It makes it harder to work on when you're laying on your back, looking up, especially with jacks in my way. I want to replace the timing chain, cam and gears. I have to remove the water pump and timing cover. With the engine out, everything is in easy access. Also, the oil pan gasket is riveted to the block, you have to chisel or grind the rivets off to get the gasket off, it's much harder when you're upside down, and I don't have anyone to help me. @@ricktaylor3748 first off, the oil pan gasket is not riveted to the block. It’s riveted to the oil pan. And if you’re doing all that extra work, pulling the engine makes sense. I have an 00' Silverado 5.3 4x4 and on cold starts it says low oil pressure and then when it warms up it gets to the right oil pressure. I replaced the oil pressure sensor and it still does it and the readings are right. My guess is it's the oil pickup tube o-ring. What are your thoughts?
@MattsShop4 ай бұрын
Probably the oil pressure o-ring. They are contracted cold and heat up the expand then seal well.
@poysunivey4 ай бұрын
It’s the o-ring. Have you noticed that it only happens if you let it sit a day or two? If you start it everyday it will still build slowly, but you don’t get the warning? It’s basically the pickup losing prime due to the o-ring not sealing well. The oil pump has to reprime itself and it takes a couple seconds to pull oil back up to the pump and then you have pressure.
@buzztrucker2 ай бұрын
@poysunivey yes that's exactly what's happening. When its on a cold morning start after a couple of days I get low oil pressure for just like 15 seconds then I get 40 to 60 psi reading. Then oil pressure is fine with no warning light on warm start or even a cold start with 24 hrs of driving. I'll replace the o-ring but I have 4x4 and not looking forward to it.

Don’t forget the gauges in these trucks are known to go bad. Don’t always trust the gauge to be accurate before you go putting a pick up tube o-ring in. I’d also suggest just replacing the whole pickup tube if there’s any chance the previous owner did extend oil change intervals.

@@MattsShop It’s best to verify. Gauge fix or pressure sender is Waaaaay easier than a pickup tube o-ring. If you got suspected low pressure verify it with an actual gauge. After i actually drive a few miles it will go all the way to zero at stop lights and stays around 20 when driving. Taking it out of drive into neutral will bring it up enough to keep the oil light from coming on, but once i've driven a little further, the only thing i can do to keep the pressure up is give it a little gas at the lights.
