Just wanted to say THANKS!. Since the job of replacing the water pump was mine, I did notch the shroud to clear upper radiator hose bib. I was able to pull the hole assembly straight out, without damaging radiator. My dealership quoted me $700 for this job. I found that on Amazon, they had two AC Delco water pumps. One from China for $36, and one made in Canada, $88. I used the $88 one and it also came with a nice gasket. This video was a great help!! Thank You!

trick-- remove 2 of the 8mm fan to clutch bolts, replace with longer bolts (30 mm). Then remove the other 2 bolts. The longer bolts allow enough clearance between the clutch bolt and the engine while keeping keeping them loosely together---- much easier to re-install.
@WannabeOperator2 жыл бұрын
you dont even need longer bolts. remove all but one and have it loose. You can push clutch back and rotate it some to not have to remove shroud at all. pump comes right out and new one goes right back in

MorFab Industries I went out and used the loaner tool offered by my parts store. Returned because it was damaging the nut. One tip from when I replaced the water pump on my trailblazer: Get new bolts for the water pump. When I was putting the new pump on, one of the bolts sheared off near the tip. Absolute freaking nightmare. Also, the fan clutch & water pump tend to affect each other: if one goes bad, the vibrations will likely make the other one go bad as well. Sadly a new clutch isn't as cheap as a water pump, but if you're already saving money doing it yourself, you might as well put it to good use and replace the clutch as well.

First-class video. The only improvement I suggest is fleshing out the fan and shroud reinstall. You obviously had to jack around with both to get them back in place and the clutch reattached. There was no commentary and your arm and light blocked what little we could see. It appeared to be much more than simply putting it back the way it came out. Regardless, quality product which will help me change mine.

So did you drain all the coolant in the radiator and coolant reservoir? And if you did, once the whole thing is finished you just fill the radiator up until it’s completely full and then the coolant tank to its level? I’m gonna replace my water pump in my 02 trailblazer and I just don’t wanna accidentally not have coolant where it needs to be once I start it up
@MorFabIndustries6 жыл бұрын
Yes fill the radiator first and let it bleed a bit of air out. Run it, let some more air out. Let it cool, fill the rad to full and then fill the res. I usually overfill the res just a bit to make up for any possible air pockets.

Nice video, I only wish you specified what tools, wrench/socket sizes you needed to do the job either on a list or during the video as you went through. I prefer to have everything laid out prior to starting a project rather than fumbling about as I go figuring it out on the fly. Also, the "Clap Twice" method of belt installation didn't work for me even after multiple attempts. It did however get me into hot water with the wife as all the lights in the house kept turning on and off from the clapping. In the end, I did it manually using the diagram on the fan shroud. =) Lastly, I personally don't own an air hammer so I had to rent the tool from AutoZone. Gotta remember, many of us DIY guys don't have all those cool gizmo's that you wrenches do who do this for a living have. Your video was very helpful, thanks for putting it together.

Why are you removing fan from clutch? Objective , getting clearance so shroud will clear upper radiator neck.This is necessary to remove fan, clutch, and shroud all at the same time. This be easier if you remove 2 of the 4 bolts that hold the fan to clutch. Go to autozone and get 2 of the same bolts but an inch longer. Just finger tight, put longer bots in(of course opposite of each other). Remove the other 2 short bolts. So what's the effect? This enables you to push the clutch away from fan blade up to an inch. This creates clearance for shroud to clear upper radiator neck by leaving fan and clutch together. Holding on to fan blade(which is still bolted to clutch) and shroud makes it easier to remove all well as putting back in the reverse order. A job they say take 4 hours can be done in 2. Removing all 4 bolts that hold fan to clutch is retarded and time consuming as well as risking dropping clutch right into radiator causing real unnecessary damage.
@MorFabIndustries5 жыл бұрын
Everyone has their own way of doing things. I regularly replace these in this exact way and in the 20 years I have been working on cars I have never damaged a Rad. Your way is most def effective but I bet i can do the job faster without having to run out and get bolts.
@thomashiggins15555 жыл бұрын
I mention the bolts for the novice. Was not including myself lol I had to say something only because you can save yourself so much time leaving fan attached to clutch. If you don't need to go to autozone. Then give it a try. 3/4 to 1" is all you need and fan and clutch come out together holding with one hand and the shroud with other hand. The best part putting it all back is quick and easy. doing it this way savves you 2 hours. all over to bolts allowing fan to be moved away from clutch so shroud can clear the upper neck of radiator. I say this to you out of kindness and hope you give it a try sometime. Respectfully wishing you all the best. Tom( 38 years, my specialty is I am an expert troubleshooter).

you dont gotta remove the shroud or anything. you undo clutch fan from water pump. loosen the bolts holding clutch to back of the fan and you can push the clutch towards the radiator without hitting it and then have enough room to get water pump out. no hoses undone, fan shroud still mounted. literally unbolt the fan and then loosen clutch bolts and can get pump out. already did it. You taking the bolts off the fan blade to get the shroud out would have allowed you to leave it and get water pump out lol. Its also kinda late to say youre gonna start the engine and make sure fan isnt hitting anything. itd be way too late at that point if it was hitting something. good content overall though. and you used dex cool LOL. Shockingly enough Ive watched some youtubers pour green coolant in these same engines. When it literallys says dex cool on rad cap

Am I the only one that watched this video with hopes that I'd get some help on how the hell to break the fan nut loose. I swear I said every cuss word imaginable at least 10 times and made some new ones to the book. I finally got it to break loose after several hours of "fuck it I'll do this shit later" I ended up having no luck with every tool I have well its 2 am and I finally got it loose using a pipe wrench on the fan nut and a pair of vice grips on one of the 1/2(13mm) nuts on the pulley and a 6 foot cheater pipe on one side of the vise grips turning pipe wrench counter clockwise and the hood of my trailblazer to stabilize vise grip\cheater pipe. Good video but unlike this video and the rest I watched before doing this job I don't have the necessary special tools for the removal of the fan shaft. Thanks for the video though. Notched under the neck of radiator with my oscillating tool fan shroud and fan came out with ease didn't have to pry pulley off or fan luckily they both fell right off as soon as both sets of bolts were removed. Not a job for an average guy with even the most common and even uncommon tools handy even with some mechanical enginuity this was pretty damn tough. Preciate your help though brother good looking out
