The ironic thing about BJJ, actually a lot of things in life, is it really is an individual journey surrounded by people helping each other.

Chewey I don't do jj, but I find your attitude and the way you express yourself inspirational anyway. I am currdntly training to run group exercise classes, just a couple hours a week. You are the kind of trainer I aim to be. Cheers mate.

@randomcommenterphd893 still haven't done JJ but I'm running my group exercise classes 3 times a week. I think if there was a school locally I'd give it a go, but honestly I might not have room for a new passtime!

I had the same problem. Went through white together. Got our blues around the same time. He is fitter than me and slightly better. He left Shanghai for Germany. It was weird going to training. My wife laughed at me and told me acting a love struck idiot. It took me awhile........ about a month to realise that I was actually being held back by my situation. After, I was training with other people, great judokas who made my stand up better, people who wrestled and had a different approach. I grew again after I lost my friend. I needed his help in the beginning, but I also needed other peoples help in order to get better. Not knowing who my training partner was going to be in each class added another level to my approach to my training.

Some guys at my gym record their rolls on their phones. Maybe he can do that and then do zoom meetings with his buddy to go over them and get the kind of feedback he finds constructive.

But what if his friend decides to quit BJJ one day (which is possible)? He may quit too if he's not really passionate about it. Ultimately, he's gotta make sure he's doing it for himself and not his friend.

Now he has to become the leader or be the inspiration for someone else...just like his friend was instrumental in keeping him in the game , he now has to give that to someone else . I think that would be very therapeutic as well.

I found this with my coach. He moved away at the beginning of the year and class is *not* the same without him teaching it. I'm working through the process of dealing with this but it's hard man. The spark, the desire, the drive...just isn't there yet and I don't know If it ever will be in the same fashion again. I still force myself to attend class regularly, but the thrill and fun are gone now.
@johnmcdonagh3742 жыл бұрын
Maybe this is just the lesson you needed to develop your own intrinsic self motivation. Until now your inner drive and passion were dependent on someone else. This was always going to happen as he was never really going to be your coach forever. Did you just feel passion before because he convinced you to do so? Do you actually love BJJ? Or were you just inspired by an individual?
@knky98bouba822 жыл бұрын
How long have you been training? Because this is what BJJ is man... not only dealing with the learning part but also the mental aspect. This is only the start man, it's a tiny obstacle u can easily overcome if your love of the sport is there.
@merkins872 жыл бұрын
It does happen mate & sometimes it may take a few different places before you find a place you vibe with. You may lose the initial spark/intensity, but just keep plugging along & you'll meet the right people again. It's not easy, but it's all worth it.

Hi I have a question I'm almost 40 and unfit and have knee problems I'm to old or weak to start this I also have social anxiety witch makes it even more difficult.
@kryptek8292 жыл бұрын
I started at 39 with bad knees and bad feet. Its doable you just have to push yourself through it. Started at 235lbs at 6 ft. I'm now holding at 200 my knees fell much better, they don't buckle on me anymore.
@Schwartzbruder12 жыл бұрын
Just push through it. Your body will adjust in a matter of months. Maintain a consistent training schedule and get plenty of rest. And drink water
@bmstylee2 жыл бұрын
Do it man. I started about 18 months ago. I was a 41 year old 6'2" 290 lb washed up p powerlifter looking for a new challenge. Definitely not the healthiest guy. 4 knee surgeries from sports. I'm now 235lbs and way healthier. Now I was uneasy when I started because everything was uncomfortable From strage movements to the pajamas we call a gi. It took time to get comfortable with people trying to choke you or bend your joints the wrong way. Definitely a trust curve for everyone. But I got over it and I'm glad I started. Maybe one day I won't suck at it and get to be something higher than a white belt.

Bottom line is this, do you love BJJ? If you do then that passion should be what motivates you to train. But if you love your friend more than BJJ, then you won't last. There are plenty of good guys to train with at many gyms so it shouldn't matter. No one should be put on a pedestal like this.

Sometimes white belts don't know you are going soft. They are happy because they are still in it. They don't know every time you are playing. But sometimes you must show them they are just meat.
