Chevy Truck: Active Grille Shutter

In this video I fix a customers 2017 Chevy 1500 with the big 5.3 that had a code stored in it for "loss of communication with a device on the LIN bus" U1510. Lucky for us there is only one device on the LIN bus in the ECM and that is the active grille shutter. Easy peasy!

Just to clear some stuff up here is the description and operation of the active grille shutter right from GM service data: *DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION > ACTIVE GRILLE AIR SHUTTER DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION* The active grille air shutter system closes shutters in the front grille to enhance vehicle aerodynamics in driving situations where cooling and A/C loads are relatively low and high levels of front end airflow are not required. If high levels of airflow are required the active grille air shutter system will open one or both shutters. The control signal from the engine control module, ignition and ground circuits enable the active grille air shutter actuators to operate. If the conditions for opening the shutters are reached the engine control module commands the active grille air shutter actuators to open one or both shutters. The dual active grille air shutter system consists of two aero shutter mechanisms located in the front grille for controlling the amount of air entering the engine compartment. It includes three wires; ground, power and a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) Bus serial data circuit from the engine control module to the shutter actuator. The engine control module determines shutter state based on various vehicle conditions such as vehicle speed, coolant temperature, fan state, refrigerant system pressure, A/C compressor state and ambient temperature. The engine control module has the ability to command each shutter individually to the open or closed positions through communications on the LIN Bus. The actuators are powered by an ignition circuit that is active when the key is in the RUN position. The vehicle may have to be driven for up to 13 minutes at speeds greater than 41 km/h (25 mph) before a shutter begins to move. If low ambient temperature is detected, the shutters will remain in the closed position.

airo what,,its a 4.5t truck, shaped like a box..im sure wind tunnel time created this..we use cardboard,,never fails..well, seeing tech is advancing,,in the next 6 months,,they,ll fix themselves..im in a 4x4 club,in aus..registered,not cowboy,,, all these new 4x4rs, out in the simpson desert, 1 sensor shts,,you die..its like death valley, but 400 times bigger..we carry fuel for at least 600 miles,, seems like all modern cars, everything shts around them, too much tech.. great work, vids, keep em coming..

Back in my day an active grille air shutter was the process of people sticking part of a cut up K-mart box in front of the radiator and then removing the cardboard at the appropriate temp. 🙂

EXACTLY! I live in NE Tennessee and I also drive a 1990 S10 Pickup. On the cold 20-30f mornings, I'll grab a long cardboard cut-out and lay it horizontal against the radiator. The fan will suck it and hold it against the core support and that'll help lessen airflow. Super useful for the older fan clutches!

That was fun. I did one of those yesterday - almost put the new one on without the temp sensor. There's a little circuit board on the motor for this thing, full of corrosion. Not to worry - GM is saving their electrical sh*t that doesn't corrode for their upcoming EV's. Those will be trouble free.

I like the way Trane used active shutters on old commercial condensing units, but it wasn't for aerodynamics, lol. They had shutters to control head pressure for cold weather operation (many large buildings need cooling in certain areas like communication rooms in the winter). The shutters were operated by a pneumatic cylinder pressurized by refrigerant from the discharge side of the compressor. So in cool weather the reduced refrigerant pressure allowed the cylinder to close the shutters to maintain a reasonable pressure. No damn sensors, no electric motors, no computers, just pure mechanical reliability. I just thought someone might find that interesting.

Back in the day, I had a 1974 Wartburg Knight. It had a grill shutter you could open/close in really cold weather to speed engine warmup. You pushed/pulled a little handle under the dash and a thin solid cable was connected to the grill.

You can put an 8mm socket on the white plastic fasteners that hold the fender trim piece. The socket will squeeze the tabs and the trim will pop free. I learned that trick from an old timer in a bodyshop.

The bumper filler is easier to release bottom tabs by reaching up from below behind the bumper and pull down on the tabs. I had a 39 Packard with active grille shutters. They had a thermal spring in the top of the radiator with a rod going to shutter. The car was 40 years old when I got it and it still worked great. Now we need a computer to do it , Progress?

As a 23 year GM body technician, I can commiserate watching you take that apart. I get furious at the way things are put together now. I honestly can’t believe you got those flare clips out just by pulling and not have them break, I always squeeze them from behind. One thing that could have saved you a little aggravation is we leave the cover attached to the grille and save all those clips aggravation

I worked on Autocar trucks in the 70s and they had temp operated radiator shutters..You could hear the change in air flow when they opened, and they made for a cool looking grill.

Eric you are correct. At 23:15 you say they go together easier than they come apart because of the assemblers standing on the line. Yes! I did that for a year at the oldsmobile factory 50 years ago. We made a car every 40 seconds, 3 cars every 2 minutes. No robots to speed the process. We laughed at all the items we assembled (most) that clearly were going to be _hard_ to remove for repair. That sticky tape was only to help assembly. The two donger (25:07) is a strap independent of the fender guard. It holds the end of the bumper guard to the fender.

I suspect the difficulty with all the different fasteners might have something to do with the Collision Tests. A different thing - a memory actually - is that our second hand vehicle in my childhood had an actual roller blind in front of the heat exchanger. There was a cable brought to the cabin for controlling the height of the blind. If you wanted to adjust it, you had to slow down. Otherwise the blind was immobilized by the air pressure. By the way, it also had a manual crank for starting, as the 6 V battery was likely not to have enough muscle to turn over during the colder weather (more viscous oil). Those were the days, when everything was better and simpler, you know....

