Update, still loving the Volt three years later at 55,000 miles, with no noticeable battery loss, though I've been careful to never fully discharge, and try to limit charging to 100% as much as possible.

Great video. Thank you! I took possession of my 2017 Chevy Volt in late August 2016, and to date have put in less than $20 of gas. I live in a cold climate area (Connecticut), so the engine runs any time the outside temperature is 30 degrees Fahrenheit or less or until the car is warmed up. My commute is less than 10 miles, so most days I don't use gasoline at all. Having come from driving a Prius for well over 15 years, I can say that the Chevy Volt is a great car. I look forward to hearing about others' experiences with this car.
@TheMrMobile7 жыл бұрын
Nice; thanks for sharing your own Volt experience!
@floobertuber5 жыл бұрын
I think it's important to note, if you want, you can set your car to stay off the dino juice until a lower-than-30F temperature. Not sure what it is in the 2016, but in my 2014 Volt it was settable (see your environmental config settings) to not kick in until 16F. I recently traded that car for a 2019 Volt LT and was astonished to see it can now be set to -13F! That's great for people in cold places, who never wish to use gas, and have a fairly short commute. Personally I'm not that gas-averse, but it's nice to have the option! You can always warm the engine up (and get a little 'free' cabin heat, thereby) if you switch to "hold" mode, too.

Good, professionally shot and edited, video, my friend. One of the few points about the Volt you missed was the quiet and serene driving experience that is intoxicating. You can actually hear subtle nuances in your music whilst cruising down the highway. The other point is the much lower maintenance required. I am one of those fanatical Volt owners (2013), currently averaging over 140 MPG, with two oil changes and 4 tire rotations for maintenance over 50k of trouble free miles. Did I mention 5-star safety, 10 airbags, and much higher than average reliability? It is the car of the future, available now. BTW, good luck getting your M3 by 2020.

Great presence and speaking style, Michael. You may well be the most accomplished and effective professional speaker on youtube. The writing is top tier, as well. A clarification may be in order for "Chevy says the Volt will give you up to 53 miles...." The EPA is the one saying 53 miles electric range is estimated on the combined city/highway cycle. An "up to" electric miles number could be 80 miles or 40 miles depending on the driver and a host of environmental factors. And as I may have written previously, the Hold Mode does not keep the battery "at or close to full." It keeps the battery near the level existing when Hold is selected. These 2 points are minor tweaks to a great review which captures the Volt's real-world usefulness. And it is a scrupulously fair review, an example being the rebooting entertainment system on the tester, which other reviewers might have used to advance a personal view of Volt's or GM's shortcomings.

This is such an Incredible drive concept, and you just cannot beat it for the unlimited range that is available thtough a quick, convenient fill up at any gast station. I can't wait to see this system in a compact SUV (like my beloved 2014 Buick Encore) - because that's when it will be time for me to trade in my Encore! Until then, I am incredibly impressed with the 30.5 Average MPG I've racked up in over 45,000 miles of driiving in my 2014 AWD Buick Encore - truly one of the Best and Most FUN to Drive cars I've ever owned! The only way to make it better is with a Volt drive system - oh, and don't forget an AWD version, as I'd never go back to FWD after experienceing the great handling and incredible traction of the AWD Buick Encore - especilly in the Upstate NY Snow Season! Keep the Great Cars Coming GM!

Yes a great production of how the Volt works and a better understanding of it. I makes the Chevy Volt not so 'invisible' once you have seen this well explained video. I also have just heard that the maintenance on the Volt is incredibly low, some owners just have to change the oil in the car every 2 years, that is it, no other repairs or costs for them! Thanks for the information, got me thinking more towards the Volt now. Just need to know how it handles in the winter driving conditions here in Canada!?

I bought a 2017 Volt a few months ago and it is fantastic. It is cool to watch one of my favorite KZbin personalities review my car. It is interesting how even in 4 years the charging infrastructure has changed. Although there are quite a few level 2 chargers around, almost all of the new chargers that are being built, and there are a lot of them, are CCS DC Fast chargers that are not compatible with cars like the Volt. As great as it is, I can understand why GM stopped making the Volt. We are inching closer to charging infrastructure and EVs that can make long trip without much charging hassle.

Good review, Michael. A slight correction... the Hold function doesn't keep the traction battery "at or near full." It keeps the battery at or near the level existing at the time you select Hold Mode. This function, standard on Volts since the 2013 model year, is very useful for maximizing overall efficiency.

