You should do a video on Spring Starts- Seed vs Cuttings vs Mother Plant. Maybe go on to talk about pot sizes to ground/ bed planting. What the plants really like and what they don't like. Where to get seeds/plants or cuttings. Really list your power points. Your videos are very good, it just seems you circle back a lot unsure of what to say. You are an valuable resource!

Hi Leyna..... I enjoy growing , cultivating and selling my Coleus....and I fill my yard with huge planters I design....and I do this knowing full well that I can't possibly bring them All inside. I bring a few small pots in...a bunch of rootings and stock/collect an abundance of seeds which I sell as well. As We enter late September the nights dip as well like yours...perhaps a bit later as I'm by the ocean....but September thru January is my respite as its alot of work cultivating 500+ Coleus all season long by myself and work a full time job Lol... So By January I'm recharged and ready to go!!! Leyna THANK YOU for taking the time out to comment!!! If your ever in the Point Pleasant Beach/ Bayhead area next June-Late August. .I sell my Coleus each Thursday at the Bayhead Farmers market from 1-6pm. Thank you for following along here and I'm also active on Instagram!!

Wow I was always taught to have my rootings in clear jars. Ty for sharing
@Jimswholiestofcoleus5 жыл бұрын
I think they Root faster in clear glass.... not necessarily only clear glass but any translucent color vases or jars as I have. The Coleus that are in ceramic mugs usually take longer to root. So there is some truth to what you were taught.
@kathleenmurphy23795 жыл бұрын
The reason why they might do well in clear containers is because of the fact that the roots may be able to do a little photosynthesis or the stem has light shining on it and helps produce photosynthesis for the roots to grow and stimulate them. I found that too and for some reason that old ruby red glass when it's a ruby red vase it seems to stimulate the root growth more than other colored glass
@leynaabbey4 жыл бұрын
Some really finicky plants don't root well in clear glass containers. Roots like darkness.
@Jimswholiestofcoleus4 жыл бұрын
I have Rooted in Clear, Colorful tinted and regular painted bud vases. All with good results. Im guessing clear more likely to get mold from sunlight . But I change water often

That little tiny cutting of the pink one that you have do you find the those little pink plants are really super delicate and don't grow very well I had a couple that look just like that and they just sort of just sat there and didn't do much they didn't seem to have a lot of vigor like other coleus I grow from seed
@anthonylewis625 жыл бұрын
yes you must keep them in the sunny window in winter for sure, or under grow lights and my ones in water, i change the water every other day, faithfully, or they turn yucky, they need fresh water for sure

You should make a KZbin channel. If you have a cell phone it's very easy I have my own KZbin channel it's Kathleen Murphy and if you put the word coleus in my name and the search engine you'll find me and you could post the videos of your coleus on KZbin. I film with my cell phone so I don't edit it's like going live what-you-see-is-what-you-get. And you can pause while you're filming on your cell phone camera and then you just it it's so easy it's self-explanatory I'm sure you watch videos on KZbin cuz you're watching this one so there's a place where I think under Library where you can find out how to make your own videos it's so simple I'm 70 years old and I figured it out you should be able to

As far as placing your water cuttings in your house, does it matter if the coleus is a shade loving coleus, or it is an either/or sun/shade coleus... You can still put it in a direct sun light window? I'm trying to figure out where to put mine. This is the first time I've done cuttings...
@Jimswholiestofcoleus5 жыл бұрын
All Coleus can tolerate Shade and Sun....Some varieties can tolerate Sun more than others. There are those who say that Rootings should not be placed in full sun....and althiugh that may have some truth Winter Sun is not nearly as intense as Summer Sun ..I keep mine in front of or near a Bay window which gets some Direct Sun.....but not a sustained baking Sun for hours on end. So whether it's a Coleus that likes Shade or Sun they both REQUIRE BRIGHT DAYLIGHT..... The more daylight your Overwintering Coleus gets along with proper watering and protection from the chill of Windows .. the better chance it will make it. If you suspect your Coleus doesnt respond well to a sunny window then move it when the Sun is at it's most direct and intensity. I dont mean to make Overwintering Coleus seem complex....but The tricky part is getting it through the initial shock of being brought from outside lighting to inside....

When do you trim the young plants for the first time?
@Jimswholiestofcoleus5 жыл бұрын
Young plants dont need to be trimmed. Now some young Coleus may start to grow tall or leggy....that means they need more light. You may cut the tops then to promote lower growth until it's a full healthy Coleus....then you may regularly trim the tops to keep it low and full/ bushy.

How many rootings does it take, to reproduce one nice big plant?
@Jimswholiestofcoleus4 жыл бұрын
A single rooting can over the course of one Hot humid growing season turn into a large plant. If I am planting in a pot larger than 12" then I use up all that soil " Real Estate" and place 4-5 around the perimeter and even one at center. All things being equal weatherwise...A much quicker fuller plant. Also my main reason placing multiple Coleus in a planter is I mix the varieties which makes for a much more interesting arrangement!!

Hey jim , i love your content . im in the southern hemisphere australia so we are just going into spring here , i have several large coleus in pots that have survived outside over winter its pretty mild with only a few light frosts , But lots of strong wind . They have ended up leggy with sparse foliage . What would you suggest ? im thinking a good cut back and treatment with miracle grow liquid fertilizer. Thoughts? Thanks Matt
@Jimswholiestofcoleus5 жыл бұрын
Hey Junglematt How have you been!!! My best advice is be patient....let Spring arrive fully ! The Winds and Cool weather and borderline frost conditions will do more damage to Overwintered Coleus that are brought out too early. You can start to fertilize ABSOLUTELY as the daylight increases and temps rise. I had many Coleus damaged this past Spring by participating in an Earthday celebration event in April. The day was windy and cool and it really damaged the Coleus.

@@evaselena1236 I just go into nurseries and buy some of their plants repot them take them in the house for the winter and then take cuttings from them. Also you could grow them from seed but you should start them early like around when you start tomato plants but it's amazing how many gorgeous different kinds of coleus you can get from that package of seeds. I have an Instagram account and if you go to Kathleen McBride Murphy all one word you will find some pictures of coleus that grow from seeds that I thought were very unusual. And I have a KZbin channel and if you go to Kathleen Murphy and put the word coleus in the search engine with my name you'll find me and you can see how many colors you can just get it from 4 or 5 mother plants. I had so many coleus from the package of seeds and from cuttings that I didn't know what to do with all of them. And Jim has so many he sells them in the summer

How long can the cuttings stay in water?
@Jimswholiestofcoleus5 жыл бұрын
If you keep water clean...change it often....remove any debris most rootings will last for many months. Each rooting is different. But light and proper water care increases the chances of longevity.
@anthonylewis625 жыл бұрын
you can leave them in water for months if you choose too , just make sure as it gets bigger, to keep it in a sunny window spot in winter and change that water every other day, at least
