I got one you may never have heard before; I bought a used 2011 Honda Accord and took it to an independent mechanic who did all the brakes with me helping. A month later, I got a coupon for an oil change at a Honda Dealer in Milwaukee and took it in for a cheap oil change. They sent out a 'representative' (20 something blond chick) who told me I needed brakes, that the pads were worn and it wouldn't be safe to drive because the thinness of the pads will soon fail and the drive will feel mushy. I blew her off, knowing the brakes were fine but when driving away found that the drive did feell mushy, so i pulled over and called my buddy and he said; 'check your tire inflation', I did and all my tires were set to 14 lbs. The dealer deflated all the tires down over 50% in order to scam me into purchasing a $1200 brake job that wasn't needed. I drove back to the dealer and spoke to the service manager who not only refused to rack-up the vehicle to show me the worn pads, but also accused me of letting the air out of my tires. I reported them to Honda USA and got no response.

The "you need new brakes" scam is an old one but I've not heard of the "drive will fee mushy / let air out of the tires" twist. I'm lucky. We have a truly great set of independent garages here. If they say your brakes need attention it's 100% guaranteed they do, and they'll do only what needs doing and at a fair price. The dealership where we buy our cars from also has an honest shop (strange but true). But I go to the independent place for other reasons as well.

If everyone just walked out when the BS started, the car dealership business would change overnight. That is in addition to the fact that Hyundai/Kia dealerships are the worst, and I mean the absolute worst dealerships in most cities, mine included. They prey on the lower income and less educated to fleece them with ridiculous monthly payments where they bury the fact they are charging people way above MSRP. They are like a festering plague around here...

I went to my local Ford deal last summer to price out a 2023/24 ecoboost premium Mustang. We have been buying 2 cars every 5 years since 1997 when we got married. He dad was a ford factory retiree so we got Z-plan price. He passed in 2003 and her mom passed in 2018, so we lost that. I joined the DAV as a life member in 2017, so we had the X-plan to fall back on. The price difference is 2% vs the 4% for z-plan. They were not honoring X-plan because they wanted to up charge the car even though I was ordering one from the factory and those plans don't allow them to deviate from the plan price (aside from the dealer options). I didn't buy a new Mustang last summer and they missed out on a used 2017 in excellent condition with only 24K miles.

When I bought my Silverado High Country in 2019 the dealer came back with the 'out the door price' and it had all these extra charges. When I asked what the extra charges are for I was told it was for the spray-in bedliner and step rails. That truck was equipped with those from the factory. It was even listed on the window sticker. The best one that cracks me up is the glass etching, theft deterrent stickers, DataDOT DNA packages they upcharge $300-$500 that the dealer buys in bulk for probably $8-$10. Any dealer I buy from I specifically tell them, no add on's, no upcharge items, don't put your dealer sticker on my car, if there's already one on it, take it off, and don't scratch my paint.

Glass etching is probably the only thing that works. To sell on a car all the windows have to be replaced. That is expensive and difficult to do. Some of the glass has a long order time. Try and sell with different numbers on the window as the car and the fact it is stolen is very obvious.

I told them take the $900 and the stickers off or I walk. The finance guy leaves and the "manager" comes back in and says they will take the $900 off but they couldn't remove the stickers without damage. The auction scam might be something new in car auctions, but its been going on for years. I went to an auction years ago for a tech company that went out of business. At one point, they were auctioning off 2 year old IBM laptop computers. When the bidding slowed a couple times, a guy in the back always bid it up to keep the auction going. I had gotten there early, and saw the guy who was bidding it up in the office where the auctioneers were before the auction. The guy worked for them, and was a ringer. He was there to bid up items. Those 2 year old laptops sold for 3 times what a better, brand new laptop went for at Best Buy. I've also heard about it at real estate auctions, where the bank that holds the mortgage sends representatives to bid up the bidding to make sure that if it sells, it sells for a price advantageous to the bank. Now, the catalytic converter etching on an electric vehicle? That's a new one.

It was easy to see the ring leaders ( the people working for the auction that stir up bids in the crowd ) putting up there hands like they got a bid from a customer and there was no bid made. You could watch the vehicle get bid up hundreds or thousands of dollars more. Often it was vehicles of one or two sellers that the false bids were happening. Wreaked of bribes.