Peeps obviously love your reviews. I love this one. I just bought the car that you're driving here. Giants Blue, but LT instead of Premier. I am old school, and know how to park, stay in my lane, and not cut anyone off, on my own. But others do not. So it's all good. I am trading in my 2014 Volt for a 2017. I have not had a car that was more fun than this to own in 40+ years of driving. The car looks great, and is a lot of fun to drive. It's American made. Great for the environment, and oh yes, it saves me a ton of money. I'm sad that this is the last year Chevy's making them, but I plan to upgrade to other used Volts before they are all gone. Hoping they come out with something more like this than the Bolt. Think Corvette styling rather than stubby, boxy, go for volume, half car looking things. But thanks for the technology, and the smooth and quiet ride.

Thanks for the fine video. Well done. That's my 2017 Volt, except mine is the LT not the Premium.When I bought it 7 months ago, it was 2 years old with 17k miles on it, for $18k. Best car that I have ever owned. I drive 3k-4k miles per month for business in NJ. On average, I don't have to buy 80-90 gallons of gas per month. With no range anxiety at all. I plan to own a 2018 and 2019 as I trade up after loading up the miles on my present car. My charge situation is very good. I have a 220v outlet at my driveway, and solar panels on the roof of my house to charge it cheaply.

Pretty good review. I bought a used 2012 Volt Premium that was well optioned and in great shape. I think many reviewers were unrealistically hard on the Volt. It’s not perfect but the more I drive it the more I like it. If it were only a little longer and had more back seat headroom. I’m 6’5” and have ample head room in front. Also, there are several good apps for charging stations. I use Volta primarily.

Great review Michael! It's very interesting how they combined gas power and electric power, along with all the almost futuristic gadgetry as well. The logistics are amazing for a good amount of people it seems. This seems like a less expensive, less futuristic (but still includes cool newer toys and tricks) Tesla, and that's not a bad thing at all. Also kudos for reviewing a car, most tech KZbinrs just stick with tech, but you have decided to look at all things involving tech.

"hold" doesn't keep the charge "at or close to full" - when engaged, it holds the battery charge at whatever level it is currently at. This allows you to choose to use the engine where it will be a bit better than battery power, like on freeway driving, then you can switch back to battery when it will be more efficient - when you're off the freeway on surface roads, in the city or in a neighborhood.

Exactly, you have hit this right on the head. So, I drove a Tesla Model S , a Ford Fusion, and a Toyta Prius Prime. Volt’s back seat will be a bit tight. I don’t ride in the back seat. I can count the number of times there have been passengers in the back seat of my diesel Passat… Not often. Tesla is way to much,the Fusion was just OK, The Toyota is way to weird. The Volt just seems just right. The Bolt will be great when there are more public chargers in more small towns and rest stops. Thanks for a well done video.

Nice review from @theMrMobile. I own the 2017 Volt in the lower cost LT trim, with the comfort package. As sweet a spot as exists, in my opinion, for this car. I bought it out of state, drove it home, a couple of 120-mile round trips to a nearby city, and to work everyday. My first tank of gas lasted 3200 miles and a couple of months. Without a doubt, anyone looking for a compact car sporting some impressive drivetrain technology should give the Gen2 Volt a test drive.

When a Chevrolet Volt is older than around six years old, the 12 volt battery will need replacement. This smaller battery is for the accessory electronics like lights and other non propelling electronics. This battery is located in the trunk space. The battery cost around $300. If you don’t charge it, you won’t be able to drive it.

"UP TO" 53 miles. Actually, it's up to about 77 miles on the Gen 2 Volt. Many efficient drivers beat the EPA numbers by anywhere from 10% to more than 30% on every car they own, whether a Volvo, VW or Volt. Over 40 years ago, on one of the very few cars I bought new, I put 129,000 miles on it before needing to replace the brakes. Therein lies the secret. Minimizing use of friction braking. Regen is great; I've had it on nine cars. But it is way less than 100% efficient at turning kinetic energy into stored electricity. Many folks think using the steering wheel paddle aggressive regen on the Gen2 Volt is more efficient than D, L or conservative brake pedal use. It is not. In fact, the driver has wasted energy getting to the point of needing to use the paddle.

Hopefully the Volt has adaptive cruise control down to 0 mph / kph. Having the Android Auto is a great. Such additions alone add a significant value to the car. Finally, good job properly stating "regenerative" braking vs. "friction" braking. Its nice to see non-science folks state physics concepts properly. Blue Volts are always the nicest looking ones. I say that as a guy who leased a 2012 (Topaz Blue Metallic) and has subsequently owned two black ones (a 2014 and a 2019). Both that blue, and the Kinetic Blue, as well as the Pacific Blue they made the 2019's in, are all gorgeous shades of blue.