This is actually a system that goes a long ways back. 80’s and 90’s big trucks like freight liners and western stars, ford LTL 9000’s ran the same louvers back then. But they decided to put more electrics into it now, with yet more sensors for sensors. lol. Cheers from Central Canada. 🎉🎉

Had this happen to me on my 18 Silverado. Driving in heavy rain storm, next day shutter failed. Split open bad motor and water dripped out. You could see where the circuit fried. I did apply sealant to seam on new motor. Couldn’t find motor only for purchase. Had to replace the whole shutter say.

Check out the fuel pump control module located above the spare tire. No sealant on a tin boxes seams. It'll make you shake your head for sure with all the dirt and water that gets to it and in it.

Active Grille Shutters are the bane of my existence. I will say, they come out a lot easier when the vehicle has been in a heavy front-end impact! ;) I used to think I was quite mechanically inclined. Then I started doing diagnostics for bodyshops. I've watched an experienced body tech strip the entire front end off one of these trucks in a matter of minutes, and it's absolutely humbling. I've learned to bring donuts, politely request what I need access to, and stay out of the way.

I have fixed plenty of laptop computers - they give you plenty of mini heart attack moments when separating plastic casings. Some are a lot louder than you would think. As well as looking for screws in weird places, plus the plastic clips are a lot smaller and easier to break and you can’t just go to a store and buy parts to replace them apart from the “mothership”.

Brother you just helped me so much on my 2018 Acadia. I'm having the same issue and no mechanic wants to touch it. I'm fine with basic stuff like coils plugs etc etc. But electronics wise I go as far as Audio installs etc. Never dealt with any electrical issues .

I remember the day Volvo had roll-up shades that worked via a cable in the cab. My, my, we've come a long way. Listened to a podcast today about a 2017 Subaru that had similar issue - shades stopped working. Shut down several systems - lane departure, pre-emptive braking and the auto idle stop system - and lit the dash up like a Christmas tree. One step forward and two in reverse. Another great video. @@danielj.schneider5162 it is a Mac tools 1/4 ratchet. They have a newer style with more aggressive offset on the head, but it's no where near as reliable as the one he was using

Watching you take off that plastic on the bumper takes me back to they days when I worked at Dell back in late 90's and the Aughts. The Latitude laptop with a purple back had 120 screws in it just to tear it down. 50 of them were on the back purple piece cause during R&D ever time a crack showed up they just put a new screw.

Back in the good old days you stuck a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator if you wanted better heat in the winter. Guess that's considered an "inactive grill shutter." Watching you take that grill apart reminds me of the time I replaced the doghouse on my 71 El Camino. Replaced the hood, grill, both fenders, and bumper. It was a lot simpler than that repair. Nowadays, I take my 2014 Yukon XL to a shop to get my headlights replaced. It's probably a one hour job... if you are a rocket surgeon.

Now I know where the guy that designed the Honda Goldwing air filter replacement system went to. You have to take about half the bike apart to change the air filter. with practice you can get it down to 5 hours. The best part is they decided to use 4 different size fasteners and multiple plastic pins.

@nighthawkj3096 Yeah they did. Some of the design is straight from Audi models of that time. Those parts seem designed to be as failure prone and difficult to work on as possible. Watch a video of a blower motor replacement in one. It will blow your mind. The rest of the car is bulletproof.

A lot of those bumper trims/covers seem to be designed for easy assembly on the line, but on the basis that, if you're taking them back off, it's for crash repairs, so it doesn't matter if you have to break them, because you'll be fitting a new one.

Thankfully the headlights are not halogen! Changing one on a 2012 GMC 3500 was a learning curve! Good one Mr. O. Old or new that shutter assembly was REAL flimsy! I was used to the old International "Rxx series that used steel and hydraulics. Times change.

The build of GM trucks is choreographed on the line to keep the line moving. I can attest to this as I worked at the GM plant in Fremont California back in the middle 70s to 80s on GM passenger line.

NIce, a 28 minute repair video. 24 minutes of getting to the part and 4 min to replace part, including the uh oh, forgot the ambient temp sensor. They sure don't make 'em like the used to!!! And, for the most part, that is a great thing!!! Cars today achieve shit cars back when could only dream of (400+ HP and 30MPG, 200k on the odometer and still running, starts when cold every time no need to tell someone to pump the gas twice then start, etc....) BUT.... shit like this BS to take stuff apart is a total engineering fail. Then again, when you engineer to save on assembly costs, this is what you end up with.

And to think we used to think it was ridiculous back in the late 1960's when you had to loosen an engine mount on a Chevy 327 V8 and lift the engine up three inches with a floor jack to take out the spark plugs. My how things have changed! 😂

I feel your pain. I had a '15 Sierra 1500 I converted from halogen headlights to HID. To do that, I had to do all this same stuff to get the headlight housings off. It looks very similar, but to pull that bottom trim piece, my instructions said to attack those "tabs" from the BACK side of the bumper.

My 2018 equinox have this grille shutter. It really helps warm up the engine faster in cold weather.

My 2019 Equinox has it too. I find it odd that the heat blows so cool if idling. I would think it would close the shutter while idling to keep the engine bay warmer. Blows really hot while driving, but if parked for a bit cols down considerably.
