected to anything, which is really what happens.
@Texasman992
@Texasman992 8 жыл бұрын
Then what do you think the problem is if its really loose to shift down ?
@peetre
@peetre 8 жыл бұрын
I assume that it does actually shift and go into the gear you select?.. In which case i would think that there is some type of spring/dog that gives the friction and feel of indentations that hold it in place. I would suspect that it would be part of the transmission and would do some searching on that aspect of it.