My friend’s elderly father was ripped off by a Ford dealership that he had worked for many years earlier. They were his “friends”. He leased a barebones 2020 Ford Fusion for 3 years/36,000 miles. He paid for an extended powertrain warranty to 100,000 miles, paint protection, fabric protection and 5 years of service. By the time he was done he paid about $10,000 more for this vehicle than he should have. This was back in the days where deep discounts were the norm. End of story, he drove the car home and died that night. His son returned the car with under 50 miles on it.

The other in lane scam I seen for years, is another dealer friend bidding up his dealer buddy's vehicle, trying to get other bidders involved. if this person got caught as the high bidder and could not get out in time, His buddy selling the car would either say no sale or put it on an if. the dealer selling the vehicle would say no sale if he knew for sure his buddy was the high bid, if he didn't know for sure he would if the sale, then when he found out it was his buddy, he would just decline the sale. There are all kinds of scams going on, you definitely need to know the game, or else you'll go out of business fast. You need to know what the vehicle is worth and what you can sell it for and know your high bid and stop when it gets there and move on.

That means the folks who invest their earnings ended up with it from the businesses they invested in instead of spending. Now that trillion is going into surprise car loans since those who had COVID bucks used it for downs on cars they could not afford. Now they are back to the subprime loans. Long way to say that the used car industry is doing well, but prices are still up.

@aj383 whike far to much to dig into in a response, Subprime lending has been around since leanding started thousands of year ago. The issue is not subprime but how high the default rate gets as it is connected to the collateral. Plus a bunch more boring stuff.

That's a Cadillac Converter. You stick it on your car and it turns it into a Cadillac. @4:00... When I worked at the Nissan dealer, my service writer got upset at me when I refused to do a P/S flush on a car with electric steering.

A couple of years ago, I noticed a dealership that added running boards and bedliner to their dealer addendums even though those were showing on the window sticker as installed by factory so the price of those were already factored into the MSRP lol. I called them out on it and the salesperson responded by saying “great catch!” He said they couldn’t remove them from the addendums fees. Why would I pay twice for the same items 🤦‍♂️ Needless to say I didn’t buy a vehicle from them.

Last year I was looking for a used Ford Ranger and found the exact one I wanted. Less than 2 years old for the price that I wanted. Problem was the dealer was 500 miles away. I called Fullerton Ford and made an offer which they accepted. I did the credit app online and then spoke with a salesman. He asked me if I wanted the door edge seal and the ceramic sealer. I didn’t want either one of those things. I took a train down, wondering all the way if this was going to be a scam. I got there and the truck was there, exactly as advertised. While doing the paperwork I was given the ceramic sealer and door edge warranties. I was told it was standard practice there to do those but since I didn’t want it there was no charge. Not every Ford Dealer is a crook.

This makes sense because the dealer would want to do the ceramic coating as part of the cleaning up and readying for sale process. Otherwise, they'd need to rewash it before applying the coating but most importantly you don't want a "sold" car on your lot a minute longer than necessary. And if they use a real detailer level coating, it needs to be baked on. So you'd want it done before the car officially goes up for sale... But really with most dealerships, I'd assume hybrid spray on wax, would qualify as a "ceramic coating" job worth $500. PS, try to avoid getting your car detailed at the dealer, take it to a real detailer.

I got out of the automotive field many years ago because there are SO MANY crooks out there, us honest people really can't compete. I started out buying from private parties (from the classifieds). Made a friejnd who had a dealer's lic. who took me to a few auctions. I always had thought dealer and salvage auctions would be the goose that laid the golden egg...but I quickly saw that I was doing better buying privately. Can't compete with even honest guys all coming together to see who'' pay the highest price for a car (which is what an auction is)- much less with crooks who will outbid every honest guy.

That bidding process of fake bids is also in sports auctions; cards, memorabilia, autographed items. It's called Shill Bidding and people get accounts closed by Ebay. Pristine Auction has issues as well.. basically its the owner trying to run up the price.. there are auction laws against it depending on what province or state you are in.

As a former officer, we NEVER asked if a car had ANY kind of etching while completing stolen vehicle reports. Cars have VINs, what difference does etching make? The only thing useful was a tracking device, like LoJack, OnStar, etc.

I remember when I placed a custom order for am AMG Benz and waited five months for it to arrive. It comes in and I go in to pick it up and they hit me with this extra $2800 worth of "options" the dealer added like Nitrogen Filled Tires, Auto Butler, Window VIN etching etc. I said "yeah no... I am not paying for any of that" and they're like "Well we've already done some of it" I told them ok well you can keep the car then.... They magically got rid of those charges and I told them I would never do business with them again.
